More random heroics

We have the ugliest lineup in the world right now. Conforto cant return tomorrow fast enough. Aside from one idiotic decision to pitch Vargas out of the pen, he's been pretty good. Wheeler for the series tomorrow!

tho Vargas had his usual short but 1 ER outing...after that Bashlor & Gsellman give up 2 & 1 run respectively - the two pitching well

Diaz finally used for a 4-out attempt and blows his first save of 2019 on the first batter

Then you have Font, Zamora & Santiago go for 0 ER over the next 5 innings from the 9th on

Still nuts they really struggle vs the worst teams but they've been entertaining games and a W is a W

I don't care of PhiPsi (who I have no issues with) likes the "gutsy" label or not, but when you get outhit 14 - 7 (many of the Mets hits in xtras) and Tomas Nido hits a walk off HR to win it, that is a team winning games they could easily lose.

I call it gutsy.

I agree. This lineup is kind of reminiscent of Mayberry, Campbell, et al. But they�re finding ways to win, which is great to see. And a different guy each day. Staying afloat.

Like I said last night, teams can have gutsy or gritty wins. All of them do. I�m just not going to call the Mets a gutsy or gritty team. They are under .500 and have a difficult time beating teams worse than they are. You can call this a gutsy win. I�d call it a fight to be the tallest midget. I love watching my team win but I have a hard time getting excited watching the Mets struggle to beat worse teams...if they even defeat them at all.

The Yankees have fielded a team of backups through much of this season and are still plowing through the field. That�s a gritty and gutsy team.

Many fans had postseason hopes for this team and had them fighting for the division. Now, that can still happen but, for yet another year, the Mets are falling out of the race by Memorial Day. The Mets FO knew the holes this team had in the offseason. And they didn�t even entertain filling them. At least to a large degree. And with the moves they did make, they managed to set this franchise back years...which is one of the only things they are good at. I�m sure some fans already have their normal excuses already lined up. Cool.

But sure, gutsy win.

my bar was meaningful August baseball, so hopefully they stay competitive enough until then to make my dream come true.

the season to mean something in AUGUST and rarely ever get that. It�s just a very very poorly run team with owners that don�t really care to prioritize winning. Owners that use the ballclub as their personal bank account for their real business.

I hope your dreams come true...but as history has shown us, we have about another 11 years before the team lucks into a competitive season again.

well, at least some things - we know the wilpons are a pox on the franchise and there's no way to change that. Their impact needs to be overcome and that's no small task.

This week has been a testament to what can happen when you embrace the minimum level of accountability and make positive changes. 1 week doesn't make a team or manager or GM and I still have concerns on all 3 but .500 at memorial day is at least a pulse. The run differential is down to just -13. Things are trending in the right direction because the previous regime left the cupboard of young talent full to build around.

Now it's on BVW to mold a winner over the rest of the season. Once the draft pick goes away, Keuchel (my preference) or Kimbrel should be part of that given that they're now likely recovering more $ from Cespedes than previously expected. You can never have enough pitching. He also better hit this draft out of the fucking park to make us forget about Kelenic just a little bit. I'd be lying if I said I had any hope of Mickey being part of the solution so if there's another dip or if there are any moments where he thinks the lockerroom is gone he's got to have a backup plan ready to go as well. Also needs to be prepared to minimize Cano's presence if he doesn't get going and other players deserve more playing time.

A fun thing to do while wondering why your team hasn't signed Dallas Keuchel or Craig Kimbrel is to look up the record for the draft pick compensation they're supposedly so afraid to lose. The Mets would lose the 53rd pick. The best player picked there in 30 years is Sean Casey.

Yes, the draft pick is negligible. But it might not even be what�s holding them back. These pitchers might me waiting for the draft pick issue to go away before signing in an effort to maximize their offers. I�m sure there are a number of teams waiting so they don�t lose the draft pick that could start a bidding war.

obviously no reason for Keuchel or Kimbrel to sign until after the draft.

But the logic of teams waiting to avoid giving up the draft pick is silly.

with the Mets is a fucking joke. This will be the Gio situation all over again. These GMs always think they are smarter than they really are. Too little too late. The Mets mantra.

ahh... I hope they can resign him to the AAA squad. he provided nice defensive depth. That slide Friday night against the Tigers in the OF to prevent the ball from going past him and saving a run was a veteran skill that needs to be taught.
