Oshane Ximines: 3rd-round steal on the edge?

Beezer : 6/5/2019 6:34 pm
Apologies if I missed any other chats about this guy. How's he doing in the camps?

This article says he was the "most underrated pas rusher in the country."

"He's one of the most disruptive players I've coached in 30 years."

Dude looks relentless.
X-man highlights. - ( New Window )
I must admit that

I was NOT a fan of the pick... Happy to, and hoping to eat my hat with fava beans & a nice Chiaaanti,
Here are two reviews from draftniks I respect...

Ximines isn’t an explosive athlete on tape and that was confirmed at the Combine. There is a smoothness to him though and although there’s no “Wow” get off, before you know it, he’s by his man and getting pressure. When he’s attacking the outside half of the tackle, there’s a little tightness in the hips, so that arc on his speed rush isn’t super-tight and he can lose balance and spend too much time on the ground. However, his hand use is good and he has a nice pull move. His counter when his initial move doesn’t work can improve though, as can his recognition against the run, particularly zone-read stuff. He’s an interesting prospect and a little tough to rank, but he has ability and there’s still some upside there, although he lacks a very high ceiling.

Drew Boylhart...

Oshane reminds me of Vikings Danielle Hunter. Danielle played for LSU and is bigger and stronger and was selected in the 3rd round, pick number 88. Oshane has that type of talent, but needs more time to develop and gain confidence. When he does Oshane, could accumulate double digit sacks… my guess that would be in his third year or so. Danielle Hunter has been worth the development and I do believe that Oshane will be also. Developmental pass rushers like any pass rusher are at a premium and I wouldn’t be surprised if Oshane is selected earlier that his TBR grade suggest. Of course, the level of competition will concern some teams as to what round to select Oshane in and then, some teams will not care, they will select him based on a size/speed ratio…development be damned.

Sounds like the Giants got 3rd round value with their 3rd round pick. Time will tell if he's a steal or not.
yes, he's a steal
Bill in UT : 6/5/2019 6:55 pm : link
Or not. Having never seen him play in the NFL, I'm not sure I've read enough to make a sound determination.
Carl Banks likes him.
Klaatu : 6/5/2019 7:00 pm : link
Of course, what does he know about playing Linebacker?
I wasn’t a fan of the pick as well,
prdave73 : 6/5/2019 7:01 pm : link
especially since he’s from a small school and doesn’t have great speed. We will have to wait see. The pass rush on this team is a real concern, and will be worse if he doesn’t pan out.

Most important note of the day was Oshane Ximines was receiving some first-team reps. I didn't expect that.

Golden was on the shelf. Next man up would be Ximines according to your own Depth Chart. Booyah!
What I love about him is that he practices
BSIMatt : 6/5/2019 7:36 pm : link
Stripping the ball/forcing fumbles. Eric posted a video of a giants live interview with the old dominion coach and he talked about the work he put in practicing stripping the ball....11 career forced fumbles shows that work paid off. On top of that the work and study he put in on developing pass rush moves/counters. I’ll have to find the interview, but his coach basically told him you are going to be double teamed every single game you play in, you need to learn how to beat double teams...and his production shows he was able to do that as well.
It is still good to see him in there getting first team reps
BSIMatt : 6/5/2019 7:41 pm : link
Even if it was due to injury. He looks like he’s definitely got a shot to factor in to the pass rush rotation this year.

To be fair, we barely have two competent pass rusher starters and they can't take every rep - it shouldn't be all too surprising our 3rd round picks gets a view 1st team reps in mini camp or later.

On flip side, if a 3rd round pick at a position that normally has some rotation isn't getting any action that's a problem, because a 3rd rounder at such a position should be having a contributing role, even if small, during the regular season.
Boylharts take seems spot on in this case...
Torrag : 6/5/2019 8:25 pm : link
and I don't always agree with him. We drafted him where we should have and it's going to take some time to really reap the benefits of the pick.

No, Golden returned to practice today. Both he and Carter started outside.

I don't necessarily agree with that. Based on Bettcher's comments (and what has transpired this spring in the pecking order), they expect Golden and Carter to be "the" guys outside.

I'm rooting for Ximenes now. We need ERs.

I didn't say the coaches don't have two guys, I said the two guys barely competent :)

But jokes aside (I do like LZ's potential, and hope Golden can get something of past glory), I don't think it should be surprising OX is getting some 1st team reps. It is a position where there's a rotation during games, as opposed to an o-line position, for instance - and I do contend if a third round pass rusher isn't intriguing enough for coaches to want to see what can do against starters that's the bigger surprise.
Don't forget, Ximines is learning a new position.
Klaatu : 6/5/2019 8:55 pm : link
At ODU he played mostly DE in an even front. Now he's playing OLB. He was drafted just about where most prognosticators had him going, and he's certainly worth developing. He'll probably make his rookie bones on special teams, but he could get some opportunities as a situational pass-rusher. I figure he needs to bulk up a little and he'll probably do that this season. I'm looking forward to seeing him when the pads come on and the hitting starts.
That forced fumbles thing usually bodes
idiotsavant : 6/5/2019 9:04 pm : link
Well. Also recovered fumbles, batted passes, in addition to (generally speaking) tackles and sacks. Shows a head for the game.
I wouldn't limit this type of kid to
idiotsavant : 6/5/2019 9:09 pm : link
The so called passing downs.

In this system he can be up at the line on any down if it's drawn up well.

It still may need to be more blitz like, in that he may not have the power yet.

He has to show that he can set the edge, first...defend the run as well as rush the passer. Barring injuries to other players, there's no need to rush him along.
He doesn't have the athleticism or bend
Section331 : 6/6/2019 8:35 am : link
you see in elite ER's, but that doesn't mean he can't be an effective pass rusher. Strahan wasn't the most athletic guy either. I like that X-man can hold the edge on running plays. I do think there will be a learning curve due to the level he played at ODU, but by all accounts, he is smart and relentless. Guys like that succeed more often than not.
Supposedly Redskins left tackle
idiotsavant : 6/6/2019 9:49 am : link
Is quitting the team. Had a serious health scare and says they didn't support him in it.
I love the Giants draft...
x meadowlander : 6/6/2019 1:49 pm : link
...but to me, he's the one pick that is a reach and a gamble, screams bust, another typical Giants 3rd round pick... does not look explosive or overly fast on tape, just looks like he was playing at a low level of competition.

The good news is I really am a horrible draft analyst, proven by years of mediocrity.

How is he a reach when he went late in the 3rd (95) where almost everyone from Boylhart to Zierlein figured he'd go? 95 is 21 picks later than where the Giants drafted Jay Bromley and Owamagbe Odighizuwa, and 14 picks later than Damontre Moore. Now those were reaches.
