NFL Combine shifted to prime time

Starting in 2020, the televised drill portion of the combine will shift from the morning and afternoon to the afternoon and prime-time slots on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Battista reported.

"We are always looking at ways of bringing more football to a wider audience," the league said in a statement to NFL Network. "This will enable us to accomplish the goal of reaching more fans while still fully maintaining the football integrity of the event. We will adjust the schedule to ensure a positive experience for the players and clubs."

Should be interesting how this effects the scoring.

Peak optimal performance for explosive actions usually occurs around 4 pm for most people.
Why am I not surprised?

Eric....I think they are just making it more accessible
Zeke's Alibi : 5/22/2019 5:32 pm : link
to more people. Honestly, one of the few moves they've made lately that make any sense. No point of watching the combine on replay when you get home when you know all the results.

They'll make it into a spectacle, just like they've done with the draft.

Looking forward to celebrity 40's and other such time-consuming nonsense.

I don't know... maybe it might best to think of what is best for the actual prospects? Sitting around all day in a hotel room waiting to run your 40 time in the evening doesn't seem ideal to me.

Think of the red carpet possibilities. Then we can judge their fashion sense LIVE in PRIME TIME! After all, we need to know how these guys dress, right?

$$. You know that’s what it is all about. We now have ads imbedded in threads on your site. Why? $$. Not condemning, just pointing out that it’s always about $$.

Do they use "B-rate pop rock" bands for the Super Bowl halftime show? Of course not. So why would they use them for the Combine? They've got a whole week. I say turn it into an art and music festival, too.

Combinarroo.

Combinella.

Whatever works.
How about this?
smshmth8690 : 5/22/2019 8:02 pm : link
Next year, on the Thursday before the combine begins, the NFL names 4 'Superstar' players as captains. Each captain draws a number to determine draft order, then they choose sides. Each skill in the combine is then granted a scoring range, and the college draft hopefuls now can all play for something. Just think of the advertising opportunities you can market when 'Team Baker Mayfield' takes on 'Team Kyler Murray'.

I know I won't watch.

I'm already pumped to hear Stephen A. Smith's pre-Combine analysis about which QB's personality will have a greater effect on the performance of the prospects.

It is not that compelling. It is kinda boring imo. Unless you are checking out guys who play a position that your team is weak at ... and even still how many guys can you watch run the 40 or jump from a still position and knock sticks forward?

Again, what's more important here? For team's to get accurate evaluations on athletes or making sure maybe 50,000 more viewers get a chance to see someone run a 40-yard dash?

You are going to have people sit around all day waiting for evening athletic testing? It's stupid.

You want to make much more money? Get your ratings up. The reasons why their ratings have dropped have been widely discussed. Address those issues. Then the money will flow in.

Moving the Combine to Prime Time isn't going to stop the bleeding.
Moving athletic testing to the afternoon/early evening is much better
Zeke's Alibi : 5/22/2019 11:21 pm : link
for these guys. Now if they are running 40's at 9 pm at night thats stupid but it doesn't sound like that. Much better to get moving around the day first, before doing explosive training but that will be lost on some apparently. There are a lot of studies done on this as far as performance and injury prevention are concerned.
There is really no reason not to do this, honestly.

dramatically change the dynamic.

I don't think most fans understand how dull the Combine really is. But it is efficient and organized.

Now, they are going to try and make a dog and pony show out of it.

I can't imagine that the evaluators and football guys want the Combine to be live in the evenings. That's when the real dealings and discussions happen - but they aren't happening on the turf. They are happening in hotel bars. St. Elmo's, Harry and Izzy's or O'Reilly's.

This is one change that will likely excite few, including die-hard fans.

That was my wife's first reaction... "I'm sure the scouts will be thrilled with this!"

He knew absolutely nothing about football, so it was rarely if ever a topic for discussion when we got together. One time, though, shortly before he died, I took him shopping, and then out to lunch. He asked me what I had planned for the weekend. I told him I was just going to hang out at home and watch the Combine. He asked me what that was, so I explained it to him.

He listened to my explanation, thought for a moment, then said, "It sounds like a slave market."

has never tried having any kind of athletic feat at night before-- I hope these athletes can figure out how to perform during those hours.

I can't believe the things people will complain about. If the combine were held at night all of these years and then decided to make it during the day, the same people complaining now that the switch is bad would also be the ones complaining that the switch is bad.

It's the combine. Who cares? Now, more people who want to watch have access.

It's what comes with going PRIMETIME...

Just like the NFL Draft, the NFL Combine is an event that has grown to become what it is because the diehards and purists watch it... Now with going primetime, get ready for all the fun that comes with making it mainstream.

How about bands playing so loud that you can't hear the analysts talk about the prospects?

How about selling tickets so the fans can sit in the stadium? Probably not just Indy anymore when you can take this circus on the road, baby!

How about the vertical jump... sponsored by... DISNEY!!! With Mickey Mouse and Goofey taking the measurements? Zippity-dee doo-da! Or we could have an orangutan do it? You know... just for yuks!

Might take a few years, but it will get there... Just like the NFL Draft has... The last few drafts have had all of the above and sadly it has finally become UNWATCHABLE...

If that makes me a curmudgeon, well then BAH FN HUMBUG

I doubt this finds much

is much like Charlotte. A small "big" city. So when an event descends upon it, there's only a limited number of places to go:

I honestly don't know the answer to that. I can't recall ever seeing Gettleman out at night. I used to stay at the Westin and Marriott a lot and their bars were packed with NFL guys. And it was all the scouts, coaches, GM's - not the players. I wouldn't often see Giants guys out. Once was in a circle of people around Coughlin - but that was on the stadium field and it was interesting as hell to hear the banter.

I really don't know much about Dorsey either. Marty Hurney from the Panthers and Steve Keim from the Cards are never out past 11 without being hammered. Chris Ballard - who is now the GM for the Colts, but used to be lead scout with the Chiefs is another hard partier. Must've done some shots with Irsay for his interview!!

The coaches are a mixed bag, but I can't always tell some of the position coaches or assistants, so you just never really know who is hanging around that has ties. About midnight, that's when you need to perk ears up. Lips get loose, and the inner kid in people starts coming out. It's been years since hanging out with Jon Gruden - he was with Tampa at the time - but that guy will pull practical jokes on anyone!!

By far the best night at the Combine was when a piss drunk, blithering Sean Salisbury came up to our group and started in on Mickey Loomis from the Saints. Micky took his abuse for about 15 minutes and then just laid into him about being a serial drunk and how he couldn't even hold down a job at ESPN where he probably was only the 25th best drinker. Said he'd probably have been on the sauce for life if he was such a shitty QB. He's delivering these comments like he's Rodney Dangerfield and Salisbury is just standing there cross-eyed with his body bobbing back and forth trying not to collapse. He finally turns tail and the next hour is spent with the guys telling drunk Salisbury tales.
Lol well Steve Keim is no surprise and neither is the Colts GM.
