Practice Highlight: Scott Simonson gathers in circus catch - ( New Window )
Regardless of what many
jvm52106 : 6/13/2019 2:01 pm : link
players and or former players say, when you take an attention getter out of the equation it allows for more people to become involved and invested and it allows for management (coaching) to be the actual powers. When attention getters are kind of their own thing- behavior, attitude, issues etc., they can, even without intention, be divisive to overall team chemistry.

I am liking this team way more than teams the last few years and I hope that translates to wins but mostly to the creation of a winning foundation..

The catch is ok, but Jones placed that ball behind the LB'er where only the receiver was going to catch it. Very nice.

According to Schmeelk and Salomone, Daniel Jones had another very good day.
Some really strong comments...
Dan in the Springs : 6/13/2019 2:21 pm : link
including interesting observation about the chemistry and energy, saying this is the best they've seen in 12 years. Very interesting.

I've been thinking about Saquon and how he is all professional. Little things like how he handles success on and off the field are impressive and can influence others if he becomes a leader. The reports seem to indicate that he is taking more of a leadership role and I wonder if that hasn't in part played into how the team is approaching their work.

***Mandatory disclaimer - Of course it's only OTA's*** but it's easy to be excited when reading reports like these.

Thanks Eric for all you do! Makes if fun and easy to follow our favorite team!

What did Lombardo say?

WR group
mittenedman : 6/13/2019 3:07 pm : link
Even without Odell, I like the Giants WR group this year.

They have 2 solid starters in Tate & Shepard + a stable of young fill-ins at the #3.

The favorite based on last year is Latimer - he seemed to get the nod when healthy and showed some playmaking ability.

Fowler impressed me last year, consistently made tough catch, fought for yards and found sticks. Good field awareness and seems to be in the right spot when ball comes his way. Blocks.

Then you've got Coleman, who looks comfortable here, and Slayton who seems to have Cruz'd OTA's and mini-camp and is a deep threat. And I like Wesley and White as developmentals (PS).

That means Russell Sheppard, a solid special teams player, leader and backup WR, is probably out. And if somebody gets injured he's the #6.

The group's missing that Alpha Dog but is stronger top to bottom than anything we've had lately. Good mix of possession & 2 deep threats (Coleman & Slayton). They won't scare anyone but I think Shurmur's got plenty of selfless guys to mix & match. Gotta like the fact Eli has a good rapport with most of them, too.
People were real optimistic on lattimer last year
Ten Ton Hammer : 6/13/2019 3:17 pm : link
For no apparent reason. And that didnt bear fruit at all.
I'm not real optimistic
mittenedman : 6/13/2019 3:21 pm : link
I see him as a lunchpail guy who can get in there and contribute. Good special teams guy. Best utilized as a #4/5.

That to me is the difference though between this Gettleman roster and many before it. It's full of football players. There isn't a lot of top end talent but not many chumps either. In fact, looking over a projected 53 I can't really find one.

Not sure how many wins it will translate to but this team has the feel of an 84 Giants type upswing.

Yup, and you probably can come up with dozens and dozens of other examples. At the same time, counter examples could also be provided.

If you're in the OTAs don't mean shit crowd, I suggest staying away from threads like this.
And P.S.
mittenedman : 6/13/2019 3:23 pm : link
Jones is really ripping the football. Quick release and lots of pop on that throw to Simonson. Good combination.
Fowler
Marty866b : 6/13/2019 3:32 pm : link
He didn't look half bad last year. Appears that he may have elevated his game by getting in great shape.

Culture is hugely important.
It seems like a competition between Latimer, Coleman
BSIMatt : 6/13/2019 5:24 pm : link
and possibly Slayton for that outside splitend WR spot, with Tate and Shep interchangeable at slot and flanker. It would be fantastic if Coleman could revive his career with the Giants, he certainly has some talent. Another Giant WR with sub 4.4 speed(including a 1.51 10 yard split which is incredible).

Quote:

“You haven’t seen the best of Corey Coleman yet,” Coleman told Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com. “I feel like I’m getting better and better, and I’m just trying to stay humble and do what they ask of me. I’m happy to be here, and I’m not worried about what happened and didn’t happen in the past. I don’t look back in time. I’m comfortable with this team and in this offense, and I’m excited to show everything people thought I could do, and I know I can still do in this league. Nothing’s given to you, and it’s my job to prove it.”

Coleman, 24, won the Biletnikoff Award as the best receiver in college football in 2015. Since arriving in the NFL, the former Baylor star has carried the “bust” label.

But the Giants believe in Coleman as much as Coleman believes in himself.

“We are going to see the best of [Coleman],” Giants coach Pat Shurmur said. “He’s the first one to tell you when he came in the league, he had a lot to learn. Now he’s got an opportunity to maybe be a front-line player.”

Giants believe they are going to see “the best of Corey Coleman” - ( New Window )

for a WR, he is tough guy. Blocks and catches the ball. Does the little things. I think he is a guy you want on your team.

What is very encouraging
Jay on the Island : 6/13/2019 6:53 pm : link
is that Jones has looked better than anticipated while throwing to players like Slayton, Fowler, Conrad, and Simonson. Those four are more talented that what he had to work with at Duke.

I am excited to see how he performs when he is playing with the 1st unit and throwing to Shepard, Tate, Engram, and Barkley.

I would rather keep Fowler over Latimer. Latimer has the speed but Fowler is just better all around. If either Coleman or Slayton become the deep threat on offense then Latimer is redundant.
I might be wrong

But I think the strong statement Gettleman made with trading Beckham has something to do with the positive energy.

I dunno. I keep coming back to everything is relative. Fowler looks good and all and maybe is one of the best we have. It if you look at his resume, he is the quintessential journeyman. It makes you wonder how much we may be deceiving ourselves.

As of this early point in time according to Schmeelk and Dottino on today's BBKOL PS is crowd sourcing WR #3, who is probably a key player, the X receiver/ split end.

3A Lattimer
3B Coleman
3C Fowler
3D Slayton

If listed them in what I suppose is the pecking order according to Dottino and Scmeelk, but from A to D there's about a hair's breadth of separation because even Slayton is seeing "time with the ones."

Fowler was noted as "standing out" among the crowd at X.
I'm really hoping

Jones is the starting qb.. Manning hasnt had an arm in a few years and its just getting worse.. he puts everything he has in his throws at times and its just. Ad.

Fowler looked better on the field last season than Latimer IMO. Here is the comparison in terms of performance over the past 4 seasons.
Fowler
rec 16 203 yds
rec 11 145 yds
rec 29 350 yds
rec 16 199 yds

Latimer
rec 6 59 yds
rec 8 76 yds
rec 19 287 yds
rec 11 190 yds

Neither are difference maker and special teams will likely decide if they make the roster.

Total culture change. Very underrated. It's going to pay dividends this year.
Great point Dane.
mittenedman : 6/14/2019 11:46 am : link
Haven't heard a peep. We all heard how well-liked he was etc. but we aren't hearing much now. I have a feeling the same is true with LC.

IMO Beckham is a complete psychopath (and showed that to us rather clearly) and it probably feels good to just have him gone. And when you're emotional leader is never around, the guys naturally "throttle down" and have a "wait until Beckham's here THEN the energy will be great" mindset.

it's human nature. Very glad he (and Collins) are gone. 2 vocal guys and attention whores who everyone deferred to.
