NFT: Fire destroys 100,000 master recordings of major artists

bigblue5611_2 : 6/13/2019 2:06 pm
The fire occurred over a decade ago on the back lot of Universal but there was never much detail given apparently. It's not coming out that over 100,000 master recordings were lost including those of Nirvana, REM, Clapton, Aerosmith, The Eagles, Soundgarden, Guns N Roses and the list goes on...

This really sucks. Probably most, if not all, the albums have been re-released on digital, cd or other formats and with the highest audio quality. However, as the article mentions, I am sure there were things in those recordings that were never released or never heard by anyone else other than those present at the recording that will never be able to be heard now.

The "highest recording quality " will always be the master tape.

Just terrible. It included recordings that were never released. Utterly irreplaceable. Devastating.
I remmeber that fire very well

Happened a few weeks before we were to shoot on the Universal back lot and it made for much scrambling by many productions to find alternate locations. We ended up at Studio City on the Seinfeld Street.

No one ever mentioned the fire had destroyed so many original recordings.
Reminds me of the line in the song...
