the real story here is just how few good offensive linemen there are in the league

think about how strong that makes Gettleman's moves:
- signing Solder
- drafting Hernandez,
- trading for Zeitler
- and bringing in a RT that Shurmur's worked with successfully before

Some of you complain about the signing of Solder and Remmer -- and even knock Zeitler --

but given what's out there -- and that teams are still signing the Jerry's and Hart's out there - imo -- these were solid signings
Good point, gidie.

When you get to the bottom of the barrel, teams have two options: trash and trash with starting experience. It's why guys like Hart, Flowers, Jerry will get jobs.

Clint Boling is a very solid OG, similar to Zeitler if healthy.

You basically have to be a unicorn to be a shut down LT, the market forces us to overpay for a good above average LT like Solder. It's either him or a black hole at LT.

The problem is the correct answer to that dilemma is "young unproven trash". Because you know there's a 0% chance Jerry and Hart will give you anything, but there's a slim chance (better than 0%) that the young unproven trash might prove to be effective.

Chances are Jerry won't make the team. Cordy Glenn has been moved to LG to make room for Jonah Williams. They also re-signed Clint Boling and signed FA G John Miller to a 3 year 16.5 million dollar contract. The chances of him making the team are extremely slim especially since he can't play center or tackle. It's the Bengals though so he will probably end up starting at RG.

Been thinking this for years. The next evolution in football schemes and athletes will have to do w lineman.

Starting to wonder if you will begin to see smaller lineman similar to the pre 1980s become a thing.

People seem to forget last year we had Omaneh, Flowers, Brown and Wheeler on our line. For 3 of those 4 it's a legitimate question whether they belong in the league at all. Yet, we have posters who question if we're improved on the OL with Zeitler and Remmers!

comments like "they're make Halipio earn it by beating out Pulley"? They both sucked last year. Hernandez showed some promise, but had issues. Remember the rookie season Petrus had? He got playing time late in the season during the SB46 run and then dropped of the table for some reason.

The Giants basically have the same line as last year, with Ziegler over Brown, which should be better for pass blocking, but maybe worse in terms of run blocking. And they lost their best pass pusher in order to get him.

Remmers is a big unknown right now. Maybe these guys stay healthy and gel, but making pronouncements that this line is much improved doesn't wash yet.

According to PFF pio was the 2nd rated pass blocking center in the NFL in his 2 games played last year.

You're comparing Will Hernandez to Mitch Petrus? That's laughable. Besides the fact that Petrus's rookie season was 2010 (eleven games, no starts), not 2011, the only reason he got any playing time at all in 2011 (six games, three starts - his only starts in three years with the Giants), is because the injuries to Will Beatty and David Baas forced the Giants to reshuffle their O-Line a few times (and losing Stacy Andrews didn't help, either). After three years, the Giants couldn't wait to get rid of Petrus.

Hernandez started every game in his rookie year, which shouldn't be that much of surprise, since unlike Petrus, a 5th Round pick (#147), Hernandez was a 2nd Rounder (#34). For all of his "issues," he did make the PFWA All-Rookie Team, and deservedly so.

Yeah, well, except for their RG and in all probability their RT, too. Care to explain why the O-Line might be "maybe worse in terms of run blocking?" That makes no sense, but I'll assume you're alluding to the fact that Zeitler is considered a better pass-blocker than run-blocker. Well, he is, but that doesn't mean he isn't a good run-blocker, too. It's not like he can do one but not the other. As for losing our best pass-rusher to get him, that's not saying much. I don't think it will be that difficult to replace the production of "Mr. Almost Got There."

Quote:

That's true, Remmers is a big unknown, but only because of his health. We do know that when he's played RT, he's played it well. I do want to see who wins the battle for the starting Center job, even though both candidates are less than ideal (and that's being generous) because I want to see the starting five healthy and practicing together. I also want to see who their backups will be, because the odds are we'll need one or two of them at some point this year.

Now, while I'm also loathe to make pronouncements about whether or not the O-Line has been improved - and I won't until the pads come on the hitting starts - clearly, the change of personnel on the right side should help, and so should the fact that Solder and Hernandez on the left side have a year's worth of playing next to each other. A case can be made that those two factors alone signal an improved O-Line. I won't make it, but I won't criticize those who do, either.
LOL..
FatMan in Charlotte : 6/11/2019 9:51 am : link
We basically have the same line as last year with likely a different Center and entire right side.

Makes perfect sense!!
