For those who don't know, the moneybacker position is specific to Bettcher's scheme. The origin of this position was in Arizona when Bettcher was the defensive coordinator for the Cardinals and he created a unique role for former collegiate safety Deone Bucannon. This role requires a defensive player with the versatility to attack downhill on the line of scrimmage as a blitzer or to disrupt the run game. It also requires a player with the ability to match up in one-on-one coverage or into space (zone). It also requires a player with the skill set to fill in the run game or at the very least not be a liability against the run.
Jones is a physical and explosive prospect who would also be converting from safety to play this role. From the standpoints of size, length, speed, and explosion, Jones is an excellent fit for this unique role. Jones also has experience impacting the game in all three of the ways listed above required to fill this role in Bettcher's scheme.

He is a great fit for any defense, not just Bettcher's. Which begs the question, why did the Packers make adding two new safeties a priority this offseason? Surely they had other positions to address with a first round pick after adding Amos for big money. So let's put his scouting report coming out of college in the rearview mirror.
Josh Jones is tackling machine. He can cover as well as any safety and better than some corners in this draft. He has excellent speed and with his long length has the ability to trail and still make plays on the receiver. He can cover those big tight ends and big slot receivers and because he is strong, will tackle them quickly allowing very little run after the catch yardage. You can use Josh in any style defense… zone or in coverage, up close to the line or in a two deep defense or even as a single free safety because of his 6’1” 220 Lbs. 4.4 speed and because he is quick to support the run, tackle and because his instincts are excellent. Josh has the hands to intercept the ball and the strong running skills to bring it back for six.
You wouldn't think that the Packers would be moving on from their former 2nd round pick after just two years if he had lived up to his scouting reports.
Instead of working hard in the offseason and competing to win significant playing time by showing the necessary development in his game to make a significant impact on the field, he has chosen to take the easy way out by trying to make a powerplay in hopes he will be traded.
Quite frankly, Josh Jones is not a proven player who is good enough to be demanding anything from the organization that drafted him.
Jones is yet another cautionary tale of what happens when you put too high a value on physical tools and not enough value on a high football IQ. He is another player who wowed people with his physical abilities but could not adapt to the systems that he was being asked to perform in...

Yikes. Sounds like DG isn't going to be fishing here.
Schneier doesn’t explain the cap aspect of a trade very well. Â
Jones is under team control with a salary cap hit of just $1.15 million in 2019 and $1.34 million in 2020. Jones is still just 24 years old.
Those are Green Bay’s cap hits for Jones in 2019 and 2020. The corresponding figures for an acquirer would be $850K and $1.042M (i.e. just the salary).
why Deone Buchanon didn't sign with us if this moneybacker position is so great. Still confused by that. He goes to Tampa where they have Lavonte David and were talking of drafting Devin White (and did)
is on top of this before it becomes a pipe dream for some here. In fact, DG will ALWAYS be one step (or more) ahead of BBI, whether he acts on things or not.

He also played under Arians/Bowles (currently in TB)
Jones are littered all over the place as ex-NFL players.
With the atmosphere we've had here over the past few years, we really shouldn't overestimate guys who have physical ability but can't put the work in to grasp the game. How long were people waiting for Damontre Moore to "get it", and when he didn't, we still had people bitching that he was let go.

Jones actually seems to be slightly bigger/faster ... would be very interesting.

- "Moneybacker", a unique role, would likely maximize his undeniable physical ability.
Hard hitter with 4.4 speed, sign me up if the price is right
LOL!

Who knows, I'm gonna go ahead and trust the coach and GM on this one.
