On the heels of the Broxton trade the Mets also announce:

Mets are changing their tune on basically everything.

-Dom Smith will receive OF reps

-J.D. Davis is also an outfielder

-Edwin Diaz will be used for multi-inning saves

-Tomas Nido is essentially deGrom's personal catcher

The team was on the record against all this in April.
4:15 PM - 22 May 2019

Lineup (who had this lineup predicted 6 weeks ago?):
No Conforto, no McNeil, no Nimmo and Alonso, Frazier and Davis all in the lineup (with Gomez and Lagares):

Rosario SS
Davis LF
Can 2B
Alonso 1B
Frazier 3B
Gmez - RF
Lagares - CF
Nido - C
deGrom RHP

Nats:
Trea Turner - SS
Adam Eaton - RF
Anthony Rendon - 3B
Juan Soto - LF
Matt Adams - 1B
Kurt Suzuki - C
Brian Dozier - 2B
Victor Robles - CF
Max Scherzer - RHP

because I think just in the last few days I read a Mick quote saying there will be no personal catchers (in spite of a ridic ERA split, something like 0.5 w/ Nido but 6+ w/ Ramos...tho I don't know the exact # of games for each). That too after Mesoraco last year

But I guess we know we cant count on what MC says as much

McNeil *might* still be dealing w/ the ab issue, he's fallen off a little since then. But yeah otherwise wtf
that's pretty funny but all seem like the right decisions

like a moron when he comes out and makes definitive statements on things that are shortly reversed. Makes it hard to take him seriously and I wonder if it has an effect on his credibility with the players.
A big part of Mick's problem
Vanzetti : 5/22/2019 5:14 pm : link
Is he lets the media catch him off guard and make statements that he has not really thought out.

Out here in sunny CA, I listen to Bochy and he talks for 20 minutes and says nothing. "Well, we have to see." "We have options. Options are good." "A lot of hungry guys on this team." "We have competitive guys." "We have guys who want to play."

Media never gets anything from Bochy. In contrast, Mickey self-generates a lot of the "controversy" that surrounds the team. I feel for him at times because he is so in over his head.

AND while it's commendable to get INTL pool money for Broxton, it's not that commendable when they traded 3 players for Broxton less than two months ago.

Good they got something for him
Bad they gave up something for him 2 short months ago

And as Shecky highlights, meaningless if they don't use it.

DeGrom should pull a Thor. Throw a shutout and hit one out.
I forgot we had Rajai but he's still fast and will honestly probably

be better than Broxton. Not saying much but I think he's still probably our best defense OF option other than Lagares in CF with all the injuries right now. Hopefully he can hit over .200.
Jeff McNeil

2-7 (.286) with a 2B, a BB, and a HBP career vs Scherzer, comes out to a .444 OBP and a .873 OPS. I know, too small of a sample, but that's a pretty good track record so far against one of the best pitchers in baseball, and of course he's on the bench tonight.

Yes, hopefully Cano goes on the IL so we can see McNeil at 2B every day. Get Conforto back and maybe for one game, if Nimmo gets back, we can actually see the Mets best lineup.

Rob Gsellman has found himself over the last month. Since April 27, hes thrown 12 innings, allowing just 5 hits. He has walked 5 but he has 12 K. With Lugo out, hes their best reliever at this point if you ask me. He has earned a look for the 8th inning. #Mets

BVW deserves a lot of credit for hitting depth & quick adjustments
Eric on Li : 5/22/2019 10:32 pm : link
JD Davis looks like a great pickup - if he can settle into the LF rotation that will be a big boost bc his glove is tough to play at 3B.

Hechavaria, Gomez, and Davis are the types of guys you should always aim to have in AAA. Pros who can play defense and have been around long enough that in limited action they can be effective. Like Kelly Johnson and Uribe in 2015.

Broxton wasn't working and he was complaining - took some balls to cut bait that quickly and as a result Davis/Gomez have both made some things happen and seem to be happy just to be here. Never underestimate the value of showing there's accountability for results.

The BP is rounding into form but would still like to see BVW embrace the mantra that "you can never have enough pitching". After the draft pick compensation goes away it would be great if they could put the (hopefully) increased Cespedes savings into Kimbrel or Keuchel.
McNeil-Nimmo-Conforto
ZGiants98 : 5/22/2019 10:51 pm : link
Is the starting OF. Yeah they are all hurt but all are nursing small injuries and should be back soon. Sure its nice if Davis could get a start in the OF from time to time but he has no long term role there IMO. The place for him to play is 3B. His only challengers are Lowrie and Frazier. Frazier should be released when guys start returning and Lowrie, as good as he's been the last coupe of seasons, is 35 and you cant bench a wRC+ 130 bat for a 35 year old.

