“Big, strong, athletic, smart, playmaker — whenever you can get a guy like that on your roster to provide depth, and having value as a running back. He punches all the tickets,” McGaughey said of Smith. “He’s a hard worker, he’s a pro, and he does everything you ask him to do. He’s 6-3, 235 pounds, and has a skillset. He’s one of those guys if you’re sitting in a room, you won’t even know he’s there. He’s quiet, he comes in, and he works. He does his job.”

Rod Smith eager to prove to Giants he can be more than a one-hit wonder on offense - ( New Window )

Does he have any experiences as a lead blocker?

If he does than Elijhaa Penny could be out of a job
He's the power, punishment, and short yardage

change of pace. WG the shifty threat, hopefully his hands improve and the game slows down for him.

Preserve SB!
Thanks JonC

For the feedback.
His hands? He's got an 80% catch rate. Same as Penny.

With three times as many targets. A lot better than Gallman (69%) or Perkins (68%).

He's played some FB, and last year he was credited with nine special teams tackles (eight solo). Never fumbled in 101 touches.
He still needs to improve so they can use more

of the routes for a RB, including the screen sets.
Don't you have diapers to change?

:)
I see him as competition for Penny.

I don't think they'll keep both - we'll see.
It's going to be a fun training camp battle

between Gallman, Smith, and Perkins. I'm expecting them to keep 3 tailbacks plus Penny at FB. Penny saw a lot of throws out of the backfield during minicamp so the Giants could be getting him a bit more involved this season. Penny can actually carry the ball so he offers more than the other FB's the Giants have carried recently.

Barring injury If I had to guess the depth chart will look like this Barkley, Smith, Gallman.

There is no mention of him as a lead blocker or H-back anywhere, so aside from size data I see no reason to even guess this?

I think he's competing at RB and STs slots vs Gallman, Perkins and Hilliman. Until I read something else ...

From Giantswire:

Quote:
At 6-foot-3, 231 pounds, Smith is a big running back. After going undrafted in 2015, he was signed as a free agent by the Seattle Seahawks, who intended to use him as a fullback. It’s no surprise, given his size, that they would want him in that role. Not only can he carry the ball, but he can block, too. However, he played in just one game for the Seahawks before they cut him, which is when the Cowboys picked him up. The Cowboys used him at his natural running back position.

And his wikipedia page:

Quote:
2016 season
In 2016, Smith was moved to fullback during OTAs, although he did not have the traditional size and body. He competed with converted linebacker Keith Smith for the position and both made the team, although Rod was used only for special teams purposes
So he has been tried at FB and found wanting?

Or the Giants want to try to spin that again?

Happiest day of your life - child born!

2nd happiest day = getting rid of the diaper pail. Believe me no matter what you do, that smell will permeate the house and smack you in the face the minute you open the front door!
