NFT: The Knicks...in the Second Round

Anakim : 6/13/2019 12:39 pm
Yeah, I'm bored at work.

So it sounds like #3 will be RJ Barrett, but who are you guys keeping an eye on in the second round? As it stands now, we have a late second rounder, but we could trade for/buy one come draft night.

One guy who may be a steal is PG Jaylen Hands of UCLA. He's a really underrated athlete and was a 5 star recruit out of HS a couple of years back.

Or maybe a streaky sharpshooter like LaGerald Vick?
Zach Norvell.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 6/13/2019 12:48 pm : link
I don't see him as a NBA starter, but I think he can have a long, successful career as a microwave guy off the bench. I think he's a better shooter than his numbers show because his shot selection was often questionable. Excellent free throw shooter. Very competitive. Underrated ability to create for teammates. My biggest knocks against him are consistency of defensive effort and streaky shooting.
Hoping
TommyWiseau : 6/13/2019 12:56 pm : link
we can use some Cash to buy another second round pick or two. Atlanta has three second round picks (on top of 3 first round picks) and the 76ers also have 4 second round picks.

Second me as a fan of Jaylon Hands, he is athletic and has a nice shot. Possible he is there with out 2nd pick
Seems like Tacko Fall is a target
Anakim : 6/13/2019 1:02 pm : link
.
Jaylen Hoard might be interesting
Greg from LI : 6/13/2019 1:06 pm : link
He wasn't great last year but he was stuck on a terrible Wake team with a terrible coach in Danny Manning. He's young and a good athlete with good length (7'1" wingspan) and quickness who could potentially guard 2-4 in the NBA, and he does have some skills offensively despite his mediocre output as a freshman.

Not that this will surprise anyone, but if you're looking for a sharpshooter, Kyle Guy is my man. Yes, he's small, very small for an NBA 2. He might be able to fake some point, but it's hard to tell because Virginia never used him that way. What he does have is a lightning quick release, much better athleticism than people think, and a terrific all-around game. Quality passer. Averaged 4.5 boards a game despite his lack of size. Tenacious competitor, all the intangibles you could ever want.
Buy a high second rounder
sjnyfan : 6/13/2019 1:14 pm : link
And draft Darius Bazley. He reminds of Mitch's story. He was a 5 star recruit, played in all the All Star games and camps but ultimately decided to sit out the year and train for the draft. Long wingspan, front court versatility and can shoot outside.
FWIW, CBS has us taking
Del Shofner : 6/13/2019 1:22 pm : link
PG Jordan Bone of Tennessee at #55, with Hoard getting picked just before us at #53.
Ty Jerome
Vanzetti : 6/13/2019 1:37 pm : link
Won't be a star but a smart, heady player, who will be a rotation guy. Might go end of first but could fall to beginning of second
Tacko Fall is a pretty good gamble
ghost718 : 6/13/2019 1:40 pm : link
I'd like that

Maybe Luka Samanic
Jerome is most likely a first rounder
Greg from LI : 6/13/2019 1:45 pm : link
He'd be an excellent bench guard for a contender. Smart, great passer, very good shooter, ice in his veins.

I don't think Tacko is destined to be a 40 minute a game guy. For me, he's probably best used as a mismatch in shorter bursts, kinda like how coaches use Boban to come in and fuck shit up and then back to the bench he goes.

Well, he's 24. But yeah, I thought Dawkins was pretty impressive last year. Skilled and very competitive. Even though he had one of the most excruciating misses I've ever seen against Duke.

Canadian kid who when he was on was unstoppable. Did not play up to expectations but stayed in the draft after some dominant camp performances. Big sleeper - I have seen him sneaking into the end of the first to not getting picked in mocks. I think he ends up being a steal for someone in the second.

Barrett's outstanding freshman season is not only one of the best in Duke's history, but it also measures up with some of the best freshman campaigns in NCAA history. One freshman season, in particular, is that of Carmelo Anthony, who led Syracuse to a National Championship in his lone college season.

Comparing freshman seasons
Season PTS REB AST TS%
Carmelo Anthony 2002-03 22.2 10.0 2.2 53.7
RJ Barrett 2018-19 22.6 7.6 4.3 53.2

Interesting... Melo's percentages weren't far off from Barrett's and Barrett is already a better/more willing passer.

It would make sense for a team like these two to land him. There's a window open with Durant's injury where the rental could be worthwhile and Denver specifically could easily outdo LA and likely Boston.
How many of his assists were basically handoffs to Zion for dunks?

I didn't count but I'm not sure why that matters. He has good vision and operates well out of the pnr. That should be more apparent with NBA spacing and some better shooters around him Who else is he supposed to execute that with on that Duke team? He averaged more assists in the games without Zion than he did with Zion anyways. Plus he's going to have this guy to execute that with at the next level.

Which is why the Knicks are fucked.
Zion..
FatMan in Charlotte : 6/13/2019 4:56 pm : link
was a bit of a mythical exaggeration.

He was an excellent player, but Barrett was also an excellent player who took over several games while Zion was out or having a lull.

And when the loss to Michigan St. was hanging in the balance, it was Zion missing two shots in the paint and missing two FT's.

Ironically, both guys averaged exactly the same - 22.6ppg

One gripe I have about Scott Perry is he talked a lot about knowing what a championship team looks like due to his time in Detroit, but that team played defense and shared the basketball. Guys like Knox, Barrett and Smith Jr. don't do a whole lot of either, and those are three of the four biggest building blocks on the roster (along with Mitch). I'm a little skeptical at the moment.
Culver might be a better fit for the Knicks

RJ blew a game in the clutch as well. Barrett's selfishness cost Duke the game against Duke. He completely shat the bed in the closing minutes, including a final block by Rui on Barrett. If Barrett had passed it to an open Delaurier, Duke would've sent the game into OT.

So on one hand you admire Barrett's aggressiveness and his desire to be the clutch hero, but on the other hand he takes so many unnecessary and poor shots down in the winding minutes that you would think he was Melo.

Kyrie is expected to sign with the Nets (as expected). Also said that in May Kyrie wanted Brooklyn but Durant was heavily leaning towards signing with the Knicks. Who knows if the injury has changed his plans but we'll find out in two weeks.

But this constant shitting on anything positive about Barrett is getting almost pathological. He gets 18 assists in 2 games and you brush it off as a bunch of alley oops to Zion? I guess Magic's million assists to maybe the greatest Center of all time for unstoppable sky hooks don't count either. Virtually every GM in the NBA would sprint to the podium to pick him #3. A number of the would probably take him at #2 but we're fucked if we take him????
