We knew this game was going to be a rout but this is great!!

It is pretty much the equivalent of an american football team beating Germany 127-0. Most other countries barely have any organized woman's sports. The talent pool from Women's soccer comes from like 10 countries tops. Fucking North Korea is ranked 10th in the world.

For better or worse, this is the case. Finishing #1 in your group may be based on goal differential and the other teams aren't going to play nice. The order of finishing could make a big difference in how the tournament proceeds in the knockout stages. Sucks but that's how it is.

I hear you, but the women can not play that way because they can; the competition at the men’s level makes it much harder to hold and pass because the level of athletic ability is uniformly higher and defense attorney s better. We’re spoiled by watching teams like Spain - they make it look easy, but in reality only a fraction of 1% can hold and pass consistently w/out turning it over.
All that being said, screw that tickytacky crap anyway, it’s too boring to watch.

Yeah that was my initial thought too but this is the ultimate for these women. If someone scored or setup their first WC goal, I understand them wanting to celebrate that.

Don't know who scored all the goals or what order they were scored in as far as if someone got their first goal early or later on. Hopefully if wasn't their top scorers doing the scoring and big celebrating late.

Sending a message and the message is this, we came to win!

I was wondering if any soccer fans (which apparently excludes most of BBI) could answer this question: are the ten greatest American soccer players in the history of US soccer all women? Obviously not asking if a male player could beat a female player, but clearly if you look at the greatest female soccer players ever there’s plenty to pick from and most would be American (I think). But for the men, has the US even produced a great male player?

Anyway, good job USWNT!
the US has produced some world class male players -
Del Shofner : 6/11/2019 11:23 pm : link
Tab Ramos, Claudio Reyna, Landon Donovan, also GKs like Brad Friedel and Tim Howard who were longstanding stars in the EPL. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting right now. Now, if you were going to say top 10 in the history of the sport on the male side, probably not. Whereas the women would have maybe half of the top 10 in the history of the sport on the female side.

I didn't see today's game in real time as I was out of town but on the plane ride back I caught the last 20 minutes where it went from 7-0 (a rout but manageable) to 13-0. Frankly, the Thai defenders and their GK, who is not good to begin with, just packed it in and stopped playing seriously with 20 minutes to go. I don't blame the US players for scoring - they took what they were given and goal differential is not to be overlooked in group play. That said, I agree that the celebrations on the later goals were more than what I might have expected.
If anyone was unprofessional
ron mexico : 6/12/2019 7:07 am : link
It was Thailand. They held them to three goals in the first half and straight up quit in the 2nd.

celebrating was low brow.

But the criticism they are getting is because the rest of the world hates seeing that team succeed.

I found it quite ironic when I was with some Brazilian and German colleagues that one of their complaints about our women's team is the amount of lesbians on it. I told them to look in the mirror at their own teams - it is just the nature of women's sports.

The Brazilian took particular offense and said "Why are we discussing women's football anyway. Let's talk about the Men. This should keep the American quiet."

Thailand had every opportunity to not field a team. But once you get to that stage, you give it your all, no matter who your opponent is and no matter the circumstance. Also, and it's not trivial, all of the other teams in the group will play Thailand, so the score differential is going to end up being a game in and of itself. It matters. And wrt celebrations, again, it's the World Cup. Nobody should be sad or even low key about scoring; it's the measure of success and it's (I suppose pun intended) the goal of the being there.

It takes emotion to practice and play all year in a sport you are dedicated to winning. Its their careers and the bubble they are in. Expecting stone faces in a WC game? Do you want passion or false self control?

I guess we on BBI are the best ones to judge that because we always keep our class despite the pressure and stress in the 24/7/365 ultra competitive world of sports posting.

Its under pressure of a kind because like it or not those women and the USWNT and the US soccer federation and many other nations want emerging growth of the sport for girls elsewhere in the world. Fox is expected to make over $30M in profits from televising this WC. Worldwide TV viewership for the womens WC is expected to be 1Billion.

This generation of our USWNT learned from their predecessor generation that 3000 people per game attended their WC in 1995

So coming through is a passionate goal. Those women get literally millions of emails and social media responses from American girls. There are studies that over 1 million girls play organized soccer in the USA. The percentage growth in poorer countries ( soccer does not take much money to play) is even more rapid.

