NFT: Chinatown chinese restaurant recommendations

steve in ky : 6/8/2019 12:55 pm
Heading back to NY for a family reunion. Will spend a couple days in the city and one thing my son asked to do was for us to eat at a good restaurant in Chinatown.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I'll thank everyone in advance because thread may get deleted before I could get to post on it again. I'll just check in and read it while traveling.
Wo Hop’s is my go-to

I'm a sucker for Work Hop on Mott St. It's delicious and cheap.
Agree on Wo Hop
Southern Man : 6/8/2019 1:08 pm : link
It's a very good option. I prefer the downstairs Wo Hop.
I'll go a different direction

Order seafood.

That said,; Soup Dumplings +Shanghai style? Are worth the trip, various places have good ones.

(Dumplings with the soup in the inside)
Try Shanghai dumpling 100 mott

Wo Hop's has good food - it's wildly overrated
jcn56 : 6/8/2019 3:54 pm : link
but it's cheap. Be prepared though - calling it a dump is being generous. If you're OK with being below ground in a place that hasn't seen a lick of improvement done to it in 30 years, you'll be fine. If you're the kind of person that expects some ambiance from their dining area (and I am not, if the food is good enough) then you'll be disappointed.

Nom Wah listed above is pretty good as far as traditional goes, and if you want something a little funky (in a good way) check out Kong Sihk Tong.

Wo Hop ...

Old work friend of mine grew up in New York, and was a life long Wo Hop patron. I went in there a few times with him, and he would order a Steak and Onion dish that was off the menu. It was awesome and a favorite of all us from work.
There is another resteraunt near the Wo Hop
Beer Man : 6/8/2019 5:02 pm : link
call the Hop Kee, which is not bad either.
Great Noodletown

On the Bowery about a block or 2 across from the Manhattan bridge. Also Big Wong on Mott St. I don’t get all these Wo Hop recommendations. Wo Hop was good 40 years ago at 3 in the morning after getting stoned at a party.

I love the (New) Big Wong. I would have mentioned it but it’s didn’t think that was what the OP would be looking for. But simple noodles, or, more appropriately, noodle soup it’s the best! The bbq (roast duck, char siu, soy sauce chicken, or siu yuk) is also the best around. Great jook too. It’s our never miss go to place whenever we go to the city.
Wah Kee

I thought Flushing was the new Chinatown

I grew up in Flushing. All the pizza places now have ducks hanging in the windows, I hear.
Sorry

Wo Hop is one

Has to be downstairs.
I guess not really for this thread in terms of not near Chinatown
Matt M. : 6/8/2019 7:20 pm : link
But, for some really excellent and much more authentic northern Chinese food, try Petite Soo Chow in Cliffside Park, NJ, just across the GWB. The soup dumplings are what they are known for, each order made to order. But, everything is great there and a good portion of their menu is not what you would find in typical Chinese restaurants.
Matt, try Soup Dumpling Plus in Fort Lee, much much better than
Jim in Hoboken : 6/8/2019 7:35 pm : link
Petit Soochow. Nan Xiang is closing in Flushing, but SDP has the best soup dumpling in the tri-state region in my opinion.
Flushing

Remember Gloria pizza?
I usedto love that place
Wo Hop is an oldschool chop suey type place as I recall

Haven't been in a while but most of it's clientele was drunk NYU students.

Personally I like NY Noodletown but I wouldn't call it a nice restaurant. Joe's Shanghai is probably more like what you're looking for.
I’d go to Jin Fong or Golden Unicorn for dim sum, unless you are from
Jim in Hoboken : 6/8/2019 8:03 pm : link
SF or Vancouver that’s as Chinese as you can get. Aside from Dim Sum, we only go to Oriental Garden for Cantonese seafood if Flushing is too far. Congee Village on the outskirts of Chinatown usually gets some votes when Chinese food comes up.

Have to know what to order though, if you want just wonton soup and beef and broccoli, then most eateries in Chinatown would suffice.
Chinatown

Ping's is quite good with a seafood emphasis. A newer place with particularly good sesame noodles and Peking duck is Hwa Yuan Szechuan Inn on East Broadway. The chef/owner is the son of Shorty Tang who had a restaurant of the same name on the same site forty years ago and is believed to have originated sesame noodles in the US.

I actually knew a girl in college named Anita Wang, so...point taken.
My impression of Chinatowns is got to Manhattan for Cantonese
Bill L : 6/8/2019 9:50 pm : link
And go to Flushing for non-Cantonese.

I love Wo Hop bit this is spot on. Wo Hop is just a glorified version of American Chinese food, it is greasy and just a better version of what you can get in any suburb in any tri-state area location. If you are looking for a more authentic experience I agree with Joe Shanghai and there is this place Joe's Ginger which is also a better option. This is not to undersell Wo Hop, it definitely has its virtues, but there are some limitations as well.
