I know bullpen ERA's are misleading, but usually it's because the relievers don't get charged for all the inherited runners that score when they come in, the pitcher(s) who allowed the runners do (sans errors), so this is painting a picture that isn't really as bad as the current situation.

#Mets bullpen ERA, last 16+ games - 9.55.
That includes 7 1/3 IP of scoreless relief from Seth Lugo.
Says if they didnt fire Mickey yet, they wont this year. Also said no way they pay for a manager like Girardi. If they're looking for someone new next year, they'll get the same low salary option we're used to. Says Wilpons actually dont get it and think being around .500 isn't that bad
and starting rotation have underperformed. There are some underlying numbers that give you hope that there can be some regression. Most of the pitchers FIP is better than ERA, for both rotation and bullpen. We will at some point get injured players such as Nimmo, J. Wilson, Lowrie, Cano back at some point. Pete Alonso is a STUD.
But bottom line, looking at this roster, our core players, especially pitchers, have got to pitch to their talent levels.
Familia, Syndergaard, Wheeler are what is killing this team. If they pitched to their potential---a high end set-up man and two (at least) #2 starters, and we're going to be in a much better place.
the SP have left something like 20 of the last 30 games with a lead
and that's despite the dogshit D and inconsistent offense. The SP have been the strength of this team so far YTD, and they are the only group that truly has underlying numbers that indicate bad luck. They are 3rd overall in fwar in the NL behind only Washington and LA and that's despite have the 4th worst BABIP behind them thanks to a league worst D. The bullpen, defense, and manager are the core issues in that order.
Also, how can we say the D is underperforming? Which starting player is an above average defender on this roster? None of our offseason additions were. Our LF'er is a converted 2B or 3B or 1B. Rosario has not improved at all and if anything regressed since he first came up.
The only 3 players that are even arguable positives are Lagares, who is having a down year by his standards and can't hit enough to stay in the lineup, Conforto (solid but unspectacular in right), and shockingly Alonso, who was supposed to be a borderline DH-only.
When you don't have good defensive players you shouldn't expect to have a good defense. It's really pretty simple. Met's 3rd in SP fwar (NL) - ( New Window )

Some breaking news: The Mets have agreed on a deal with their 2nd-round pick, Texas prep, righty, Josh Wolf, per a league source.
He will sign for above slot. Slot value is $1,370,400.
Deal should be finalized next week.
Not sure that'a a good thing (being above slot) they picked up 466k on Baty (1st round pick) and 1.4M on the seniors, but they'll need every cent of that and more to get close enough to sign Matthew Allan.

Yes agreed. Assume if they didn't have a number in mind for Allan they knew he'd agree too they'll leave him and go with Barco and the rest.

Keep in mind the Mets have absolutely no SP depth. Flexen is a reliever now, Oswalt is on the AAA IL, Santiago was DFAd, Font has been bad.
I would take a wild guess and say Walker Lockett gets Syndergaards start if he has to miss time.
Ervin Santana is my guess.
Could be. Would require a roster move since Lockett is on the 40-man and Santana is not. But I'd feel better about Santana. He was good in his last start in STL - after one decent and one terrible start.
but everything Mickey touches turns to shit. Another game and another loss in the bullpen. Another lost series at home to a mediocre opponent. About to be another completely lost season in June. Rinse and repeat. Being a mets fan sucks.
I wonder if they would be willing to trade Lugo. The Braves have a huge hole in their bullpen and Lugo would be the perfect fit. Lugo and Raisel Iglesias are my favorite two potential targets but they will both be costly.
I don't know if the Mets would be willing to trade Lugo especially to a contender but I would be willing to give up Kolby Allard or Joey Wentz plus a relief prospect or lower tier prospect for Lugo or Iglesias.
Especially since they will almost definitely be trying to turn things around next year and not be entering a full rebuild - they will (should) only trade him if they get a return that's worth it. I'm not expecting a full Diaz level return, but kind of like Hand last year there's going to have to be someone involved with upside that's just too hard to pass up. I don't think back end starter types are gonna get it done. CF and higher upside arms would be the ideal areas since that's where our system is weak. I'd imagine you're gonna say no way, but just browsing your top 10 list Drew Waters is the type of "can't say no to that" prospect it would take if it were me.
RE: Jay - I'd trade Lugo but 3.5 years of cheap control will cost more

No I agree that Allard wont likely be enough. There is no way I would trade Pache or Waters unless its in a package for a young front of the rotation SP with control.
Understandable - I wish we didnt trade Kelenic for Diaz
I doubt theres a gm out there looking to make the same mistake BVW made but at the same time even Hand brought back Mejia. Lugo is currently 20th in fwar among relievers, he can start if its needed, and if he stays in the BP his arb years should stay very manageable since he doesnt close. If hes not bringing back something good its an easy call to hold him.
....I recall some positive feelings when the Mets hired Allard Baird and Adam Guttridge as Brodie was filling out the baseball operations. I hope they sign Matthew Allan. Like many of you, I am in my mid-40s so I share the same concern where I will eventually be apathetic. Brodie's moves for the ML roster are rightfully being questioned. I didn't think the major league roster was going to be able to be turned around quickly so with some of the new front office staff hired, I am still interested to see how this will end up but as always, we have the Wilpons who will always be an obstacle.
...tho he did imply he wasn't as big a personality or outspoken

Take it for what it's worth. Hope he is wromg
get this game over.
Anything can happen but how do they not get swept by Atl the way things look atm?

Sources: Mets believe they can sign third rounder RHP Matthew Allan with a bonus in the $2.5-$2.75 range.
They are still confident that a deal will get done.