So like it or not, the people on the team likely feel enormous pressure to come through for their fans and its vindication for their dedication to the sport which would have started 20-25 years ago...so when the current team started playing the odds were astronomical they would be agents of passing a baton of pride instead of being relegated to pure junk sports status.

For some of the late celebrations, like Lloyds, it well might be her last WC goal. It is likely the last WC for Morgan, Heath, Rapinoe, Ertz, Sauerbrun, OHara, etc. It is the first one to show they can get it done for several others. So expecting more control then we show ( me included) on the swordboards of BBI is an easy critique.

If they inspire other girls that they can get it done under pressure via dedication and passion...what do we care?

As for the Thailand players...for their dedication to an odd sport in their land they get to see the world and have experiences few women in Thailand get to have.

As for the tournament rules FIFA laid out...imo, soccer leadership and administration by its ruling bodies is the choke point of the sports growth

Claudio Reyna's the best US soccer player (non-goalie at least) that I've seen. Unfortunately, he was oft-injured especially during international play. But his performance in the 2002 World Cup was the reason (IMO) they advanced to the quarters. He was just incredibly calm and collected with the ball and a great steadying force in the center of the field.

well said, Bill
PaulBlakeTSU : 6/12/2019 11:41 am : link
I'd also like to add that the women don't have the same professional career opportunities that the men have. Sure, there are womens soccer leagues and European women's soccer leagues seem to be growing. But they aren't making money hand over fist the way male soccer stars make. Effectively, the WWC is the only big stage they have to really shine and impact the game. So from that perspective, I understand the celebrations.

That said, I do think some of the celebrations were a little too over the top when the score was completely out of reach and met historic scoring levels. Thailand was completely outmatched.

As for running up the score, one thing not yet mentioned is that it should be used to send a message to these other countries to invest in their women's sports, especially soccer. Now, Thailand isn't a big player on either stage, but it's embarrassing that a country like Argentina's women's team is as bad as they are considering how obsessed they are with the men's side.

Also, such a blowout reminds me of the 1992 Dream Team when USA basketball full of notable stars would run up the scores on other countries. One could say that tournament, and those huge blowouts were partially responsible for the surge in investment and interest in basketball in those countries, and now basketball in Europe and Africa is as high-level as it has ever been and the NBA has never been so full of international talent.
I think the women's world cup is getting a boost in the ratings this

Jeffrey : 6/12/2019 12:42 pm : link
This team has looked like underachievers in the past year against a few quality teams. The final score against Thailand is an embarrassment to FIFA for diluting the field with teams that are clearly not ready or willing to compete. I do not condone the celebrations and think that the USWNT has probably made themselves the villains of this tournament with what seemed to be over the top reactions against an over-matched team that just quit. When the USWNT shows up and beats France, Germany, England, Australia, Sweden or Norway it will be a true test of their mettle.

"And for the celebrations, these are goals we have dreamt of our entire life. I mean, I'm going to celebrate Mal Pugh's goal. I'm going to celebrate Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle. This is their first World Cup and I'm so proud of them. And I couldn't have dreamt of scoring five goals in a World Cup. So it's incredible for us all and I'm happy just ignoring those comments."

Reading Jeffery's post left me with another point to consider:

The US is not likely to get any breaks from referees to begin with. This is going to make it easy for them to red card some of our more physical players ( some of the good ones) like Mewis, Ertz, Horan.

lastly, to me Lloyd celebrating within the bubble of the team that she still can contribute at 36...ok.

Some of Morgans later goals were beautiful touches by a great athlete...hard not to be excited by very good shots.

Rapinoe, who skied some easy ones, but who's celebration was kinda silly and long...and I think goal 11 or 12...the combination of perspective and celebration in that case I did not like.

