I know a chronological, 400-minute-plus version was released a few years back. I have not seen it in that iteration.
The original and the second are among my very favorite movies. No matter how many times I watch either, I am always rapt.
Wanted to ask those who HAVE seen it chronologically - what did you think? Does it change things for you, as far as how you view the film? Was it just a fun aside for you (how I imagine I'd approach watching it that way)? Did it take away from its greatness for you?
For those who haven't seen it that way, are you boycotting? Hope to see it that way? Just haven't gotten around to it yet (which is my reason for not seeing it yet)?
Is it better overall? No. When you take away the challenge of seeing a film and placing the pieces together you destroy the essence that makes cinema so impactful.
Same ... but it came up this morning ... I'm kinda curious about the cuts/transitions/flow, etc.
I think I can still go back and enjoy it the way it came out.
I think it’s worth watching for any fan, but also agree it’s not the same effect as opening with the Don taking meetings in his office on Connie’s wedding day.

Wasn’t the scene of Michael telling the family about his military plans always at the end of Part 2?
Thanks ... that's what I'm curious about ... any additions like that. Good deal.
You’re watching a different movie then. It’s Bonasera the undertaker who says the opening line. And it’s “I believe in America”.

I’m watching The Godfather. Starting it with Vito’s youth kind of throws it all off for me. Then, you go from the kitchen table where Michael tells his siblings he’s joining the Marines on Vito’s birthday right to Enzo’s words on Connie’s wedding day. Not a fan of the chronological version.

Wait..you’re right...the undertaker

Michael telling his brothers his enlisted in the military...one of his assassins catching up with Fabrizio...right? Those are cool to see.

You may be right, it’s been a while since I watched either of them. I do recall there being a couple added scenes in the chronological version.

It was a much longer scene in the chrono version
Lonk - ( New Window )
I DVR'd the Saga when it was on HBO and watched it a half-dozen times or so since then. It's outstanding if you're a fan of the franchise.
To me the chronological is akin to someone buying a Rembrandt because it fits the color scheme of their living room. The fact that so much of Godfather 2 offsets the families past history and the present is beautifully done. Seeing everything placed in order pales in comparison.
It would be like recutting a Tarantino movie chronologically (particularly RD, PF, KB). You could, but wouldn't that make it more like any other movie? It would take much of the Tarantino out of his movies
The added scenes would be cool to see. Tho adding content in one and not the other IMO is not fair in terms of making an even comparison
Is there another version out there ? Does it include III ?
