What is Will Hernandez's upside? (for lono especially)

BlueLou'sBack : 5/26/2019 5:35 pm
For shits and giggles I was comparing Nick Chubb's full season rookie highlights vs Barkley's. Seems some Browns' fans feel that Mayfield should have received the OROY award, since Chubb graded out higher than Barkley among PFF's RB grades. Which is besides the point...

Anyway as on might anticipate, Chubb's highlights, while electric, don't compare to Barkley's because Barkley has to do so much more on his own, starting with what looks like a jailbreak at the LOS where dodging 1 or more guys before he even gets to the LOS, and/or is bouncing stuff outside because there is no hole where it's supposed to be between the tackles... Chubb had many more opportunities to take the rock through discernible holes between the tackles or off tackle, somthing that should be at least partially fixed by Zeitler being a Giant now and not a Brown.

Anyway, getting back to my point, at 14:55 time mark of this link video of Barkely's season highlights, from the Giants' own 14 yard line, the Giants' run a screen pass to SB to the left side. Pulley doesn't get anyone, he whiffs on a DB, and Hernandez gets the key screen block that springs SB for an easy 10 yeards.

What stands out about the block is not how Hernandez obliterates or wipes out his opponent, but about WH executes the block in by the book fashion: he squares him up, locks on with two hands opposite his opponents shoulder pads - hands inside so no penalty can be called - and drives his opponent 10 yards downfield, keeping him locked up so he cannot get involved in the play at all.

It's pretty much perfect execution of a screen block, and what really stands out (to me) about it was whom it's laid on - 55, Leighton Vander Esch. Esch is a big, powerful, extremely athletic and mobile LB, and he gives WH a hell of a shrug right after Will contacts him... But to no avail; he can't dislodge from WH's block.

That's the way you write that play up for your OG. Hernandez can end up an All Pro OG IMO, sooner than later.
Barkley season highlights, dial it in to the 14:55 time mark to see the play - ( New Window )
Nothing of substance to add

Other than that video made it move a little. Is it September yet? Or even July?

Chubb was not rated higher than Barkley

By PFF, was a point in November he graded higher and Browns fans freaked out, but Barkley finished higher on the year and was chosen as sole RB for Pff first team all pro(mcaffery was 2nd team not Chubb).

On top of that Chubbs oline was ranked second in the league by pff, and Baker Mayfield was pffs chocie for rookie of the year over Barkley and their 9th rated passer. Meanwhile Giants oline predictably rated in bottom 3rd in NFL, and Eli rated as their 28th ranked passer.

Chubb talk is laughable, stick him in Giants offense and he’s an afterthought not oroy.

Exactly!

Matt - any thoughts on Hernandez going forward?

You might do a more thorough fact check before making concrete unfounded statements

Chubb graded out higher than Barkley for the entire year, but did not have the minimum 600 snaps to qualify for the first team or 2nd team all NFL honors as Saquon and McCaffrey did.

Barkley earned 85.9, Chubb 87.5.

The bigger point is I doubt the grades are normalized to exclude the effect of playing with his team's specific line, and Chubb played with a much better OL.
His development reminds me

a lot of Chris Snee's. Though Chris player RG, not LG, things were a little rough to start his rookie year, but then he really improved as the year went on. Then he played at a Hall of Fame level for the next few years...

Cleveland sort of is an olinemen factory.

Really did I make a lot concrete unfounded statements? Take them one be one and enlighten me.

I did already. So on top of being incorrect about Barkley's higher grade, you want to come of like a douche? What's the agenda? I agree with what you said about Chubb running behind the Giants' OL, but didn't see the point of insulting Chubb while you're at it?
chubb had a handful

of long runs and catch and runs for tds early in the season when he was getting 3 touches a game(so mad i didn't hold on to him in fantasy)

that probably inflates his ratings

That's not how running the football works. You can't exclude the outliers. A big part of Barkley's value is that "handful" of 40+ yard TD runs. Those all count.
I don't know if he'll end up as an All-Pro sooner or later, or at all
Klaatu : 5/27/2019 9:21 am : link
But if he plays like a Pro Bowl Alternate for the next ten years or so, I'll be very, very happy.
on the field he reminds me of Incognito

some plays dominant, some plays big mistakes. Explosive athlete for the position but not always great technique. When the team around him improves and can help mask some of his deficiencies and everything clicks for him mentally within the scheme he will have some pro bowl years.
This Chubb Barkley stuff is worth watching this year.

The Giants o-line should be better and the Browns o-line may decline a little. I'm curious to see the effects on the 2 rb's.
It's an affront to me
Coach Red Beaulieu : 5/27/2019 11:31 am : link
And I feel personally offended that someone would dare compare some filthy mortal to Barkley.
