Slot CB

flycatcher : 5/26/2019 9:45 am
Let’s say Beal continues to pan out as a solid starting outside CB, do you put Baker in the slot, in keeping with the theory of having your best players on the field? Baker seems to be a prototypical outside CB, but it would sure be cool to potentially have 3 shut-down-caliber corners out there on third downs. Is slot CB that much of a different skill set than playing on the outside?
We have four young corners and all of them seem pretty versatile.

So I guess they all get looked at in training camp and pre-season and the ones who impress the most get the starting slots and the playing time. I think Beal and Love should see some time at safety as well.
I think Baker is the

outside CB. Beal, Love or somebody else will be slot DB.
Playing the slot is completely different than playing on the outside.

Just because corners play the slot most of the time does not mean they are the same position. In fact, I can make the argument they are completely different.
The plan should be

Jackrabbit and either Beal or Baker on the outside this year with the other at slot. Love will work in at both cb and FS.

Next season JR will be released saving 11.2 mil and Baker and Beal will be the outside cb and either Love or someone else will be the slot.

I would like to see Love moved to FS permanently (at least next season). Its easier to find a slot cb than a starting FS.

either way we have fantastic depth at cb this year!!
My opinion...

...that guy we drafted out of Georgia plays on the outside. What I saw of him in college is that he's like flypaper wrapped around receivers!
I figure the Giants have Grant Haley penciled in as their slot CB.
Klaatu : 5/26/2019 10:05 am : link
With his competition mostly coming from Julian Love. My guess is they'd like to leave Baker and Beal on the outside, especially post-Jenkins. There's also the possibility of seeing Peppers utilized in the slot on occasion.
Perhaps

by 2020 Beal and Baker are starting on the outside with Love in the slot, but I'd love to see Jenkins stick arpund, you can't have too many good cover guys.

I love the optimism about the CBs. I hope it continues.
Ivan15 : 5/26/2019 10:15 am : link
Fortunately, DBs are about the only position that can be evaluated during OTAs. Except for tackling ability.
Would not be surprised
Coach Red Beaulieu : 5/26/2019 10:29 am : link
To see Peppers play a bunch of snaps in the slot. Should at least be an option in Betcher's thinking.

If both Baker and Beal are the real deal

and are both shutdown corners. Jackrabbit will end up cut to save cap space. You can't leave a shutdown corner on the bench.

One, how many shutdown corners are there anymore? Two, you would rather have a shutdown corner cut than have one on the bench? Yeah, that makes perfect sense.
I you have 3 shutdown corners you should have an elite

defense if you can stop the run, it lets you do so much on defense it's ridiculous. That term is thrown around way too much. There are probably 5 guys in the NFL that can claim that title in any given year. JJ was one of them in 2016, hopefully he can get back there.

That being said the optimism here about our defensive backs is insane! I think JJ returns to form this year and Peppers arrow is pointing up and will be one of the best safeties in the game. On the flip side Bethea is old as dirt and people are expecting ROOKIE corners, Beal included, to come in and play at an absurd level. History has shown otherwise. Most good corners come in the league and struggle for most of their first season. It is the hardest position from college to NFL hands down.

You see the same thing in the draft. People getting way to excited about late round draft picks, or projecting Pro Bowl level play to 1st and 2nd round picks right out the gate. It is insane. Saw someone in another thread say the Eagles had the best draft and not to worry about their offensive line because they drafted the best LT in the draft at 22. LT's that can come in and play at an NFL level do not last all the way to 22 except in the most rare of circumstances.
The ability of these guys to play man defense will determine how

comfortable Bettcher is in blitzing. He didn't do it much last season, because he couldn't depend on his defensive backs. That's also a reason for not signing Collins.
No, you keep Baker on the outside
BillT : 5/26/2019 11:59 am : link
By next year he will be a starter on the outside and he need all the reps he can get if he’s not starting this year. Love and Haley compete for the slot position.
Slot Corner And Center

The number of people on this site that diminish both of these positions by constantly saying we'll find someone in the later rounds to play this position drives me nuts. Slot corner is just as important as playing on the outside. Haven't enough of us seen how we get burnt in the middle of the field on a constant basis. Brady has made a living tearing up the league in this manner.

Also, just to agree with whoever said playing the outside and playing the slot require completely different skill sets couldn't be more right.

With the number of promising DB's we have this year and with the promising play of Haley last year, maybe we'll finally have the slot corner that can get us off the field on 3rd down.
I hate to say this
Giantimistic : 5/26/2019 12:26 pm : link
But injuries will largely determine our cornerback lineup so it is hard to say.

Obviously, we have to see how this plays out with the rookie DBs and JJ, their play specifically and that of the d generally. But if the group plays well, I don't necessarily see Jackrabbit as an automatic cut. Maybe he re-structures for some cap flexibility. He's getting up there in years and maybe he doesn't want to bounce around so much any more--we'll see how he takes to the mentoring thing.

And I don't think I'm alone in assessing his play last year: down year? For sure. 2018, down year (good start, then down hill). I believe the quality of his play is directly related to whether a season, a possible berth, a team possibly on the rise, is on the line. When a season goes to hell and a handbasket, yeah, his motivation and focus suffer. Ideal, no, but for some reason, maybe not just positionally, DG and PS have kept him around even when the other products of the 2016 splurge were traded at positions of equivalent need.
Continues to Pan Out

That’s where you lost me. Can he play in an exhibition game at least?
With the size and shape of slot receivers, you may need two.
Ivan15 : 5/26/2019 4:54 pm : link
One big and one smaller, quicker.
No offense..
FatMan in Charlotte : 5/26/2019 4:56 pm : link
but who on this board can even adequately address who can play slot when we have hardly any visibility into the skill sets of the CB's?

We have several promising, young CB's. where they play will become evident very quickly.

No, Giants org need to waste roster spots on scholarships, mascots and 2 QBs behind an iron man QB.

Absolutely. and he’s a strong tackler too. Amazing that we got him, can’t wait to see him on the field
Jenkins given his age and being nicked here and there
bLiTz 2k : 5/27/2019 7:39 am : link
I could totally see him becoming a 2016 DRC type player. Sits out on the base D on first down, and he comes in on sub packages. Being a crafty vet with a ton of skill he would probably fare better in the slot than Baker or Beal.
Odds are the Julian Love will play most of the snaps in the slot
Jay on the Island : 5/27/2019 12:39 pm : link
Grant Haley will see his fair share as well. One factor that gives Love the leg up is his physical style and blitzing ability.
