not the starter I want (Keuchel), but hopefully he's just a couple weeks away.

So to summarize: the Mets added Matt Kemp and Ervin Santana today on minor league contracts and added Aaron Altherr to the major league roster.
Would be so Mets to only now have a contingency plan for Cespedes; given his track record of slow returns from being injured, there was very little reason to think that he would return anytime soon from his last injury (and that was before ankle fractures debacle).
It will also be so Mets like to pass on dallas keuchel when the fear of losing a draft pick passes in a few weeks, and send out a press release saying something to the effect of "we feel comfortable with the starters we have, plus we have Santana able to step in if needed".
It's not like Syracuse had a tons of players pushing to get major league AB's.
I think Tebow is still starting in the OF there.
And I doubt the Mets are comfortable with their starting group even with Santana as minors depth.
If they don't sign Keuchel it will be because either a) someone does before the draft or b) someone outbids the Mets - IMO

I don't see the Mets bidding at all. They'll maybe spew some nonsense about "reaching out to his agent", but they are too cheap to get in on him.
Prove me wrong.
(obv just messing :-P)
Prove me wrong.
When you are just not that good, but you compete it sort of fits most people's definition of gritty or gutsy.
if they hold on and win.

LOL...reverse psychology.

Stiff neck means the disc is inflamed. Probably do down in ten days with cortisone. But will probably also be nagging all year

Thats fine. Its hard to complement a team as gritty or gutsy when they are under .500 and are very inconsistent against worse teams. Sure, they CAN have gritty or gutsy wins but I wouldnt exactly characterize them as that.
The prove me wrong comment was for the team, not for other posters to prove me wrong lol.

I know, they're trying to, but "Thor" keeps working against them.
Expected. A guy who was hitting like .030 or something. Even funnier given they just told us Brox hit one 475 in his 1st AB w/ Baltimore

Mediocre
As exciting as the Ws were had they even gone 16-0 over this stretch, the telling part of the season came after it. Ironic the 4 Nats Ws made them 4-6 over the last 10 against awful teams
If just JDG & Thor hadn't fallen off early season, things would look different. But it's tough to get behind this team as a contender now, esp in the NLe. The only hope is the old 'it's a long season' and no one has taken a big the lead (tho Phi & Atl are moving up)
No. Brodie agrees with you. The two of you against the world

I think its Matt Harvey syndrome. We all saw it early but were in love w his golden mane. The NY media eats these egotisictial divas alive. Shame New York organizations dont study his and find ways to prevent these players from marketing themselves so poorly.

Especially when they have a case study for success right in their clubhouse with DeGrom. But hey, the NYC nightlife just too alluring for immature millionaires.
posted yesterday (in this thread), thanks though for anyone who didn't see it.

So true! For once the Mets kept the right guy. A reason I cant believe they let Murphy walk...for such a low risk salary too. Thst was my final breaking point w Mets btw. Letting a guy leave who could handle NY met media so well for what really was a rather fair contract.
Also when they let olerud walk. To me Zeile was Neil Walker before Neil Walker.

Was seeing Ramos go 12 pitches before hitting a single. If he can just get going, he has a history of going on HR streaks

Seriously. The Buffalo now has 3 HRs in his last 4 ABs, as well as 4/4. 9/14 of late

That was a great call, Rory. Hopefully they can hang on here.
Diaz finally used for a 4-out attempt and blows his first save of 2019 on the first batter
Then you have Font, Zamora & Santiago go for 0 ER over the next 5 innings from the 9th on
Still nuts they really struggle vs the worst teams but they've been entertaining games and a W is a W
I don't care of PhiPsi (who I have no issues with) likes the "gutsy" label or not, but when you get outhit 14 - 7 (many of the Mets hits in xtras) and Tomas Nido hits a walk off HR to win it, that is a team winning games they could easily lose.
I call it gutsy.
especially a Jason Vargas start.

I agree. This lineup is kind of reminiscent of Mayberry, Campbell, et al. But theyre finding ways to win, which is great to see. And a different guy each day. Staying afloat.
Catchers Day at Citi Field today.

Like I said last night, teams can have gutsy or gritty wins. All of them do. Im just not going to call the Mets a gutsy or gritty team. They are under .500 and have a difficult time beating teams worse than they are. You can call this a gutsy win. Id call it a fight to be the tallest midget. I love watching my team win but I have a hard time getting excited watching the Mets struggle to beat worse teams...if they even defeat them at all.
The Yankees have fielded a team of backups through much of this season and are still plowing through the field. Thats a gritty and gutsy team.
Many fans had postseason hopes for this team and had them fighting for the division. Now, that can still happen but, for yet another year, the Mets are falling out of the race by Memorial Day. The Mets FO knew the holes this team had in the offseason. And they didnt even entertain filling them. At least to a large degree. And with the moves they did make, they managed to set this franchise back years...which is one of the only things they are good at. Im sure some fans already have their normal excuses already lined up. Cool.
But sure, gutsy win.
I hope your dreams come true...but as history has shown us, we have about another 11 years before the team lucks into a competitive season again.
This week has been a testament to what can happen when you embrace the minimum level of accountability and make positive changes. 1 week doesn't make a team or manager or GM and I still have concerns on all 3 but .500 at memorial day is at least a pulse. The run differential is down to just -13. Things are trending in the right direction because the previous regime left the cupboard of young talent full to build around.
Now it's on BVW to mold a winner over the rest of the season. Once the draft pick goes away, Keuchel (my preference) or Kimbrel should be part of that given that they're now likely recovering more $ from Cespedes than previously expected. You can never have enough pitching. He also better hit this draft out of the fucking park to make us forget about Kelenic just a little bit. I'd be lying if I said I had any hope of Mickey being part of the solution so if there's another dip or if there are any moments where he thinks the lockerroom is gone he's got to have a backup plan ready to go as well. Also needs to be prepared to minimize Cano's presence if he doesn't get going and other players deserve more playing time.

A fun thing to do while wondering why your team hasn't signed Dallas Keuchel or Craig Kimbrel is to look up the record for the draft pick compensation they're supposedly so afraid to lose. The Mets would lose the 53rd pick. The best player picked there in 30 years is Sean Casey.

Yes, the draft pick is negligible. But it might not even be whats holding them back. These pitchers might me waiting for the draft pick issue to go away before signing in an effort to maximize their offers. Im sure there are a number of teams waiting so they dont lose the draft pick that could start a bidding war.
But the logic of teams waiting to avoid giving up the draft pick is silly.

ahh... I hope they can resign him to the AAA squad. he provided nice defensive depth. That slide Friday night against the Tigers in the OF to prevent the ball from going past him and saving a run was a veteran skill that needs to be taught.
His walks are low and his K rate is increasing... hopefully he's close to regaining last years dominance.
LGM!
