Heard this on Boomer this morning. What an arrogant ass.
Seaver did NOT choose the nickname- it was bestowed on him because he earned it. Brady crowning himself as Tom Terrific is just one more reason to dislike him.
Tom Bradys Tom Terrific Trademark Request Appalls Met Fans - (
New Window )
So with the upcoming 50th Anniversary celebration and although Seaver won't be there, I am sure you will hear the name Tom terrific mentioned many times. Does that mean Brady is going to sue all those who write/say that nickname?
Brady is a Johnny come lately trying to steal what someone else has created. Shady Brady the cheater, no surprise.
The real one and only Tom Terrific. - ( New Window )
Well Tom Brady is clearly worthy of being called "Tom Terrific"
I was more outraged over how LaDanian Tomlinson usurped the LT moniker.
And the pats are fucking dirty. Just wait. It will all come out one day.
this seems like Ivan Rodriguez trademarking "pudge"
But let's say someone in the NY (or elsewhere) media referred to Seaver that way after Brady legally owns it. Then what? Fuck you Brady.
Imagine if Tomlinson tried to do such a thing with "LT." lol
Your act is so tired. Just a month or so after one of the most legendary and revered athletes in NY history retired from public life due to dementia, Brady decides he wants to use it exclusively? And you wonder why people get upset about it?
That says more about you than anyone else on this thread.
Most older Patriots fans outside of New England were Niners fans in the 80s. Frontrunners.
The rest of their fan base is comprised of casuals.
Once the BB ride is over the Pats won't have any fans.
Not once.
But he's trademarking it?
Uh.
Sure looks like Brady to me. I think that's Gronk next to him,
i've lived up here since before Brady was on the team. they don't call him that. they call him TB12 maybe. maybe i've heard him called that once.

to most Patriot fans, there was no history before Brady. Go ahead and ask any of them about anything that happened before and they'd be hard pressed to name any Patriot player other than Andre Tippett, or even be aware the Patriots played football before 2001, they certainly didn't watch. So it makes sense that Seaver didn't exist.

I've recounted this on BBI before. I was a student at Boston College from 1992-1996. When I first got to school there, Dick MacPherson was the head coach and no one in that town gave 2 shits about the Pats. I spoke to my roommates who were more or less your representative fan base (from in and around Boston, down by the South Shore, etc) . They were pretty clear how the city felt about their sports. It was Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins, and Patriots. In that order.
When Parcells and Bledsoe arrived, things started to shift, ever so slightly. I remember watching a game on TV in 1993 that was a Pats homegame and my roommates were stunned because they couldn't remember the last time the Patriots were on TV at home since the blackout rule always kept them off. Growing up in NJ, and the Giants and Jets always sold out, I had no idea what they were talking about.
And because the Giants played at the Yale Bowl and were in the NFC, there were tons of Giants fans up there when I was at school. The Giants were Boston's "NFC team" and since they had success in the 1980s, many fans up there jumped on that bandwaggon.
Hell, I knew more about their team than they did (I'd ask about Mosi Tatupu and Marv Cook and get blank stares). They only knew about Andre Tippett. Oh, and Zeke Mowatt because of his sexual harassment mess.
867-5309. 867-5309.
Dick move.
Patriot fans are front runners. I've worked in Boston TV Sports for most of my adult life and before Brady, as others have said here the Pats were NEVER on home TV. They couldn't sell out the High School field they played on because NO One Cared. It wasn't until Parcells came aboard that things started to change.
I worked at the ABC affiliate in Boston with the Dean of Boston TV Sports, the late Don Gillis. Don would tell me stories about the rabid NY Giant fan base in New England. More people would watch the Giants on any given Sunday than the Pats (when they were away) in the AFL and early NFL days. Back in the late 60's early 70's the Boston stations would cover the Giants in training camp. That's how popular the Giants were in NE.
And for Tom Terrific..that's blasphemy ..It will and always be Tom "Terrific" Seaver.

I think they had a little bump in popularity when Raymond Berry coached them. But you're right they never seemed to have a large die-hard fan base.
Is it the PatenT Office that handles this? We should all write objecting

I don't like the guy, and as a Seaver fan hate the idea of this but does someone need to show prior use in order to trademark something?
That should happen unless the pull of the $ is too strong

Brady explained the Tom Terrific trademark request. He didnt like the nickname and didnt want others to use it with his likeness so he was, in effect, squatting on it. Regrets that it got spun around. We will have the story and sound shortlu

I don't get it, he didn't like the nickname, so he wanted to trademark it so no one called him it? Tom, you are a "shithead", quick get your lawyers on it.
They were talking about this on WFAN this morning. Apparently Boomer went on WEEI yesterday and was giving it to Brady. The massholes in turn came out in full force to shit on Boomer.
Just a weird situation all around. Brady could have just been the bigger name and dropped it.
So one way to avoid it was to trademark it himself making it illegal for anyone to include his name and likeness on any merchandise or commercial purpose (except of course him - which he said he has no plans to do).
That's my interpenetration of the events.
he would have been better off just saying "out of respect for Tom Seaver, I trademarked it so no one could use the name with my likeness"

You summed it up perfectly right here.
