B.J. HILL, DT, NEW YORK GIANTS Did you know that B.J. Hill set the rookie record for sacks by a New York Giant? I didn't, before I started writing this post. But 5.5 is indeed the record, and was good enough for second on the Giants' team last year after Olivier Vernon. Hill leveraged a strong senior season and Senior Bowl into a Day 2 selection, and with the Giants, he moved from an interior alignment to a big 3-4 role under DC James Bettcher. His length, size, and quickness shined on the outside, and the Giants should expect him, Dalvin Tomlinson, and rookie Dexter Lawrence to form a fearsome interior for the seasons to come.” |
Officially, Strahan holds the NYG career record, but if you count LT's 9.5 sacks his rookie year, LT still holds it.
I wonder if there is a way to figure out how effective a sack is. 3rd downs, big losses, etc.
Hill wasn't playing full time either, folks. He should improve this year and provide a good pass rusher for the Giants.
He did. 4.5.
Correction, it was UncleDave not George and it wasn't a few weeks but only last week. My original response to Bucky's breakout player thread - here
Kid was an obvious stud in preseason, the Russell Wilson of DEs. Iirc Snacks said he was the best DL on the team, or something to that effect.

but the NFL didn't keep sack records back then.

By .5, which is pretty funny.

JPP had 4.5 as a rookie and 16.5 his second yar. I don't expect Hill to get that many but i think he can be in the double digits.
He broke the streak of terrible 3rd round picks.

Wow, that's a bad list.
I would imagine that Dexter L could also do this on occasion. It's another position / scheme variety thing.
The 'inside / out 5', contain the pocket with bigs and run blitz the interior using 2 lbs and one DL.

Go back 30+ years; it gets even worse (except for Justin Tuck). Either a bust, injury-prone, or very often a catastrophic, career-ending injury. Several years ago I began a thread titled, "The Curse of the 3rd Round" because of that.
Tomlinson (25), isn't going anywhere, anytime soon. It appears he's been taking the majority of his snaps as the 1st team NT, as they shift Lawrence around. They've also got him on his rookie deal for the next two seasons.
Pierre (27), like Markus Golden, is on a one-year deal, and is also trying to return to the form he had when Bettcher was his DC in Arizona (2017). He was awful last year, but there's reason to believe that that was because of the change in scheme after Bettcher left. We'll see. In any event, the Giants will most likely keep both of them this year, along with R.J. McIntosh, and maybe the DT they drafted late.
Seriously doubt it. There have been no rumors of any trouble with Tomlinson either on the field or in the locker room.

Why is Chad Jones on there? He crapped out because of his accident, not because he wasn't able.
There are LTs and there is everybody else. I always have good expectations but after 70 so years as a giant fan, i have learned, year by year, day by day.
I had made a thread on this exact record towards the end of last year, and there was a lot of talk about how it's not a real record because of LT. While there is some truth to that, 5.5 sacks is a great year for a rookie DL.
Gee that's going out on a limb ;)

He's another 3rd round crap out...
Giving the person doing the drafting a pass because the guy they picked doesn't pan out due to an injury is not the point... the bottom line is the guy didnt pan out.
It may seem harsh but injuries dont factor in for me deciding whether a pick is a bust... either they produce after there name gets called or they dont. Keep it simple. Chad Jones is a big time bust. Could have happened to anyone, yes, but it just happened to be our 3rd round pick who's career ended before it got started, no one else's. Therefore he definitely gets included.
Chad Jones
crazy how Chad Jones was probably the best pick out of that group but had a tragic accident cut him short.
