NFT: We covered suits - where do you guys buy your ties?

jcn56 : 6/10/2019 9:15 am
I'm set for suits but oddly enough I've probably bought more suits in the past few years than I've bought ties, and it shows.

My problem is either the ties I'm finding are too farty or they're poorly made. Not looking to spend a bundle, but I don't mind paying if I get a year or two out of them (and I'm an occasional wearer at best).
Off Saks
tbonfig : 6/10/2019 9:20 am : link
has some very reasonable and high quality ties.
ties I'm less picky about
pjcas18 : 6/10/2019 9:25 am : link
and for work my ties days are dwindling. I have one customer in NYC where I still where a tie. And old financial service/insurance company.

Nowhere else do I wear a tie except in extreme circumstances, sometimes even no tie for first meetings anymore.

So it's basically rare work event, wedding, funeral.

I go to Macy's or I'll pick some up when Brooks Brothers has their sale.
Macy's

Good prices and they have a large selection.
Same place I buy my shirts

Charles Tyrwhitt - quality is solid enough and when they have sales you can get them in the 20ish dollar range.

Their shirts are also great. If you google "3 for $99" you can always get a deal on their non-irons.
Second for Charles Tyrwhitt...

Great quality, but unless there's a good sale, very expensive. One issue with their ties... the few I've gotten are all short when you use a Windsor knot.
Brooks Brothers of course
gtt350 : 6/10/2019 10:04 am : link
also Paul Stuarts has great ties. Don't be cheap
a four in hand and half Windsor are the preferred knots

these days, a full windsor is a bit much even with a wide collar.
Also learn to tie a bowtie never use a clipon for Formalwear
jcn. Don't focus on where you buy, but whether the tie

goes with your suit and shirt.

A five dollar tie that provides a pleasant accent to your solid colored shirt and dark suit is way better than an expensive tie that clashes with what you are wearing. You wouldn't wear red sneakers with your suit, even if they were really expensive sneakers. (Well, maybe if you were attending the Academy Awards presentation ;-))

For example, if you wear primarily blue suits and solid shirts, then a multi-colored tie that has some blue in it and perhaps the color of your shirt is what you should be shopping for.

The rule of thumb for suits: two solids and an accent.

A $5 tie? you got to be kidding
gtt350 : 6/10/2019 10:21 am : link
also never match a pocket square to your tie it looks ridiculous.
A four point white Irish linen handkerchief is the move
Marty, I've never been exactly fashionable

I figure someplace that has a good selection would make the matter a little more foolproof.

I'm also in the same boat as pjcas - I wear suits more frequently than I do ties, so I'm basically limited to about 10 times a year where I actually need one. I'm not going to run out and break the bank, and the ties I have now are perfectly 'acceptable' (run of the mill striped, solid or dotted ties of different shades). Figured I'd try to add a couple that are a little more stylish if possible.
The Tie Bar

is a solid website, all ties $19 bucks. ($5 bucks to ship though).

They just opened a retail location on Madison between 47th and 48th I believe. Solid selection, and if they don't have the tie you want in store, they'll ship it your house / store for free.

Massive selection, good quality and relatively cheap. Picked up 6 ties for $120 about a month ago.
I wear bowties more than neckties

And I don't like the fake ones. That almost always means buying online. I have found some beautiful ties at ETSY.
I've got a suit and tie

they can bury me in. Otherwise, I'm out of the market
I don't know how you can buy ties on line
gidiefor : Mod : 6/11/2019 3:01 pm : link
a tie has to grab me visually and texturally and you really can't see the color or feel it -- whether it's the proper length or it fits --

all kinds of good stuff that can only happen in person

my most satisfactory tie experiences have been at Nordstrom's - but they are not cheap

there ties last a long time -- I've kept some of them for over 20 years and they still look great -- unless you get spaghetti sauce on them

So not the same as studded collars and handcuffs.
