NFT: Another "Godfather" thread: Watching it chronologically.

Beezer : 6/13/2019 10:56 am
I know a chronological, 400-minute-plus version was released a few years back. I have not seen it in that iteration.

The original and the second are among my very favorite movies. No matter how many times I watch either, I am always rapt.

Wanted to ask those who HAVE seen it chronologically - what did you think? Does it change things for you, as far as how you view the film? Was it just a fun aside for you (how I imagine I'd approach watching it that way)? Did it take away from its greatness for you?

For those who haven't seen it that way, are you boycotting? Hope to see it that way? Just haven't gotten around to it yet (which is my reason for not seeing it yet)?
I'm not boycotting it. I'm just happy to rewatch 1 & 2 the way they

It took away the cinematic touch
Eli2020 : 6/13/2019 11:00 am : link
But I thought it actually told the story better. Makes it, for better or worse, much easier to digest and contemplate simply because you can clearly see the story arc.

Is it better overall? No. When you take away the challenge of seeing a film and placing the pieces together you destroy the essence that makes cinema so impactful.

Same ... but it came up this morning ... I'm kinda curious about the cuts/transitions/flow, etc.

I think I can still go back and enjoy it the way it came out.
I saw it an liked it...
rnargi : 6/13/2019 11:06 am : link
as mentioned above, cinematically, it wasn't quite up to par. But the addition of deleted scenes answered some questions and filled in some gaps. My fave was Genco's death scene. I won't ruin it for you.
When I hear Enzo the baker saying he loves America, I know

I’m watching The Godfather. Starting it with Vito’s youth kind of throws it all off for me. Then, you go from the kitchen table where Michael tells his siblings he’s joining the Marines on Vito’s birthday right to Enzo’s words on Connie’s wedding day. Not a fan of the chronological version.
haven't seen the chronological version
UConn4523 : 6/13/2019 11:10 am : link
but I don't see why it would enhance the story. I like it the way it is.
I think it’s the chronological version that adds a couple scenes
mfsd : 6/13/2019 11:11 am : link
Michael telling his brothers his enlisted in the military...one of his assassins catching up with Fabrizio...right? Those are cool to see.

I think it’s worth watching for any fan, but also agree it’s not the same effect as opening with the Don taking meetings in his office on Connie’s wedding day.

Wasn’t the scene of Michael telling the family about his military plans always at the end of Part 2?

Thanks ... that's what I'm curious about ... any additions like that. Good deal.
Marlon Brando's portrayal

Of Mario Puzo's, Don Vito Corleone, is easily one of the very best acting performances I've seen to date.

You’re watching a different movie then. It’s Bonasera the undertaker who says the opening line. And it’s “I believe in America”.

i loved the Godfather Epic. That was a combination of 1 & 2 with extra footage. Was not a big fan of the Godfather 3, but they keep dragging me back in.

You may be right, it’s been a while since I watched either of them. I do recall there being a couple added scenes in the chronological version.
Though the chronological version was great
BillT : 6/13/2019 11:51 am : link
Made it into a real epic. Look, it's great either way but I liked the chronological version a lot.
The problem is that there are several versions of the chrono version
rnargi : 6/13/2019 12:17 pm : link
the first was a made for TV special that's only aired twice, called the Godfathter Saga. That's the one I originally saw in 2012. It's by far the most complete, it had 77 minutes or something like that of deleted and/or extra scenes. It's commercially unavailable. Then there are at least two DVD sets, one called Godfather Epic and the other the Godfather 1904 - 1975 or something similar. They differ from the Saga, less added material but better production from what I've heard. I haven't seen either of those.

It was a much longer scene in the chrono version
Here's a much better wiki than mine, lol!

I DVR'd the Saga when it was on HBO and watched it a half-dozen times or so since then. It's outstanding if you're a fan of the franchise.
Saw the chronological some time ago
Tony in Tampa : 6/13/2019 12:35 pm : link
And I thought " well that was different", but I honestly was not a fan of it. Godfather 1 and 2 are epics and I want to see them in the masterful way they were originally depicted.

To me the chronological is akin to someone buying a Rembrandt because it fits the color scheme of their living room. The fact that so much of Godfather 2 offsets the families past history and the present is beautifully done. Seeing everything placed in order pales in comparison.
I think its called the Godfather Epic if I'm not mistaken
PatersonPlank : 6/13/2019 12:54 pm : link
I have it recorded along with the Godfather Legacy documentary. I really like it, it gives the first 2 godfathers a different feel. I also like the fact that it contains a few scenes that were cut from the released versions. For example I always wondered what happened to Fabrizio, he just ran off. I believe there is a scene showing him in Buffalo, leaving his pizza restaurant, and gets blown up. This was Michael getting back at him for the bombing that killed Apollonia.
I didn't know about this, so it's an interesting take
ChaChing : 6/13/2019 1:07 pm : link
but still, I'm w/ Tony's post above overall. 2 in particular was amazing as is w/ the past & present

It would be like recutting a Tarantino movie chronologically (particularly RD, PF, KB). You could, but wouldn't that make it more like any other movie? It would take much of the Tarantino out of his movies

The added scenes would be cool to see. Tho adding content in one and not the other IMO is not fair in terms of making an even comparison
Did the chronological version ever come out on DVD ?
Ron from Ninerland : 6/13/2019 5:48 pm : link
I wasn't aware that it did. I remember something called "The Godfather Epic" on VHS which had I and II in chronological order with a lot of deleted scenes and never made it too DVD.

Is there another version out there ? Does it include III ?
The chronological versions butcher the films
Sneakers O'toole : 6/14/2019 11:35 am : link
Godfather II is all about the comparison and contrast between father and son. It's meant to be seen the way it is.
The Saga re-cut
Pete in MD : 6/14/2019 12:42 pm : link
was apparently a money-grab by Coppola so he could finish Apocalypse Now.
