I like the Mix in the Secondary

mittenedman : 5/22/2019 10:26 am
There are a cluster of young guys coming in with big talent. The easy take is the secondary will struggle due to inexperience. But Gettleman did a really nice job supplementing these guys with the right kind of veterans.

He keeps Jenkins around as his #1 CB which is a good move. He was hurt last year but still has plenty of talent and has always been a pro's pro young guys look up to.

Bethea, according to Bettcher, is the best leader he's ever been around. Vocal, makes all the calls in the secondary. Gets everyone lined up.

Peppers, although young, is a guy other players look up to and is a great lockerroom guy and field presence.

And then...the hidden weapon. I may be in the minority here but I liked what I saw from Michael Thomas last year. Clearly better in coverage than Collins and I thought the secondary tightened up when LC went out with injury. He reminds me of Deon Grant. You can play him anywhere and he'll be a hard-nosed vocal leader who guys respect. He will allow Bettcher to use Peppers as a roaming Joker like he did at Michigan - and Mathieu at AZ.

With Jenkins/Bethea/Peppers/Thomas, they don't NEED all these rookies right away. Beal seems like he's ready to go and has a good lock on that outside CB spot but really as long as 1 of Beal, Baker, Ballentine or Love are good, they're OK. If all them turn out to be players right away - look out. With this mix of vets, they've afforded themselves an opportunity to work the young guys in slowly, situationally, not force-feed them, and lean on the veterans to control the learning curve.

If all goes well, the Giants will be gearing up for a Playoff run with a bunch of fresh-legged DBs just hitting their stride, and the vets falling into the backup roles.
Tightened up was not a phrase

that came to mind when Collins went out. Unable to tackle was. But I agree that the secondary could be tremendously improved this year and may even have some decent depth.
Betcher, Bethea, Beal, Ballentine, Baker

Killa beez on the swarm.
We think of it as a young group because of the draft cholices

But at the moment 4 of the top 5, Jenkins, Bethea, Peppers and Haley are vets. Only one of the starting spots will go to a rookie probably the better of Beal or Baker. Love could beat out Haley but if he's that good that's ok. It's not like we're handing out starting spots to unproven players because we have no one else.
Playoff run

is a little bit of irrational exuberance no?

I'm excited about the defense too but playoffs is a longshot
Remind me...because I forgot....Michael Thomas.....

Did he have problems with tackling or with certain angles he took? Don't get me wrong, I like Michael as a hard nosed football player, but if there are deficiencies in his game, I would love to seem them cleared up this off-season so he can take his game, as well as the Giants to the next level.

I am crazy excited about this secondary!!!
I'm really hoping

the Giants are this year's Colts, with a defense based on a bunch of guys no one expects to do anything special. I'm hopeful that Peppers is a big time playmaker, and that we get what is expected out of Lawrence in plugging up the middle, allowing Carter and Golden to get pressure from outside and Goodson and Ogletree making plays at the point of attack. It's just hard to project what the CB's will do because we don't really know how good any of them will be, or how long it will take for them to develop. I have a feeling this is going to be a defense this year that will be wildly inconsistent, with some games where they look like an up and coming elite defense, and others where they get torched.
In his best year, Collins was a playmaker. Unfortunately, that didnt

last.
I like killer bees, Coach B. Too bad it wasn’t your idea.
I like the philosophy ...

Let the kids play, rely on the old vets to save them if something goes wrong.

Too many teams play the vets till the wheels fall off, then are forced to play the young reserves, who are not ready.
All true

Now if only we had a pass rush....
I think there was a guy available at number 6.🤔
Free Safety depth seems weak

Love will fill the DRC roll as army switch knife and Baker will take the outside over Beal. Beal will be nice depth and rotation though so QBs won't have any weak corners to take advantage of
