The Texans have fired GM Brian Gaine 1 1/2 years into his five-year contract. An immediate search begins for his replacement. Executive senior VP Chris Olsen is in charge till a replacement is found.
I can easily make the argument that this is the best time of year to do this. An NFL GM's job is year round so when would the best time be? I don't think it is at the end of an NFL season. College is already over. You may not know your staff including the scouts evaluating thesd players or their methods. Better to do it now and get a staff together or at least on the same page before the college season starts.
NFL rosters are maxed out. You are looking more for bottom of the roster guys as opposed to key guys now. You get to use this time to really evaluate everything.

This argument comes up time to time when a GM is let go after the draft.
There are plenty of logical reasons to let the incumbent regime finish the offseason, and let a new regime start without the pressure and lack of preparation.
The pro personnel and scouting work happens during the season, it's hard to just cut that off.

The Bills fired their GM right after the draft a year or so ago. People had the same reaction: THIS IS NUTS, WHY'D YOU LET HIM DRAFT AND THEN FIRE HIM, LOL!!! But you can't put a guy in after the season, when he can't scout the prospects before for the April draft. So they let the old GM do his last draft, let him go and gave the new guy a full year to put in his scouts, scout the college prospects, etc.
Likewise with the Jets. The timing looks bad but really isn't that big a deal. What's worse is the power struggle, especially since it seems that their GM and coach weren't on the same page about free agency, and the GM got his way only to get fired. That looks like a circus.

I get that, but if I think my GM is rotten, I want him gone ASAP. I'd rather have an unprepared new GM than the old one I know is bad go waste another draft.
Even though the Texans wouldn’t comment publicly beyond the statment about their reasons for the decision, people familiar with what transpired said McNair did not like the direction the organization was going under Gaine and the general manager’s relationship with coach Bill O’Brien had eroded. Rather than allow his concerns about Gaine to extend into next season, McNair elected to make the decision Friday, the week before the team’s final offseason minicamp.
Those familiar with the move said there was no one incident that triggered the decision and that it was made over time. McNair determined that Gaine was a better personnel man than a general manager and didn’t want to redefine the job with the Texans. Gaine, who had 3½ years left on the contract he signed in January of 2018, was in charge of everything on the personnel side, including the draft, free agency, medical, training, strength and rehabilitation and nutrition.
Is that I would think that there aren't very many available candidates...
Or at least candidates with experience.
If you are looking to promote somebody into the job, then I guess it doesn't matter.

Agreed, the timing of this combined with his short tenure suggest that something occurred recently.

My guess is PJ is onto something on this one.... of course something ‘racist’ usually gets one a promotion in the McNair family not a pink slip

Their mandatory mini-camp next week should generate some interest...
That would leave him in prime position to lose any sort of power struggle.
