be really good? I keep hearing his name in every report I read. Sounds like he was supposed to be a 3-5 round pick if it wasn’t for a now cleared heart condition.
I know, I know, it’s way early, etc., but it’s cool to hear he’s looking good regardless.
It was from his former teammate and said he wouldn't be surprised if he turned into a George Kittle type player. Wasn't an exact comparison. He was just saying they were somewhat similar.
Conrad isn't that class of an athlete. 4.77 at pro day, and pro day times usually run a tenth faster than the combine. Nine and a half foot broad jump.
Conrad has enough athleticism to be effective, and we can all hope, but I wouldn't jump to the Kittle comparison based on the superficial. ajc - ( New Window )

Also do to his health scare at the combine and waiting for tests he wasn't really able to fully train for his Pro Day (He missed Kentucky's Pro Day due to the health concerns)
every off-season there's someone who looks great in practice, and then is never heard of again.
The other problem is who are the Giants going to cut to make room for him? Engram, Ellison or Simonson, all of whom have been productive when given touches and have NFL experience.
His best shot might be PS.
I have been watching everything I can find on the kid Â

Scott Simonson isn't keeping anybody off the roster. He's literally the definition of journeyman. He's been on 3 teams in 4 years and has a grand total of 96 receiving yards with 1 TD.

Simonson sucks. He cane be easily cut without any worry of who will replace him.
I think the Giants may hsve hit the jackpot with this kid. Â
Here it is again: "Conrad’s blocking ability is a big reason why Benny Snell became the school’s all-time leading rusher."
Considering who his competition is, I'd say he's got a good chance to make the team, even if the Giants decide to keep Ellison. Engram's a lock, but Simonson and Dickerson certainly aren't, not both of them, anyway, and who knows what the Giants are going to do with Dungey?
If Conrad continues to impress, especially when the pads come on and the hitting starts, it's a safe bet that he'll stick.
I would not be surprised if Rhett were cut at the END of camp. I don't think he can be traded for anything unless it is a multiple player kind of deal or something "crazy" like that.
Rhett wasn't a very effective blocker, by most accounts, and if he doesn't show well in camp and Conrad does, hey, crazier things have happened.
But, YES, I have a feeling this kid is going to end up being a really good addition to the team. I think he makes the final 53 coming out of camp (assuming healthy, etc.). There has been a lot of positive reports on him, and not just football related.

Ok. LOL.

This makes no sense. If Conrad makes the 53 it will be instead of Simonson not Ellison.
stranger things have happened in a salary cap world... no?
-what say they want to extend engram like they did shephard? -what if someone interesting is cut from another camp?
-what if we have a major injury and have to trade for a contract?
i'm just saying I could see it happening
Sometimes speed isn't the most important thing for a receiver or Â
a tight end. Can he stop suddenly and accelerate out of his cuts? I've read that he's a good blocker, has good hands and is effective in the red zone. We'll see.

Agreed.
I view Dungey as a wild card; if Shurmur decides to keep him around ("You can always use a player.") his designation may as well be "#53" rather than "TE/QB". That is, I don't think he'll count against a quota for either position.
If Conrad lives up to expectations as a blocker, all he needs is the great hands he showed at UK and enough athleticism to sneak off his block to catch a short pass.
He doesn't have to split the seam like Bavaro.
is going to have to really impress to make the team.
He's here to see if there's any value he can bring as a weapon to the offense, but he's going to have to prove he can give a significant edge either as a Taysom Hill type guy or as a really athletic H-Back/TE.
The vast majority of times, those guys are tweeners and just end up being a failed experiment.
Only time he dropped the ball was when it was thrown to high and he would have to take a hit. Last season he decided to go for the catch knowing he was going to take a bad hit then suffered a concession. Eli had 3 WRs injured in one game 2 season ago, id rather Engram let the ball go then be out a ton of games
I think preseason games are the barometer for him. Taller guys in non contact practices will shine catching the ball, no one can body them up to defend or slow the release much so right now he's tall and can catch.
If Conrad is the as advertised blocker, he will not only make roster Â
but he will be active every game and start in the base offense. He will not be a 3 down player, as he will come out in passing situations.
Roster jeopardy is probably between the worse blocker Ellison vs. Simonson. If Ellison is not going to see significant pt, he will be a value salary cap dump.
Engram is not competing against any of these guys for a roster spot. His exposure comes from the possibility that Shurmur is too stupid to figure out how to use him, and/or we get a draft choice offer this management group cannot refuse.

A good takeaway is that he has fly paper hands, at least in the off season so far.
It's Conrad's blocking that will decide his fate, not his receiving. Â
But for blocking tight ends who are marginal at speed on pass routes, might as well use bigs for that. Maybe not your #1 tight end, but for short yardage and two te sets.
Conrad is the same size as 1st Round pick Noah Fant. Â
A good blocker only slightly bigger than Conrad. And it's not like Conrad couldn't put on 5-7 pounds with ease. Jace Sternberger (4th) is 6-4, 251. Would I have preferred Kahale Warring? Absolutely, but you can't have everything.
Adam Shaheen blows, and he's proving to be injury prone (maybe it wasn't just "a lot of burritos" that helped him to put on 70 pounds in college).
yet in an NFL practice, let alone game. Pretty much agree with all Klaatu wrote above: it's his blocking that will enable him to make the 53 or not. It's that simple. His "fly paper" hands are the bonus that will get him red zone 2 TE set snaps.
But if he's not as advertised as an NFL blocker he won't even make the roster, and will be scratching for a PS spot.
He could be the next Greg Ballard, who IIRC spent a year on the PS and started his next year, playing well and making a few crucial grabs on an SB team. I'd be more than thrilled with that from Conrad.

Klaatu is 100% correct that Conrad's chances of making the team will depend on his blocking ability. While we won't get to see how good he is at blocking until training camp and the preseason we can see on aspect of his game. He has made several good plays as a receiver thus far which was a question mark coming out. He was underutilized in college as a receiver but all the scouting reports state that he was a good blocking TE.
If he truly is a good blocker then he will take Simonson's roster spot because he offers more as a receiver. He won't ever be a pro bowl TE but Conrad could develop into a dependable #2 TE.

but then when i compared measurables they actually scored very close.
here's hoping he's the TE of the giants future.

Exactly. I also think Shurmur likes Ellison more than others.
However, if Conrad plays well and seems like a decent replacement for Ellison; the Giants could save $5M by releasing him in 2020.
But this year? No way.

That said, getting a TE that's a good blocker is what we need in a #2.
Speed, broad jumps, etc. don't matter in that 2 yard radius.

Typically this time of year, as it was will Ellison, even for some with Evan Engram, fans want to see potential in that
I see 6'4" 248. Which seems light for the task, NFL-wise.
Which might be what it takes of you consider how different the edge rush game is in the NFL.
We have players with the weight and a. a on the extended roster right now listed as olb or 3/4 ends.
Or especially not an in line run blocker who creates space or even walls off legit NFL edgers much less DL.
He's a decent blocker in space. E . E is probably decent in space blocker, so are some WRs
And improved at run blocking while having some ability as a receiver, especially within a play action context
