Will Hernandez made quite the impression on New York Giants right guard Kevin Zeitler during the team's first full-team OTAs practice of the 2019 offseason. Zeitler is a man of few words, but that was all he needed to describe his first impression of Hernandez. "Strong, very, very strong," Zeitler said, following the first full-team OTAs practice. "He’s a good young guard. Even watching today, I think he can be special." |
You mean getting to a SB will be a weekly highlight reel..😊
That would be unusual for a young Giants player, but here's hoping you're right.

Is wrong about Hernandez and I'm wrong about Beal.
His eval was correct and those short comings do exist physically but that frame and that weight leaning on you for 60 some odd plays is going to wear people down. His awareness will improve, his coordination will improve and his technique will improve and the little holes he has will shrink. He'll get out quicked from time to time but he's so damn wide and hard to get around it may moot more often than not.
Well obviously we all hope he improves. But bottom line, Sy would not have picked him there and I've been critical of the Beal pick.
Hernandez vs Lawrence - I'd pay to watch them go 1:1 (very glad they are both Giants)

For about 2 years I subscribed to Jerry Foley's The Giants' Insider and their draft analyst expert (don't recall his name) was all over Hernandez for the Giants' 2nd round pick last year. He liked Hernandez so much, he wanted the Gmen to trade back into late round 1 to snag him. His summary of Hernandez, IIRC, was that he was a dynamic run blocker who could move DTs off the LOS, and that he pulled and trapped well, but had correctable shortcomings as a pass blocker. His summation of WH in one sentence reminded me of Parcel's comment after drafting Jumbo Elliot: "0nce [this guy] he gets his hands on a defender, it's all over."
His power is excellent if not extreme: 37 BP reps with a sub 5.2 seconds 40, at 327# at 6'2" tall.
Physically, he's very much a match to Zeitler coming out if slightly heavier, stronger and squatter. Zeitler now looks a bit trimmer in the waist than WH. Hopefully Will follows KZ's and perhaps Solder's leads how to take care of himself long term, as well as the tricks of the trade pass blocking.
I was darn impressed what I saw from him last year.

He got away with a lot of stuff at little UTEP because he was a "man among boys" there (especially pass-pro). In the NFL, he found he can't do that ...
And THAT is what I love about him, he LEARNED and is anxious to get better. With guys like Zeitler around him, "sky's the limit".
I don't recall. But if he is, and he stated he wasn't high on Hernandez on this site, then he peddled different stories for different publications LOL.
Can't be wrong on a prospect if you play both sides of the coin...

I actually vaguely recall it was Sy;s opinions in that publication, but can't be sure. Maybe he changed his opinion between publishing there and here, but there they guy (Sy or not) was very, very high on Hernandez, I recall that perfectly.
Can you refresh my memory as to what Sy said about him

Grade: 75
Strong Points:
-A bull when he is moving downhill off the snap
-Excellent leverage and initial punch, almost always wins the contact battle
-Quick feet as a side shuffle pass blocker
Weak Points:
-Slow out of his stance as a lateral mover
-Struggles to maintain separation from defenders
-Gets top heavy, shows his numbers to the dirt, doesn’t keep his head up
Summary:
Fifth year senior. Hernandez will be ready for NFL right away when it comes to the power game. He won’t be pushed back by anyone and he will excel as a straight ahead run blocker. I get nervous with him elsewhere, however. If he is up against speed and quickness inside on passing downs, a growing trend, I can see him having a hard time. He doesn’t lock guys up and there are some adjustment issues. He can be a stud in the right scheme, but a major liability in the wrong scheme. He is not a one size fits all lineman.
NFL Comparison: Gabe Jackson / OAK
