Nate Burleson:Dwayne Haskins is a better QB than Eli

NYBEN1963 : 6/10/2019 5:46 pm
First off let me say I really like Nate Burleson I think he is really good at his job as an analyst, usually very smart with well thought out comments. But this is the stupidest thing i have EVER heard in over 40 years of following football and it isn't even close.I know alot of these shows thrive on saying outlandish shit just to get people talking during the off season but this is beyond idiotic. His credibility took a big hit in my eyes after this non-sense

This guy actually gets paid for his “analysis”; wow.
This is irresponsible journalism

Haskins hasn't ever played a down the the NFL, Eli is a SB MVP. How the hell does NB know if Haskins will even be average, let alone good. I am so sick of journalism in all fields, going after clicks rather than facts.

Well to be fair Burleson isn't a journalist. It's a sports entertainment/pop culture show. They're paid for their opinions. And lots of times theirs directed to have opposing opinions. It's designed to do exactly what it's doing: get people to watch and have a reaction.

and NFL players. People can argue how good Eli has been over the years and it’s normally on the difference between a HOF player or a fringe HOF player. On either side, that amounts to a pretty damn good NFL player and franchise QB. Certainly a tough SOB which you’d think people would admire. By all accounts, Eli has been an ambassador for the game, two time SB winner and SB MVP, and quite successful. What is it about Eli that rubs people the wrong way? Is it just NY bias?

There's little to no risk in it.

It will be well received bc the majority of fans don't like him, or at least don't mind seeing him get slammed. Maybe it's the draft day thing, maybe it's a Manning family thing, maybe it's a NY bias thing, maybe it's the mannerisms and goofy faces. Probably depends on the fan but between those 4 boxes there's probably a lot of dislike, or at least like seeing him get busted on.

The other part of the equation is that Eli will never respond. He'll always take the high road. It's one of the reasons we love the guy. It also makes him an easy target for a quick joke. While a hot head who goes off the handle at being criticized may get even more attention, I don't think most media types want that baggage. Much easier to pull a hit and run on an easy target.

This isn't a shocking statement. Eli doesn't have a rocket for an arm. Never did.

Kerry Collins had a better arm than Eli.

This isn't about a rocket arm. It's about a guy who hasn't played in a single NFL game (even an exhibition game) and wasn't a can't-miss prospect to begin with being declared already better than Eli Manning.

I haven't started a thread on it, but Chris Simms has been doing a Top 40 QBs for the coming season - revealing 2 each day. Of course, Eli barely makes the list, but Haskins and others who have never taken a snap in the NFL are higher. It is such a horse-shit take. I don't have a problem with an analyst rating starting QBs, but at least restrict the criteria to actual starting QBs not players who are #2 on the depth chart. In Simms case, he is doing a Top 40 so the QB2's have a place in what should logically be after the starters. But logic has no use when making these lists.

Yeah, Simms top 40 is a load of bullshit. I have no problem with him ranking Eli low, but ranking him #34 out of 32 teams is a strech. Remember, this as also the same show that had Charean Williams, and Mike Florio absolutely gushing with praise for the Redskins O-Line, without ever mentioning Ereck Flowers, and the injury concerns they have with Trent Williams.
You,,
FatMan in Charlotte : 6/10/2019 7:33 pm : link
shit on my house, Eli!!!

The discussion actually wasn't bad, but Burleson is essentially saying
regulator : 6/10/2019 7:40 pm : link
quarterback = strong arm/athleticism. Emphasizing the term *quarterback* seems misplaced and mistaken given that most would agree there's far more to playing the position than physical gifts... so to say that after six weeks of being a professional athlete, never having suited up, much less taken a live professional snap, that Dwayne Haskins is a better *quarterback* than Eli Manning is pretty laughable.

At this point, is Haskins more athletic? Is he a better thrower of the football? Does he move around better? All of the above may be, and probably are, true. But to say he's a better *quarterback*, emphasizing a term that connotes the complete package of an NFL signal-caller beyond the measurable physical traits, is a big misnomer.

There seems to have been resentment towards Eli in this league
joeinpa : 6/10/2019 7:57 pm : link
Since he got drafted.

