Thought DG did right thing with Collins by not resigning him. As many have said, at $13 million not worth it, didn't want to tag, and hopefully will get third round compensatory in 2020 vs the third rounder from KC in this years draft.
Having said that, he left it all out on the field, played hurt and truly wanted to remain a Giant and help turn this around. I appreciate that and want more players with that attitude. Just too one dimensional for that price tag and coming off shoulder injury as well.
Calling out Apple at time publicly was welcome from my end. Maybe he was too vocal but I doubt that was an overriding reason DG didn't keep him. I and many others viewed him positively. But his price tag and skill set just did't match up. But appreciated his warrior attitude and physical style of play when we were so lacking in that department on the roster.
I guess I need to retire my Collins Jersey until AFTER He retires.
Yeah a bit, but the piling on is a bit much. The media definitely hates DG and will put a microphone in front of everyone who has a gripe with him. Its the way of the world. Find the target and take him down. This is really about DG.
He could definitely could come off better by saying less but he does lay it all out there.
By the end of this year all will be gone. I.E. Jenkins
Solid player, but Washington overpaid for him. Had one amazing year. His coverage skills were exposed after that.
We made the right call, when you factor all of the other variables (value needed for the OBJ trade, etc).
I think Peppers is an up and coming player. Has the tools to be better than Collins. And, he can return kicks really well. Rooting for the new #21...
We'll see.
But now, I do not want him to do well against us....ever.
The only critique should be that DG should have traded him before the deadline, but maybe he tried and couldn’t get back more than the 3rd rounder he eventually will get.
And maybe Collins’s attitude and the Giants feelings didn’t change until after the deadline.
p.s.--As for appreciation, I always thought he was overrated by BBI, even during his All Pro season. To my eyes, he was a plus player in 2016 and a JAG the two years that followed. I recognize that mine is an outlier opinion by a wide margin, so I'm probably wrong. JAGs don't get $84M deals even from stupid teams. But time will tell.
+ 1
He does come across as bitter about how DG treated him in recent comments, but i think the rush to label him as an overrated cancer is unfair. He played hard and played through injuries when he could.
Yes, his public comments were somewhat cringeworthy, but I think it's a leap to call him a cancer.
IMO it's possible to like the player, appreciate his time with the Giants, and also be happy our GM made the smart business decision to move on rather than break the bank to bring him back.
Sad part is Collins was one of the few hits Reese made. But he got paid like he was a perennial all pro. He wasn’t. He’s been injured and a bit up and down. And while the team needed leaders this guy needs to learn to stfu once in a while.
He can lie to himself that it wasn’t about money but it was. That Wash wanted to pay him top dollar should be a great thing. Focus on that. But all he’s been doing crying like a scorned ex girlfriend. God. What-a drama queen
Liked the move then, like it now.
a 3rd rounder this year is worth a 2nd next year. DG should have traded him.
Collins the Giant, I loved
Collins the Safety, I was over
Now Engram needs to torch him for 12/130/2
He is paid too well by Washington for my tastes. And he made a strategic mistake in letting it be known he would hold out if franchised. Yeah, he likely would have signed the tag and played before the season started ("After all, what choice did he have") but this team at this point did not need the distraction. I think he really shot himself in the foot by his approach to FA and the franchise; I think if he played it better, we would have re-signed him.
Even though I appreciated him as a player, and even if he was right (about Apple, etc). I think it does reflect poorly on him to air dirty laundry to the press, especially about, not just a teammate, but a fellow position partner. He should have known that it was inappropriate and he compounded that ignorance by continuing to air the laundry. Someone else here wrote that he suffered the same problem as Kyrie in thinking that they were a leader (and I believe that they both are/were) but not really knowing what a leader was or did or what it takes to become one.
Having said that, I actually don't begrudge him his latest comments. I'm sure that he is not seeking reporters out but is instead responding to questions. We've already seen that he doesn't possess self-discipline (wrt his mouth) or understand concepts of diplomatic speech. We know that reporters, especially ESPN, are *looking* for people to feed their DG-bashing mission and it's not difficult to understand that Collins is a pawn in their game. And, despite the cash, he likely is bitter that he either miscalculated his situation with the Giants or that they took the sensible business approach rather than the more emotional one.
I do think that in the end, this will be recognized as win-win (win?) in that he got paid beyond reasonable expectations (something that would not have happened in NY), we got a more flexible player (or at least one where we should see minimal drop-off in overall play (worse in some areas, better in others), and the Redskins will get someone that will ehlp them to win some games.

A great player doesn’t need a good coordinator to cover up his weakness ... and a defensive back who’s a liability in coverage ... no thanks
For me is he is the type of player that should have gotten the early extension like Shepard did. He probably would have been closer to 9mil/yr and looking like a bargin now.

Yeah, I don't agree with that at all. Brady is a great player. You don't see him running Cam Newton plays.
A coordinator puts his people in the best situation.
Thumbs up

On the franchise tag. So now he is a Redskin. Wish he could just move on but you can see it really bothers him..
Funny thing is, he said he would play on the franchise tag prior to not being tagged. After he was "not tagged" he later said he wasn't going to play on the franchise tag anyway. But when the option was first presented to him by reporters towards the end of 2018 his response was "what other choice do I have" (or words to that effect).

I do remember that comment from him.
Then his agent got involved.
Landon needs to understand the business decision that was made with him, his health, his level of play in certain areas.
While I understand some players like to use the victim card to motivate themselves, it is getting a little long winded and making him seem like a jilted lover who still stalks his prior love.
Collins doesn't qualify, OBJ with his old burst maybe.
About him being vocal, I only know what I hear. I think his public comment about Apple went too far.
He asked not to be tagged. He didn't want the Leveon Bell situation, neither did Getty.
He was allowed unrestricted free agency. He hit the Lottery. He should be happy and focused on Washington not the Giants.
His bitterness is misguided.
But some people don't seem to understand that on a good team there are going to some players overpaid and some underpaid.
You don't drop all the overpaid players at the end of the season, especially when you have no one to replace them.
