Thats a wrap for minicamp (still more OTAs to come). Shurmur thinks they accomplished a lot this week. I see good, competitive play. Hes also pleased with communication on both sides of the ball.
Shurmur thinks WR Darius Slayton has made huge strides. Hes the first guy that comes to mind when asked about standouts from the rookie class. Slayton had some drops in rookie camp but has smoothed out since then.

A grizzled vet who now has 1 year in this system under his belt. Not thrilled he is missing time but not as concerned as if it was a rookie or someone entirely new to the system.
I know there is only a certain number of OTA's, minicamp, and training camp practices under the new CBA but are there any restrictions in terms of film study? My question is can Daniel Jones spend hours everyday on his free time in the team complex watching film with Shula and/or Shurmur?

When OTAs are over, everyone tends to go on break (the only time of year they really can do that). That doesn't mean the players won't continue to keep studying on their own (playbooks, film, etc.).

I understand that I was just curious if Jones or any other player for that matter can decide to remain at the facility to continue to learn the offense with the coaches or is that restricted under the CBA?

"coaches" that you can work with are the fitness ones.
Any event has to be players only or it can be looked at as illegal.
That's what I assumed but I think players should be allowed to spend their own free time at the teams facility watching film with the coaches if the player so chooses. With the restrictions on the number of practices allowed under the CBA it would be very beneficial to the young players, especially when it involves a new offensive/defensive scheme, to allow them to come in and go over the playbook and watch film with their coaches.
I though I remember seeing they could only be at the facility if they were doing PT
I don't think Jones could go to the facility to watch tape / study with the coaches or on his own.
I believe they can go in workout and watch film without the coaches as often as they want.
Nope, they cant
The rules appear in Article 21, Section 2 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Before the launch of the offseason program, players cant participate in Club-supervised workouts, practices, group, or individual meetings with coaches, group or individual film study with coaches, or group or individual playbook study with coaches . This provision is the origin of periodic comments from coaches regarding their inability to communicate with players in the offseason.

My favorite quote and probably most underrated part of all this...
Ive written this a few different times during spring workouts, but its important to reiterate: the constant energy and competition between the two sides of the ball has been extremely high throughout the spring. There has been yelling back and forth and some trash talk between the two sides, but it is never mean-spirited or nasty, which hasnt always been the case in prior years. Its simply both sides trying to motivate each other. If Ive seen anything that reflects the culture that Dave Gettleman and Pat Shurmur are trying to install with this group, thats it.
Culture has changed drastically. Torre won when he had a group of professionals who were mostly blue collar self motivated players. Not many 40+ hr guys or primary donna types.

I said this. "
I believe they can go in workout and watch film without the coaches as often as they want."
As long as the organization allows players in the facilities (no reason they wouldn't), they can do their own group thing as long as coaches are not present.
It also can't be mandatory, even if the players organize it, which would be really difficult to prove or police, so it really doesn't arise as an issue.
What separates a legal activity from an illegal one outside of the approved schedule is the participation or presence of coaches.
He's the best rookie QB that I've covered on the beat already. I've been impressed by his willingness to push the ball downfield in a practice setting.
I think he might be more focused on accuracy and honing that on out routes vs air. Doesn't put a lot of velocity on those yet

For instance, a coach could not mandate a film session/playbook study activity outside of the mini-camp, but the players could organize it.
Players could organize at a place like Duke for a passing camp with no violations.
It only restricts official activities.