I think his two Super Bowl runs gave him a status that many players don’t believe he deserves.

Mostly I think they resent the money he has made, the fame of his name, and the Giants loyalty to him. I believe it is the latter which skews their view of Giants management, including the Beckham trade.

As to the claim Haskins is a better quarterback, we shall see. There would have been the same outrage had he said the same thing about Mayfield at this juncture last season.

Maybe most here believe Eli is a better quarterback than Mayfield still, but that sentiment would get a lot of push back around the league

Eli gets killed because he's been consistently inconsistent
Zeke's Alibi : 6/10/2019 8:20 pm : link
throughout his career. A top 12 QB for the majority of a career that if there was some more consistency in his game could have been an elite QB. One thing about Eli is that he shows up in the 4th quarters and the playoffs and a lot of the players that don't watch him week in week out probably find it confounding that he is a two time super bowl mvp. They watch a QB in film that makes some really questionable throws for three quarters than inexplicably turns it on in the 4th quarter. Hopefully DJ has a career at least like ELi's because as Giants fans we knew with Eli we could always win the game if it was close in the 4th. That is all I really want from my QB. I mean it would have been great to draft an elite QB, but those guys are few and far between.

As far as NB's comments, I think NB just thinks Eli is toast. And his comments kind of alluded to that about his arm. There is no way a former professional football player would say any rookie is better than an established vet unless he thought that vet was cooked.

Right, obviously biased opinions. It's not really a secret or anything. Someone earlier bemoaned the state of "sports journalism". This isn't sports journalism. That's become a niche market and exists in small, last bastion strongholds like The Athletic. Legit journalism still exists, much like good movies are new music. Just have to be willing to look for it.

Beer Man : 6/11/2019 7:50 am : link
given that Mr. Haskins has not even taken his first NFL snap; not to mention reports have been that he has had a rough start in the off-season program. Maybe one day, Redskins fans will be able to look back and see multiple SBs, pro-bowls, MVPs, etc., and then they can make that statement. But to make a statement like that at this point in Haskins career is just dumb.

Ummm. Nate has his head up his a**. Haskins is getting outplayed by Case Keenum so far. DH will hold the clipboard until the Redskins are eliminated from the playoffs.

That said, I'd say Eli is the 3rd best QB in the division, behind Wentz and Dak (who is better than we think he is).

I like our QB situation. Is it the best in the division, probably not...unless DJ becomes a franchise QB.

Eli Manning is likely in his last season with the Giants, I'm hoping he delivers one more magical run to the post-season. He appears to be in good shape and ready to give it a shot. His arm isn't what it was. But, he's a pro, I'm glad we have him as the starter.

I was upset when we drafted Jones at #6 (and missed Allen) on draft night, like alot of us. He appears to have his priorities right during mini-camp and the OTA's. He has a better arm that I thought and has some nice mobility. He has said and done all the right things.

Rooting hard for him, but the kid has yet to take a snap facing a defense with pads on, let alone in a live NFL pre-season game. That's his next test. Imagine the insanity on this board if he throws 3 picks in his first pre-season game (which he should start BTW).

DJ's developing, which is great. The jury is out. However, his first impression has been dynamite.

Fingers crossed.

At one point, Larry Holmes was a better boxer than Ali. Doesn't mean in the entirety of ones career, they were better.

Eli is getting old. For me, I want to see him going out with his head high, with some nice wins under his belt this year. But like taxes and death, age does not discriminate.

The difference between guys like Haskins and Eli, is Eli can look back and say, in the toughest of times, against the best competition, in a window of time, I was on top of the world. Twice! Until Haskins wins two Super Bowl MVP's and carries a team to glory, it's all noise.
Regardless of what you think of Eli
Mike from Ohio : 6/11/2019 12:22 pm : link
There is no basis at all for suggesting Dwayne Haskins is better than any NFL quarterback. He may very well be, but the guy hasn't taken a snap in the NFL. He could turn into Dan Marino or Ryan Leaf. Nobody knows.

To say at this point in his career who Haskins is already better than is simply emotional stupidity.
And I think Daniel Jones
