I've been wanting to get into it for a few years now but haven't been able to find a deal on a couple boards for the wife and I. A friend of mine scored one on Amazon of all places for $400 with a paddle. It is a foam one, not inflatable. Of course they're sold out now.
Looking to bite the bullet and spend a few bucks on a couple boards, but want to keep it reasonable for something we'll probably only use a handful of times each year. Any recommendation on brands, types, or places to buy?
I am far from an expert only having done it a handful of times, but my suggestion would be to rent first if you are in a location where that's an option (there are several state parks near me that have lakes that rent paddleboards).
Try a couple out and see what you like. I rented it for the week when we rented a beach house, and it probably cost more than some of the ones you're looking at it did to buy, but it was convenient and gave me a baseline to work from if I decided I ever wanted to buy one (I do not - fun, easy to pick up, but just don't think I'd use it enough).
it also depends on where you plan to paddleboard.
Lake is very different than ocean (if there are waves) so an expert may give you a different recommendation based on the location you plan to use it.
We rented in Maui and went in the ocean. Some of the small waves were a little tough for first timers, but I'm not all that interested in taking it into the ocean at the Cape. I'm in long enough and deep enough to relieve myself and I'm out of there.
Well, you can, but...

LOL. about the same as me. I rented in Mashpee. Popponessett - not far from Robert Kraft's "house". Changing topics, how do you like Eastham? We're looking at maybe investing in a second home and I love the cape, so many different areas though, I only really know Falmouth and Mashpee.

We have a home in Eastham so I'll take it to the bay beaches and also a few of the ponds.

Eastham is great. I like it because it's quiet in terms of "tourists" compared to other towns, and the national seashore is absolutely gorgeous. First encounter is a nice bay beach if you have kids or want to do something like SUP. We prefer Nauset Light over Coastguard but you cant go wrong with either really. There are a few good food spots, but again it's quieter than other towns. I also like being between Wellfleet and Orleans for stuff to do.
I like Coast Guard too.
And we go to the Beach Comber in wellfleet (Cahoon Hollow) too, I love the Beach Comber - that whole area of the cape is great, but for me it's usually a day trip.
The farthest I've stayed is Orleans - my little one had a hockey tournament so it was November. Quiet but still nice. Land Ho was a cool spot to eat.
Man I can't wait to get back!
I would rent though, if you won't be using it a lot. Otherwise, unless you have a pickup truck, transporting them has a small hassle factor.
Love the Cape... Eastham down to Truro to me is like "old Cape Cod"... you really get the laid back Cape vibe... If I could I would sell and move down there today. I'm in sales and travel a lot off Cape so its just more feasible for me to be in more of a commuter town.
no matter what you decide you cant go wrong buying on the Cape... Houses maintain their value and rise quicker than most areas... Even coming out of the 2008 recession our houses came back to value fairly rapidly (wish I had the balls to buy a couple rentals in 2008-2009)...
good luck on your search
GO GIANTS!

Thank you (and for all replies to my millered thread comment).
My wife was/is pushing for Narragansett, RI, because then we could rent it during the fall/winter to college students. but I don't want to do that, I have seen too many of those houses though, many become shit holes really quickly.
Upside to doing that obviously is the income. Renting from September to May can pay the mortgage all year depending on the mortgage. And summer we could do what we want, stay there all summer, rent, or some combo of both.
I figured if we bought a Cape house we'd rent it during a lot of the summer anyway (at this point) because our kids have so many summer activities we just can't get there every week. and once the kids are older stop renting it and just spend summers there.
still just casually looking, getting familiar with locations outside of Falmouth and Mashpee, but thanks again for the replies.
