PRELIMINARY UPDATE: There was a helicopter hard landing on the roof of 787 7th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. Fire has been extinguished. Please continue to avoid the area.
Do you ride in cars? Way, way, way more dangerous.
Stats dont replace fear. Stats also dictate averages. If you are a great, and confident driver than its safe. Putting my life in someone elses hands flying is always more dangerous to me regardless of what stats say.

I'm not even really referring to stats. I'm just commenting based on my own anecdotal experiences of commuting into NYC from north Jersey.
Something that really "scares the hell out of me" is when I sit in the window seat of my commuter bus on a highway and watch how 1 in every 4 drivers in the next lane over is looking at a phone while cruising at 40 MPH or above.
I was more likely to be killed crossing fifth avenue than dying in a skydiving accident.
I skydived once just to experience it. I rode on a helicopter once just to experience that.
I agree that all it takes it being unlucky at the unluckiest time. But I do see where you are involved with the most people at anyplace at anytime, your chances for injury or death would increase.
I have flown and flown in many in less than favorable conditions and still work on them daily. They are safe. Most incidents are pilot error although one pilot I flew with described flying one as a controlled crash as helicopters do not inherently fly themselves like planes.

great skiers where helmets because of the other people on the mountain... plenty of dopes on the road too.
Wow, I used to work in that building back in the early 90's

Plaid, when they said midtown, I was thinking, what are the odds it's Plaid's building. Fortunately, I know you don't work on 7th Avenue anymore. Still pretty freaky that it, in fact, was your old building.
Years ago, I caught a flight on single engine plane

For all our safety improvements, driving is still far more dangerous than any other form of travel.

Helicopters, small planes...no go for me. To each their own.
