Stapleton Article on LB Lorenzo Carter

Quote:
He expressed confidence after Wednesday's minicamp practice that the work he put in while training this offseason, including sessions with pass rush specialist Chuck Smith, will get him plenty closer to his ceiling beginning this summer.

“Up front we need an alpha," Carter said, "and I’m looking forward to trying to show I can be that.”

Speed. Bend. Knowledge of the game. Technique. Wing span.

All the tools are there for Carter to be the answer to the Giants' biggest question on the defensive side of the ball.

"Explosiveness and length is a deadly thing," Carter said.

Told that sounds like the makings of a pass rusher, he replied with a smile: "A deadly pass rusher."

Lorenzo Carter wants to be answer to pass rush questions with second year breakout - ( New Window )

Time will tell...

...but I'm expecting a big step forward in 2019 for Lo Carter . He did it at Georgia, and he can do it again in the pros. He had a pretty good rookie season and I think he can build on that!

Go read that article if you still have a problem with the Barwin signing. Whatever the contract amount was (can't remember) it will have been well worth it if Carter takes the second year leap. Our GM has a plan folks.
Love the attitude

If he develops that would be huge for this team

It's a job requirement to do media, and he can't actually do any 'action' until September.
The ingredients are clearly there. All he has to do is put them
Ira : 6/6/2019 9:21 am : link
together and he's been working hard to do that.

There's a difference between confidence and answering media questions directly and honestly ... and carping. I don't see a thing out of order with the way Carter is conducting himself as a 2nd-year guy looking to step into a big role.
If he still has 4.46 speed

I'm not sure how 'too tall' is a weakness if he is used as a zone pass defending LB at times. Call it inside or outside.
Conversely

If they asked him to bulk up to take on o tackles, and if that slowed him, we don't know, not sure how wise that would be.
Or even as a 3rd safety.

Not sure why people see 6'6" and just assume edge function.
I like our edge rushers

Golden, Carter and Ximines sounds fine, if we had Josh Allen at pick 6 then Carter and Ximines wouldn't get a chance to shine

To go by all of the articles in the media and discussions on here, the Giants will have about 10 All Pros and win 15 games, just budding superstars all over the place.

It's tiresome. We'll see what happens when they're doing more than drills in shorts.
There's a ton of opportunity for Zo and X to step up
Heisenberg : 6/6/2019 10:22 am : link
and for Golden to go out and get paid next off-season.

I wouldn't say all pro but our edge rushers are average with high ceiling
Average? Based on what?
Greg from LI : 6/6/2019 10:54 am : link
Golden has one good NFL season that was several years ago, with a bunch of injuries since. Carter flashed a bit last year but looked unimpressive at other times and hasn't proven anything, and Ximenes is a rookie from a small program.

Exactly, should let them play it out this season. If at least 2 ate solid we fine, if only 1 then we pick onevup next off season. All 3 got potientiel so no reason replacing just yet
With them 3 only 2 ganna be o n the field,
NephilimGiants : 6/6/2019 11:01 am : link
why pay 15mill for a 4th guy if we haven't seen their potential yet
What's the problem? You don't want him to sound confident?
Klaatu : 6/6/2019 12:16 pm : link
Sheesh.
4 sacks as a rookie 3rd rounder
justafan : 6/6/2019 12:32 pm : link
is something you can build on.

The funny thing is the Redskins have a 2nd year player(Ryan Anderson) who played basically 100 snaps last year and didn’t prove anything, and a rookie, not from a small program but a rookie none the less(just as unproven as Dexter Lawrence and DeAndre Baker)...and apparently they have the best front 7 since the 2000 Ravens...

It is June, what exactly are you expecting to see in June?
Stapleton, Patti Traina, Dunleavy, and most recently
BlueLou'sBack : 6/10/2019 2:18 am : link
Paul Schwartz in The Post all have written plus/minus the same article on Carter in the past few days.

At Baskin Robbins, that's called the Flavor of the Month. Sometimes it truly is great (nutty coconut) and sometimes it sounds a lot better than it is, like May's Chocolate Ribbon Royal Fudge Mousse - which really couldn't touch either the classic Rocky Road or simply chocolate....

Let's hope Carter turns out to be the next Jamocha Almond Fudge, an all time BR great, and not a flavor that''s forgotten yesterday.

He definitely had moments last year where you see he can do things with raw athleticism... But is he dog enough? To be the Alpha? It's the size of the fight in the dog issue.
Shame on you, BlueLou.
Klaatu : 6/10/2019 6:28 am : link
You left out the one Baskin-Robbins flavor that (hopefully) will come to define Lorenzo Carter:

Quarterback Crunch!

Some of the angst probably stemmed from the $5MM headline number on Barwin's contract. In effect, the Giants paid a total of $2MM for one year at $1.635MM with a fairly cheap option on the second year. While I'm sure they expected more from him for $2MM than a year of on-field coaching, neither Barwin's deal nor Stewart's was the kind of contract anyone should have lost sleep over. It would take a fair number of those to inflict serious cap damage.

Yeah, we'd do well to remember that of the dozens and dozens of promising young"budding stars" we've been optimistic about over the past 10 years or so, very, very few of them have actually improved from one year to the next.

I agree with this, this time of year it is all about fluff articles about how many superstars we have in the making. Come November when they are playing with pads and in real games the conversation usually (not only with Giants but with most teams) is how many duds we have. Lets just see how it all plays out.
