I’ve had an iPhone since 2011 & have no complaints; however, I’d like to try something new. I’m bored with the iPhone & I’m curious about trying an Android.
Has anyone done this? If so, what did you think? Any specific phones you recommend?
There are too many androids out there and they don’t last as long. I did the same thing and acted on what you’re thinking and it was a huge regret. I looked for a way out ASAP.
I really don’t see the point, too much of a hassle IMO. I use email, an internet browser, camera, and some apps. Don’t know what android can offer me to improve any of those experiences (and vice versa to be fair).
Ever again. I was customer with them for over a decade and their one phone I had just all of a sudden went dark on half the screen. They admitted there was a defect on the phone and I was not responsible. I asked them how I could replace it and they said I had to buy a whole new one since my warranty ran out three days earlier even though I had insurance on it.
Fuck them.
I made the switch a couple years ago and couldn't Â
I've had Moto X/Z phones, but I absolutely love my Pixel 2. The newer mid-range Pixel 3a is quite nice, my friend has one, and it is close to my flagship-level phone.
I personally don't like the Samsung phones, but they are quality.
stick with the iPhone. I've owned nothing but Androids, and for the novice it's just not the best option. Android is about as elegant under the sheets as Windows 3.1.
oh yeah, and Google won't let you do anything with the assistant Â

“Android” doesn’t make phones. It’s not even a company. Somebody else screwed you. If you had insurance it was likely through your carrier - perhaps they screwed you.
I've had both and most the flagships on the Android. Â
I bought a Pixel when it came out and have the Pixel 3 now and I'm never looking back. Gives you the smooth use of the Iphone without all the restrictive nonsense. They are also way ahead on the tech. I remember sitting on my couch and my buddy with the new Iphone that came out was obsessed with his new augmented reality and I just laughed when he was like you see this. Yeh it's been out on the Pixel for over a year now.
I see why people like Apple though, it is really good for those that aren't really intuitive about technology. People are willing to pay a premium for that, I get it. That being said I'd defiantly recommend the Pixel for them because it is practically an Iphone for Android. Even though I'm pretty much the only non-engineer that I've met that has the Pixel.
Long time android then work put us on iPhones. I stuck with it for 2 years then said fuck this and got a personal android/Samsung again. I just need the phone to work and can't spend my personal time fuking with Apple. And paying for stuff. Plus have children, the cameras is adulthood on a Samsung

Insurance on phones is the biggest scam ever. The margins these companies make is way more than the average insurance. Unless you are super accident prone it makes no sense and now they have places everywhere that fix cracked screens for cheap. If you can't afford a sudden expense to your phone you probably need a cheaper phone.
I took a trip with a buddy recently. I have a Samsung Galaxy S9+ and he has an iPhone X.
At the end of the weekend he said your phone does everything better than mine (camera , nav, 4G connection, screen, battery). He's planning to switch with his next phone.
And what can/do you do on Androids that you can’t on an iPhone?
Full file system access is a big one for me. Easy connect-ability to my Surface as well to do all the shit I want to do on there. There are also an ass ton of apps that aren't available to IOS users.
RE: If both parties have the app it isn't a problem. Â
after using an Iphone for a few years. Android is much better. Better battery life, better camera, you can wirelessly exchange files between phone and computer, file system set up like a home computer, and more bang for your $.
RE: RE: If both parties have the app it isn't a problem. Â
Apple supports Google Duo, Snapchat, Skype, Facebook Messenger, and I'm sure a bunch of others.
The problem will be convincing the other people to install and use the app. Apple users tend to shy away from using something other than FaceTime.
If it's his grandkids that isn't a problem, but yeh I get your point. The one advantage Apple does have is they standardized everything so everyone has it, makes things more accessible.
But Apple certainly didn't make it easy to switch.
I remember complaints of people not receiving text messages from other iphones once they switched from an iPhone to Androids. I don't remember the particulars, but it had something to do with imessage persisting, so that text message deliveries would still attempt to use it and never reach your Android as a result. I think it even went to court.

I remember dealing with the lack of file system access once from an iPad. I found it absurd that I simply couldn't easily extract an MP3 from it without using more unwanted Apple stuff.