I doubt the display against Thailand will cow the teams from Germany, France, England or the Canadians and may in fact encourage the coaching conclusion that bunkering is the only answer against the US Team. Of course that is the style that the US team is most vulnerable to ...witness the last Olympics
I suppose they could
Pete in MD : 6/12/2019 1:39 pm : link
have kept it a 16 team tournament but there will always be lower ranked teams because the different confederations have such different levels of quality. Thailand is ranked 34th in the world and is not the lowest-ranked team. All of the teams from Africa, 2 of 3 from South America, and Jamaica are all ranked lower. A smaller field would mean a lot fewer quality European teams unless they also completely change the qualification rules.
I think the solution...
Tesla : 6/12/2019 2:05 pm : link
is that when determining standing after the first round put a goal cap per match. For example, regardless of score, a team can only be +5 in goals in any one game for standing purposes. Would eliminate the incentive to run up the score in these games.
Obviously, it's only youth soccer

where mom's hurt feelings are magnified, but I've watched many a game (pre-mercy rule) where there was a huge imbalance in talent. I can tell you it's pretty obvious when a team intentionally does not try to score and not only that, it's orders of magnitude more embarrassing. I'd much rather my opponent tried their best, because the alternative is simply being mocked.
if you dont want the US to score, you train hard and prepare
GMAN4LIFE : 6/12/2019 2:16 pm : link
for fuck sake, you want to win. You play. Score them to the ground if you have to. Celebrations, yea maybe excessive but all this talk about them being an embarrassment to young kids. Oh please.

its hard enough to get to that point. Every team went to that Cup to win and try hard. F feelings. Try hard!

In truth there is only one legitimate way to stop another team from celebrating when they score a goal against you...

I guess there's more than one. I meant stop them from scoring (i.e., ...be better).
I want to say I find the reactions to this...

very surprising, but in this PC+++ world I shouldn't be.

I loved every second yesterday. It's the WC and the US was just in a great flow in the final third of the pitch. An area where they have really struggled leading up to the WC. So it was awesome to finally see the attack finally click.

It's very hard to score in soccer. And when you do, unless you are the celestial level of Messi or Renaldo, then celebrate away.

showing good sportsmanship after the match

year due to the clusterfuck that the USMNT is right now and not qualifying for the last world cup.

That has nothing to do with it. The USWNT draws from a casual fan that doesn't watch the USMNT. They show up ONLY during the WC and watch cause the USWNT tends to win. They don't really watch them outside of the WC or even know the NWSL exists. The USMNT fan tends to be a more hardcore soccer fan.

The U.S. cannot develop a world class player until it has a world class league like it does in football, hockey, baseball, and basketball. In soccer pros develop pros so it is it like all North American leagues rather than say the Olympics. Americans can ignore swimming but still produce the best swimmers in the world. That can't happen in soccer. You want world class male players than MLS has to become one of the best leagues in the world. You can't rely on shipping our kids over to Germany at 18 where they might get sporadic playing time. You need a domestic world class league where you know they will develop and play.

Why is a solution needed?
The USA celebrations were an embarrassment to the entire organization.
Knineteen : 6/12/2019 9:08 pm : link
I'm totally OK with running-up the score as it's more of an insult to simply play keep-away from the other team. But chill the fuck out with all the celebrations and stupid gimmicks after every goal. Get together with your teammates, congratulate each other and then go back to mid-field.

Alex Morgan really embarrassed herself attempting to justify the excessive goal celebrations. Megan Rapinoe scores like the 11th goal and she's sliding on the field and acting like she's getting shocked with a taser. Enough already.

Except that Pulisic is well on his way to world class and he went over to Germany. The problem isn't the MLS perse, its the fact thatnin other countries they get put on a path for professional soccer at 16. That just doesn't happen here and the NCAA further complicates matters.

plenty of people only watch the USMNT during world cup (when they make it) or the Olympics.

And I'm pretty sure, anyone who follows the USWNT at all, also follow the USMNT.

They both have their hard core and casual fans.

I agree with this. I was okay with the girls making their WWC debut celebrating after their goals-- it's a dream come true to score in the World Cup. But Morgan and Rapinoe have scored how many goals and played in how many World Cup matches?
The celebrations were sincere, not insulting
WideRight : 6/14/2019 11:04 am : link

I understand how it could be perceived as too much, but this is what these individuals have given their life to, and should reap the rewards of their work, which includes enjoying the outcomes.

As far as the Morgan and Rapinoe, the one thing that stood out to me was that they were were making fantastic plays. Executing at the highest level when it mattered most. They should be ecstatic
What a joke

I can’t for the life of me figure out why anyone is pissed about this. It’s the definition of overreacting. Reading non athletes bitch and moan about celebrating goals scored at the highest level of competition is tiresome and comical.

I hope they score 13 more and celebrate.

those women do an absolute fuckload off the field that shows their actual character. Celebrating a goal doesn’t define them, it’s shocking that you think that.