Im also not buying his -9 DRS at 3B. UZR severely disagrees with it coming in at a much more acceptable -2.5. Eventually these numbers should converge and stabilize over a bigger sample and we'll have abetter idea but right now the gap is a mile wide.
McNeil should start at 3B and Davis in LF
Eric on Li : 5/22/2019 10:55 pm : link
Lowrie needs to earn his playing time coming back, and that means playing better than Davis before getting penciled in as an every day starter over him. And if he plays as well as Davis is playing and Cano still sucks then you need make Cano earn his time.
Maybe next year but for now they've shown
ZGiants98 : 5/22/2019 11:04 pm : link
no real desire to play McNeil at 3B and he's also been very good in LF defensively. Sticking with DRS for now, McNeil is +2 at 3B AND +2 in LF. Basically, he's equally solid at either position. Where as Davis... his most comfortable position is 3B and he came up as a 3B. Last year he was an absolute train wreck in the OF. I know right now DRS hasn't been kind to him at 3B either, but I dont think he's looked that bad there save for the one real disaster game in the first week of April.

Also, I still dont think Davis has officially become a everyday player so that's another reason to keep McNeil in LF. If Davis is going to split games with Lowrie and Frazier... both of those guys will only play 3B so it makes sense to keep everyone at 3B. McNeil is 100% an everyday player so you might as well play him everyday in the OF in the position that opens.

That said, of course things will change up from time to time.
I wonder who goes in the OF
ZGiants98 : 5/22/2019 11:23 pm : link
When Conforto is activated. Im guessing it's between Gomez and Rajai and neither can be sent back down now. Gomez has been wretched.

Switching gears, Keith Law posted his big board for draft
Eric on Li : 5/23/2019 10:08 am : link
There are a bunch of SP in our range who sound interesting. Have to go BPA but in a perfect world BPA will line up with a SP or an OF.

Here are his top SP:

Quote:
9. Alek Manoah, RHP, West Virginia -- Manoah has turned everything up a notch in the last two months of his season. I couldn't have seen him any better, as he was still hitting 95 mph in the ninth inning in a 125-pitch shutout of Texas Tech (and yes, the Mountaineers have consistently pushed Manoah a batter or two farther than they should), showing a four-pitch mix with both changeup and slider working as swing-and-miss offerings. He's physically ready at 6 foot 6, 260 pounds, and other than his habit of pitching exclusively from the stretch, there isn't a concern about his delivery. I think he's the best bet in a terribly weak college pitching crop to become a league-average starter.

10. Nick Lodolo, LHP, TCU -- Lodolo is the top lefty in the draft and will probably be the first pitcher drafted this year, as he's been up to the mid-90s with a huge slider that misses left- and right-handed hitters' bats, with better results across the board this year, including a big cut in his walk rate. He comes from a slightly lower slot than most starters and the slider is often out of the zone, reminiscent of Andrew Miller in college, so there are some very modest concerns about him staying a starter in the long run, but he has at least mid-rotation upside.

11. Matthew Allan, RHP, Seminole HS (Sanford, Florida) -- Allan is the top prep pitcher in the class thanks to a curveball that is plus right now along with a solid-average fastball that's regularly 92-95 mph but that plays a little below that due to lack of life.

14. JJ Goss, RHP, Cypress Ranch HS (Houston) -- Goss probably will be chosen in the 20s, but on merit belongs a bit higher, as the 6-foot-3 right-hander is 91-95 with an above-average slider, improved feel for a changeup and an aggressive approach.

15. Jackson Rutledge, RHP, San Jacinto (Texas) JC -- Rutledge was at the University of Arkansas last spring but transferred to two-year San Jacinto, putting him into this year's draft class, a smart move as he's been regularly up to 98 with an upper-80s cutter, and getting some deception from a short arm stroke despite a 6-foot-8 frame.

I'd be lying if I said I'd ever heard of anyone in the draft before this article so curious if DMM or Mike have any preferences at this stage.

Goss and Rutledge intrigue me. Goss has a more solid college commitment of the two, but I think the prospect (no pun intended) of being a Top 12 pick versus going who knows where as teams in the 20's tend to reach for a more signable player if they lack comp picks because of budget issues might entice him to sign for slot or maybe slightly below. Having the 4.99% overage to split among future picks is useful.
I don't care who the Mets

I just hope they don't trade him within 6 months for a 36 year old 20M+ per year PED user with a ton of money left on his contract. or a closer.
