NFT: This (thread) is (about) Spinal Tap.

So many great things about the film that's 35 years old now.

The video I linked is a 22-minute interview by Harry Smith with the geniuses behind the classic.

Everyone seems to have a favorite Beetle. Who's your favorite member of Spinal Tap?

Michael McKean (as David St. Hubbins)?
Christopher Guest (as Nigel Tufnel)?
Harry Shearer (as Derek Smalls)?

Some truly great tidbits - some I'd heard, some not - in this interview (which includes Rob Reiner), including their favorite moments, what made them laugh while making it, the struggle they had trying to sell it to studios ("Maybe you should wink? In the first 30 seconds of the film?" Shearer says, "No, I don't think we'll do that."

Also, that the film was pretty much ALL improvised after they'd made a 20-minute version (that nobody seemed to get ... at all).

And one subtle thing that McKean references as one of his favorite things about the entire project: That someone (he can't remember who did it), at some point, put an umlaut over the N in Spinal.

Happy Friday, all.
May 1 interview. - ( New Window )

Me too. Named after the Patron Saint of Quality Footwear.

Here lies David St. Hubbins. And why not?
Puts it in perspective doesn't it?
Britt in VA : 5/24/2019 10:55 am : link
A little too much f-cking perspective.
"Well, I don't really think that the end can be assessed
Gap92 : 5/24/2019 10:57 am : link
as of itself as being the end because what does the end feel like? It's like saying when you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, you say, if the universe is indeed infinite, then how - what does that mean? How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what's stopping it, and what's behind what's stopping it? So, what's the end, you know, is my question to you."

I've got NO timing...You know what I want you to do? Will you do something for me? Do me a favor, just kick my ass, OK? Kick this ass for a man! That's all, kick my ass! Enjoy! Come on! I'm not asking, I'm telling with this! Kick my ass!!!

is a movie that came out in the mid 1990's that was based on the movie Spinal Tap, but it is with a black rap group.
Like they mention in the interview,
Beezer : 5/24/2019 11:51 am : link
that film pretty much was the first of a genre.

as the bass player in my high school band when I was first introduced to this movie, I always favored Derek Smalls.
Second City Studio, Elmwood Park, NJ, Summer, 86'...

...rehearsal studio had 2 rooms on the main floor, one in the basement, and Studio 'Y' upstairs. Seriously out of code fire hazard, they'd pull the attic trapdoor and the band would amble up the stairs, cases in hand. Room was a serious hotbox, did have an A/C. Amps embedded in the walls, loud as fuck up there and TIGHT.

This particular hot summer night, me and my jam buddies dragged an extra bass amp up there and 3 basses.

You know what came next.

:)

Is the best.

“Look, this one’s never been played, still got the ol’ tagger on it.”

““This one here?”

“Well don’t touch it...”

“I wasn’t going to touch it, I was just pointing...”

“Well don’t even point at it. It can’t be played! It can never be played! Right, I think you’ve seen enough of that one.”

“Well then if you fold it and you keep folding you get this. And I don’t want this, I want larger bread. I mean would you eat that? No. A that’s exhibit A. Then you come over here and there’s a little guy in here. But who’s in this one? No one, there’s nobody home! It’s a complete catastrophe!”
Nigel, that's beautiful, what it called?
