Baldy Breakdowns: Will Hernandez Analysis

Canton : 6/9/2019 6:58 am

Says he has everything it takes to be a Pro Bowl LG.

Quote:
@Giants @willhernandez76 played all 1027 offensive snaps last year and improved all along the way. He has everything it takes to be a “pro-bowl” LG. Can’t wait to see the leap he makes this year with 16 starts under his belt.

played. The rules were very restrictive and were only changed to help the offense score more points. You couldn't use your hands at all. Using those rules in today's NFL, every lineman would have been called for holding on every play.

Huh? If OTs didn't regularly use their hands to block LT (and they did, without being called for holding far too often) LT would have posted 60 sacks in a single season.

When Parcels drafted Jumbo Elliot, and people questioned if Elliot had the footspeed and agility to play OLT, Parcels countered "once [Jumbo] gets his hands on a defender, it's all over.

Marty I don't recall a huge specific change in the OL rules regarding hand usage, and in practice I agree OL are allowed to do it now more than ever, but there was lots of hand use (inside the shoulder pads) going on in the '80s. Lots. Hernandez would have been a very fine OL in any era.
I hate to say this because it sounds like a sweeping generalization

and perhaps even racist in a way, but in Southern California at least and with a number of Hispanic men I've gotten to know, there is a definite culture of macho that feeds well into the mentality of playing on the OL.

There's a short video bio of Hernandez (I'll link it if I find it easily) titled "Orgullo" which translates to "Pride", but could also easily fit "Macho."

Here it is... it's a fine bio piece.

Will H. is as anti the Teddy Bear of James Brewer as you can get. I more and more get the feeling that DG has a good sense of the personalities it takes to play well in the trenches, when Reese and Ross had like zero clue about that. We'll get a better idea with the development of Dexter Lawrence I think, because the tools are there in the kid beyond "Spades". His ceiling is limited only by his own attitude and "want to".

He's also playing to keep the lights on for his family. DG "lucked" out getting SB and him to rebuild a franchise around, a tremendous opprtunity.

Maybe, but that would be way off IMO. I looking at some portrait photos, and to compare both of them to other famous faces:

The young Anthony Munoz looks a bit like Omar Sharif, while

Will Hernandez could almost pass for a young Eli Wallach...

I just said I thought that was what he was alluding, too.

You don't have to sell me on Hernandez. I wrote this about him in a thread I began on April 17 (where I linked the same video you did above):

Quote:
In 2017, Justin Pugh, John Jerry, and Brett Jones all played Left Guard for the Giants. In 2018, none of those three were on the team, and that "committee" was replaced by rookie Will Hernandez. He got off to a shaky start, but by the end of the 2018 season he was showing exactly why the Giants drafted him in the 2nd Round that year.

Yeah this is spot on. I recall Coach Dorgan here criticizing John Jerry for having feet (or footwork) that made him look as if he were playing in quicksand or mud or something like that. Hernandez is very "light on his feet" while still having a full man sized anchor and a very decent punch.

Best of all his work ethic and attitude - Orgullo.

their hands. They were easy to get, so they never kept track of them. Just at the time that LT came into the League, they changed the holding rules and made it harder to get a sack. Because they were harder to get, they started keeping track of sacks.

They probably changed the holding rules in order to protect expensive QBs from getting killed by bigger, faster, (roided?) defensive players.

I think Hernandez is terrific. My only point is let's not send him to Canton just yet. However, since the comparison was a facial resemblance rather than blocking performance, both our posts are kinda moot.

ProBowl is no true measure of greatness. All Pro now we can talk. Either way he looks like more than an above average starter. Something they haven’t drafted since Snee?
Maybe DG traded OBJ to the Browns as a
BlueLou'sBack : 6/9/2019 4:59 pm : link
to his pal Dorsey for passing on Hernandez at 33, taking Austin Corbett, an OT from Nevada, instead.

For some draftniks, that was quite a surprise, aside from being a lucky boon for DG and the Giants who, IIRC, swooped in pretty quickly to nab Hernandez.

