Anyone ever use the Bose Tonematch T1? I'm going to try and start playing some live at open mics, coffee shops, etc and it seems like a great little processor. But can it only be played through the Bose L1 system?
I have never used one, but I have a bunch of preamps and mixers

for playing various gigs, and based on reading the manual for the unit you're looking at, I think it can only be used with that other Bose gear. Definitely needs to hook up to L1 or T1 power source to power it up, and while I think you may be able to run output to other units, not optimally because the main output is that proprietary Bose output, not something standard like an XLR.

This is probably great gear but you will have to go all in on Bose to make it work. Not my cup of tea as I like more versatile equipment that can mix and match.
Any recommendations

for an affordable unit for a novice?
What's your plan, playing acoustic guitar and singing?

And do you expect to go into a house PA or will you be amplifying yourself?

Google "Fishman loudbox" and take a look at those - there are several sizes and they are extremely versatile, certainly good for a coffee house gig. You can use them standalone or run an XLR out into the PA.

If you have the coin, there are a number of great preamps for acoustic guitars that will give you even more sonic options for the guitar. But you need some kind of amp to go with them unless you're going straight into the house PA.
I agree with what Del said

So easy to just use a good little acoustic amp, especially with an XLR out.

I could be mistaken but AFAIK T1 has to be used with the L1, my pop and I use the Bose L1, B1 with the T1 mixer. This setup was stupid expensive.

But holy shiite, it sounds really, REALLY good. And so easy to pack and setup. Acoustic guitars (and vocals) sound incredible through it. It is great for small gigs even with a bass and drums.

Yup, not knocking Bose gear - it's great-sounding gear. I don't own it but I've played gigs through it. I'm just thinking about what's priced right and also flexible if the OP is a novice as he says. One of his options is open mics and you're not going to bring a Bose setup with you for that. You want something smaller that can adapt to whatever the house has, connection-wise.

Yep I agreed with you. Small amp like a Fishman is the way to go in my mind. And so many good amps out there now. Especially with an XLR out to put it though a sound system if they have it.

Hey Del check it out... I bought a Boss Katana 100 1x12. $300 bucks. Solid state / Digital combo amp. Has 55 Boss pedals built into it. I think it may be my favorite amp I have ever owned (and I have owned many). It KILLS with my electrics but it also has an acoustic setting, and my acoustics sound great through it for gigging/practicing/noodling.

I love this amp, I actually think it may be my favorite piece of gear I have ever bought. What a killer little amp.

I use it all the time for classical guitar. I like to face the speaker away from the audience though. I just hate being hit directly with sound coming out of a speaker.
Great info guys

thanks! Yeah I played a Tonematch at Guitar Center yesterday and was blown away by how good it sounded. I love how it has the effects built in as well. But for my level of no-good-ness, it's impossible to justify paying over $1500 for a setup.

I will look into Fishman.

Looks real nice, although I'd like it better if it had an XLR out as well as the 1/4 inch unbalanced line. Boss is doing some good things. If the OP is looking at an acoustic guitar preamp rather than an amp like the Fishman Loudbox, or has the coin to do both, the Boss AD-10 looks very nice (although I haven't tried it myself).
