but I love them and I share the sentiment that I could just listen to his characters interact for a couple hours. He's one of the few directors that I have full faith in making a movie I'd enjoy
Cant wait for this one and agree about the writing. The dialogue alone in his films is genius. The basement bar scene in Inglorious Bastards is one of my favorite all time scenes.
Its therefore inevitable that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will be judged in light of Tarantinos newfound independence. Disappointingly, the directors first post-Weinstein film is strikingly bland.
Although theres some enjoyment to be had in watching DiCaprio dress up in silly costumes and pretend hes a second-rate actor, the meta-humor is nowhere near as funny as Tarantino thinks it is. The shoot scenes drag on for far too long, and even his usually popping dialogue falls oddly flat this time around. The man who once wrote a riveting scene around what a Big Mac is called in France is here reduced to giving a character the sobriquet Pussycat just so he can have Cliff spin an obvious joke from the first half of her name.
When the story reaches its much-anticipated denouement, its finally revealed what all Tarantinos fuss over spoilers was about. Since only gimmicky films can be ruined with a spoiler, maybe Tarantino should have focused on giving the viewer more reason to see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood other than to find out what happens at the end.

and the reviews are greater than the sum of its parts
stylistically, but they aren't all gold for me. I loved the concept and the dialogue in Hateful 8, but there was something about that movie that I can't put my finger on that I didn't enjoy. Maybe the characters? I'm not sure.
But even when I don't love the movie, it's always great to watch them because of the interesting style of direction. You always know it's Tarantino and that's a good thing.

I'm a huge fan of his. One of the interesting things about him is, IMO, he's never made a bad movie. His worst movie/s are still pretty good. Not all of them are homeruns by any means, but he really gets a lot out of the actors he works with, he's redefined careers (Travolta, Madsen, Roth, Sam Jackson (always popular but some of his best work has been with QT), and countless others). Not many directors have that kind of resume.
so of course its ridiculous. Countless movies revolve around an unknown that's revealed in the 3rd act. That isn't a gimmick.
3D was a gimmick (most of the time), found footage was a gimmick, "it being a dream" was a gimmick, etc.
Think about knowing the end of the Godfather ahead of time. Still a good movie, but no where near as effective as it is upon a first, unspoiled viewing.
Didn't really care for the Kill Bills. Maybe it's because I was never into kung fu movies.
Inglourious Basterds.....I don't know, something about it rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe it's because WWII history is a passion of mine and seeing such a ludicrous alt-history take annoyed me.
Django had some terrific scenes and performances, but definitely felt like a "sum is less than the parts" movie.
The Hateful Eight, eh, just didn't really like it, and at this point a lot of his stylistic tendencies seem kind of rote to me.
Death Proof was actually my favorite thing he's done in the last 20 years.
I'll see this one eventually - maybe not in the theater, but at some point. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised, but as of now my three favorite Tarantino movies are still his first three.
i mull over my top 3 QT movies all the time and its impossible for me to decide on but Kill Bill 2 is likely in there (1 is close, better action but thought 2 was the better movie).
And talk about star power. Brad AND Leo? And, of course, one of BBI's favorites: Margot Robbie
But this plot seems to fit Tarantinos style to a T. That style/era, young Hollywood, plus Charles Manson? Its going to be nuts.

What a stupid stance to have.

The Empire Strikes Back was a "gimmicky" film. So was The Usual Suspects.

Wonder what sci-fi classics he'd pay homage to?
Difference, I've heard the joke, I know where it came from, and I know he's stealing it.
Just a thought.
Hows that Tiger prediction coming along? Havent gotten any feedback on that yet, weird...

But I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with Star Trek. That should be...different.

I don't know, but whatever he does I hope it's better than J.J. Trek.

Nope, actually thought it up. Care to share where I stole it from? Waiting.
Insofar as Tiger, my prediction stands: Jack 18 > Tiger 15
Not to be caught.
The Hateful Eight?
I could see that. I loved it but I could see it not being for everyone.
Django Unchained?
My wife won't watch it. Upsets her too much, she says. But it's a fantastic film, imo.
Inglourious Basterds? How in the world can someone not like that film?
That takes us back 10 years.
I admit I have to see Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair. I really liked the other 2 Kill Bills. Not at first. But they grew on me.

No, he'd never be the majors' champion. That was my headline prediction, everything else was secondary. Still has 4 to go.
HA!

Yup, those were the three. Just not my cup of tea, I guess.

As I've been saying since 2008

No more Majors, and now, no more wins.

Great effort from Tiger

perhaps his Major drought comes to an end in 2019?
Stan in LA : 8/12/2018 7:07 pm : link
Nope.

BTW, has Tiger won a Major since 2008?
Stan in LA : 4/1/2019 7:28 pm : link
Didn't think so. Who could have ever predicted that?
Oh, wait...
https://corner.bigblueinteractive.com/index.php?mode=2&thread=581225
Tiger will never pass Jack in the only thing he ever wanted:
The most Major wins.
HA!
Guess i cant blame him - its tough to get EVERY prediction wrong. Even a broken clock is right twice a day...