Right up until last week (still crazy early I know) there are some questions about the wisdom of grabbing Corbett at 33 instead of Hernandez. Especially since trading Zeitler to the Giants left a hole at ORG that Corbett was supposed to fill....

From Fansided (linked below)

The Cleveland Browns traded Kevin Zeitler with the intention of Austin Corbett taking over at right guard, but so far in OTAs he hasn’t cracked the first team
With the third week of OTAs underway, things are starting to get interesting for the Cleveland Browns offensive line. ... all eyes are on what happens at right guard.

That’s where Austin Corbett is supposed to be taking over as the No. 33 overall pick’s presence made them willing to trade Kevin Zeitler... the front office [however]... said he wouldn’t be handed anything.

...Corbett has yet to solidify the starting spot... he’s still on the second team working at center behind J.C. Tretter.

“Thursday’s practice, the ninth of 10 OTAs, featured more of Kyle Kalis working with the first team at right guard while Corbett led the second-team group at center.” ...
Kyle Kalis, originally an undrafted free agent last season with the Washington Redskins, joined the Browns in September of 2018... His ascension over Corbett has to be frustrating for the team even if they won’t come out an admit it. Cleveland took the former Nevada offensive tackle despite the talented Will Hernandez still on the board.

Not wishing bad for the Browns, but it's nice to read something that infers the Giants may have benefited from another team's draft faux pas. Nice and refreshingly different.

BTW, as a rookie starting all 16 games Hernandez committed only 2 penalties all year: one holding and one false start.
Counting penalties that were declined or offset, Ereck Flowers, in 15 starts his rookie year, committed 9 penalties. In his second year, Flowers committed 13...

Quenton Nelson, the Colts' All Pro & pro Bowl rookie OG last year, drafted 6th overall, committed 11 penalties if you include the declined and offset ones. Fun facts.

Pro Bowl was Baldinger's barometer, not mine. I just pointed out that there were several Pro Bowl-worthy Guards in the NFC. If Hernandez can be play to the same level as guys like Zach Martin, Brandon Brooks, Brandon Scherff, and Trai Turner, so much the better for us.

I like Baldinger I just don’t get the idea of the proud bowl being a good read. I recall wanting Scherff and Martin badly. Especially as aged and the line got worse and worse. And while DG khans made somebody mistakes but even above Average is a huge jump from what was. drafted or brought in during The Reese era. Just hope DG invests even more picks next year. We need a post Solder and Zeitler plan.
We might need a Center, too.
Klaatu : 6/9/2019 5:49 pm : link
The guys I mentioned above all made the Pro Bowl in 2018 (and Zach Martin made All-Pro...again), and while it's become something of a popularity contest, I don't think we'd mind having any of those guys on the Giants. Note: Kevin Zeitler never made the Pro Bowl (or All-Pro), but he's still far and away the best RG we've had since Chris Snee retired.

Since we'll be picking 32nd, we'll need some luck for Tyler Biadasz to fall to us there.

Although, you know, DG has been known to trade up for his guy.

Yesterday I re-listened to Hernandez and Zeitler's chat with
BlueLou'sBack : 6/11/2019 9:30 am : link
Diehl on The Huddle Podcast over at Giants.com.

Hernandez's attitude - and it's not the least bit a "show" for the kid from what I can glean form his words and tone and the differential respect he shows Zeitler and Diehl - is gonna help him achieve greatness in the NFL IMO.

His best lines were (paraphrasing) "The OL is like a work of art - it's 5 different gears that need to all turn in the same direction at the exact same time in perfect cohesion to make a play work... Sure you can have the strength and speed and quickness, but that all means nothing without technique. Playing OL is all about perfecting your technique, in unison with the players around you..."

This kid has the seriousness of a trained assassin.

He also loves Shurmur: how Shurmur is extremely demanding of his OL, and how Shurmur knows what he wants from them, and how he stays on them and can't be fooled about whether or not they are doing their jobs correctly.

Man I'm fumbling my diction today, it's 6:30 AM out here on the left coast...
