Chance Adams has been pitching well. And German was probably going to be shut down some time soon anyway so I don't see how this changes anything.
Because German probably had enough innings left to bridge the gap until Severino and Montgomery return.
However, he could probably use a break.
Was not a big Keuchel fan either, but at least he was a fairly reliable pro.
Imo, Kuechel would have been an expensive innings eater. There were positives. Don't get me wrong. I just think we can do better than him or at least similar with a guy like Chance Adams.
Give German a couple of weeks to heal up. He has an innings limit anyway. Next man up. Give Chance Adams or Nestor Cortes the shot. When Andujar went down it was "Whaaaa we should have signed Machado!". Urshela stepped up. When Judge and Stanton and Hicks went down it was "Whaaa we should have signed Harper!". Frazier, Maybin and even Tauchman stepped up. When Severino went down it was "Whaaa we should have signed Corbin!". German stepped up. Injuries suck, but the team has done a great job navigating them. It's early June...Next man up.

Pretty much my take on it. I would've taken Kuechel because it would've only been money but not losing sleep over it.
I really wanted Bumgarner or Sherzer even if they mean giving up some prospects because I think either could be just the guy to get us over the top.
I want a #1 pitcher and Kuechel isn't that IMO. It sucks shutting German down for ten days but it was gonna happen sooner or later anyway. Bring us chance and keep the train rolling.

Chance Adams is not the answer either. He is most likely
a reliever in the future. In fact, he was a reliever in the minors, the Yanks turned him into a starter.
He might be able to give them a couple starts if they are
desperate. If I was the Yanks, I wouldn't wait until late July to find another starter. This is a brittle rotation unfortunately.
Betances experience soreness in his throwing shoulder while throwing this week and is being sent back to NY for medical test BR - Yankees - ( New Window )

This isn't right at all.
He was a COLLEGE reliever- and for only 2 years at that. When he signed, the Yanks had him in the pen because you can't shift a guy's role mid-season- pitched in 14 games in relief after being drafted. However, he has been a SP ever since- he has started 82 of his subsequent 87 appearances.
Adams is also a guy who was 13-1 in 2016 and 15-5 in 2017. He has surgery to remove elbow spurs in the 2017 off-season and was not right in 2018. He lost significant velo in 2018- he had been working in the mid-90's before that and was down in the low 90s/high 80s after the surgery.
He has regained much of the velo and command- and recent outings have demonstrated the improvement- he has given up 3 runs in his last 5 starts- going for 6+ IP in each start.
Adams is not a guy to sleep on. However, he will not get the call right away- his last start was on the 5th- while German started on Saturday, the 8th. I also think that the Yanks want to get Adams more starts to prep for any potential longer term injury.
German isn't likely to miss more than 2-3 starts, and might not miss more than 10 days, depending how he responds to treatment. Why mess with Adams routine if he's only going to get a call up and likely get sent right back down. Cortes is in NY and can handle that role if its short term.
But we do have Morales to keep racking up Ks in unproductive at bats.
