i'm a young(ish) buck that loves jazz, i get all my knowledge from WBGO 88.3 -- please just give me anything else, I moved to jersey city and i don't get to listen to the car radio anymore
I bought one and started taking lessons about a month ago and I love it. I'm coming in late to the game (in my 40's), but I've been introduced to legendary players like Coltrane, and I'm so happy for it.
I'd like to give Clarence Clemons an honorary mention as well.

If you live in Jersey City you can take a quick jump on the PATH to West Village and see the best of the best do it live. My favorite club is Smalls @ 183 w 10th St.
Blue Note and Vanguard seem to attract bigger names (along with more tourists)but there's always someone great but usually a little less known - don't forget about 55 Bar either.

You can watch free live streams of the concerts at Smalls and Mezzrow every night. Just need to register.

What instrument do you play? I have been playing jazz guitar for about 40 years and I play in a quartet.

Wow was unaware. Thanks for the tip - I moved to DC a year ago and it’s been tough missing the live jazz and live comedy the city has.

Look around. DC isn't NY, but it still has a very good jazz scene. Blues Alley and Twins are great clubs. Baltimore probably has some good stuff too. I am on an email lost called "DC jazz" or something like that. It's not NY, but it is still probably top 5 or 6 in the country for live jazz.
not because they are all great .... it is more like my ear is not sophisticated enough (when it comes to Jazz) to decipher what his best performances are.
I recently did purchase the newly re-mastered (at the time) of his 4 nights at the Village Vanguard in November 1961.

Really sounds great to me ....

That link does not point to performances or cuts from the album. It is a review and rating by the website "Allmusic".
Getting back to Jazz - (if recorded properly) live albums always sound better to me than studio albums (except "Kind of Blue" ... : ) ). So, ... I am a little biased.
My Favorite Things
But really anything. Absolute genius. Someday I will drink a heavenly beer with Trane, Beethoven, and Hendrix.

Assuming Ludwig plays keyboards, who plays bass and drums?

Jaco
Drums is a tough one. I'll go with Mr. Goriila arms, Billy Cobham. But I could easily pick 5-6 others. Some of the new guys blow my mind.
