Huh? If OTs didn't regularly use their hands to block LT (and they did, without being called for holding far too often) LT would have posted 60 sacks in a single season.
When Parcels drafted Jumbo Elliot, and people questioned if Elliot had the footspeed and agility to play OLT, Parcels countered "once [Jumbo] gets his hands on a defender, it's all over.
Marty I don't recall a huge specific change in the OL rules regarding hand usage, and in practice I agree OL are allowed to do it now more than ever, but there was lots of hand use (inside the shoulder pads) going on in the '80s. Lots. Hernandez would have been a very fine OL in any era.

and perhaps even racist in a way, but in Southern California at least and with a number of Hispanic men I've gotten to know, there is a definite culture of macho that feeds well into the mentality of playing on the OL.

He's also playing to keep the lights on for his family. DG "lucked" out getting SB and him to rebuild a franchise around, a tremendous opprtunity.

For some draftniks, that was quite a surprise, aside from being a lucky boon for DG and the Giants who, IIRC, swooped in pretty quickly to nab Hernandez.
Right up until last week (still crazy early I know) there are some questions about the wisdom of grabbing Corbett at 33 instead of Hernandez. Especially since trading Zeitler to the Giants left a hole at ORG that Corbett was supposed to fill....

Quenton Nelson, the Colts' All Pro & pro Bowl rookie OG last year, drafted 6th overall, committed 11 penalties if you include the declined and offset ones. Fun facts.

I like Baldinger I just don’t get the idea of the proud bowl being a good read. I recall wanting Scherff and Martin badly. Especially as aged and the line got worse and worse. And while DG khans made somebody mistakes but even above Average is a huge jump from what was. drafted or brought in during The Reese era. Just hope DG invests even more picks next year. We need a post Solder and Zeitler plan.

Hernandez's attitude - and it's not the least bit a "show" for the kid from what I can glean form his words and tone and the differential respect he shows Zeitler and Diehl - is gonna help him achieve greatness in the NFL IMO.
His best lines were (paraphrasing) "The OL is like a work of art - it's 5 different gears that need to all turn in the same direction at the exact same time in perfect cohesion to make a play work... Sure you can have the strength and speed and quickness, but that all means nothing without technique. Playing OL is all about perfecting your technique, in unison with the players around you..."
This kid has the seriousness of a trained assassin.
He also loves Shurmur: how Shurmur is extremely demanding of his OL, and how Shurmur knows what he wants from them, and how he stays on them and can't be fooled about whether or not they are doing their jobs correctly.