I think imessage is the single biggest thing that has people locked in. I wish Android had a similar standard option. It is the one feature that I wish android had.

it’s theft or misplacing phone for good that makes me stick w insurance.
I think imessage is the single biggest thing that has people locked in. I wish Android had a similar standard option. It is the one feature that I wish android had.
It does - Android Messages.
How does this work across platforms like iPads etc?
That and the Apple Watch 3 compatibility is why I stay.
I’m also really considering finally dropping Apple once my watch gets phased out w classic Apple scam updates as I am sick of the whole “backup fail due to lack of space” money scheme to pay for iCloud. My phone has 30GB or useless storage yet I can’t store my photos on the hard drive and instead have to on the cloud.
I'm going to tell you to go with a Google phone or one that at very least runs just the base Android operating system with immediate updates. What Apple does right is updating all their phones to the latest operating system.
The fragmentation of the Android world leads to slow(if any updates) when google launches a new version of Android. I have an Essential Phone, which receives updates the same day an anyone phone as a Google Phone. In fact I am running a Beta of Android 10.0.
I think imessage is the single biggest thing that has people locked in. I wish Android had a similar standard option. It is the one feature that I wish android had.
It does - Android Messages.
Try WhatsApp, pretty much what the rest of the world (outside the USA) uses. I text with friends from other countries without issue all day.

WhatsApp is great. Used it when my daughters were overseas. Had several multi user video chats.
I really don’t see the point, too much of a hassle IMO. I use email, an internet browser, camera, and some apps. Don’t know what android can offer me to improve any of those experiences (and vice versa to be fair).
I come at this from the other direction. I've been an android (Samsung) user since 2014. I don't regret my initial switching, since Androids (can) have much better hardware. (The camera on my Note 5 was infinitely better than the iPhone equivalent at the time.) And I have better control over my device. But your last point is valid for both. (I'm glad you included the "vice versa".) And since iPhones are so popular, interoperability makes it wise to just stick with the iPhone unless you really know your devices and would benefit from the added control of Android. But if you're just talking to people, it probably pays to stick with the Apple...
I can't handle the PC environment or the Android environment.
It's Apple all the way for me.
I tried to go back to PC and Android for all the reasons mentioned above; but after banging my head against a wall a few times, and relying on unreliable techs to bail me out: I'm out and won't return.
If Apple ever goes under -- I'll probably need to pass on.
If you are going to switch, there are only two options IMO: Â
The single biggest issue with android IMO is fragmentation and all of the other manufacturers do a garbage job of updating phones.
I don't know if you are familiar with the inner workings of android, but google releases the OS and the manufacturers often times put their own software on them to make them stand out from the crowd. The problem with this, is that every time google comes out with an update, the manufacturer has to take extra steps to update their phones due to their software skin; and often times they don't do it.
Lets take a look at Samsung which is the most popular androind manufacturer.
Samsung: the galaxy 9 series was released in March 2018, so about a year ago. It launched with Android 8. The issue: Android 9 was already released by google when it went on sale and didn't get updated until 9 months later. It won't get an android 10 update.
I have two beefs with Samsung: their business model is to sell you a new phone every year, so they abandon support for their phones after a year to get you to buy their latest and greatest. Hardware wise, they make a good phone, but despise their software interface and much prefer 'stock' android.
It's basically the same story with every manufacturer: LG, Sony, HTC, etc; EXCEPT for Google and OnePlus.
Google supports pixel phones OS updates for at least 2, years and 3 years for security updates which you are guaranteed to get monthly. Right now, the Pixel, Pixel 2, Pixel 3, Pixel 3a phones are all running the same Android 9 OS. When 10 is officially released in a few months, all of the phones (except maybe the original Pixel) will be updated to Android which no other manufacturer can say.
The closest IMO is OnePlus, they do a decent job of updating their phones as well.
So long story short, if you switch, go with a Google Pixel phone so your phone wont feel obsolete after 1 year and you can enjoy android as google intends it to be without any stupid manufacturer software skin over the top. OnePlus is a back-up option.
If you can wait until Oct, the pixel 4 will be released then.
But Apple certainly didn't make it easy to switch.

Still happens. It is why I will never buy an apple product.
and been a mixed bag. I now own an A5 (about same price as S6) and kinda regret it.
The main benefit of IOS is if anyone you know has one and makes some communication easier. Had an IPhone for work for a month and felt I was in a straightjacket.
Today I would look seriously at the OnePLus7 Pro if I didn't care about the elimination of a 3.5mm Jack; I do, so I won't.
That is the other plus about the Pixel if you take care of your phone Â
Have the original Pixel which is nearly 3 years old and still gets regular updates and is just as snappy as when I bought it. Battery life is diminishing but that’s life with LiOn batteries.
I like having full control of my phone, so I stick with a rooted Android.
I get it though, there are some things like the hardware that apple just does better.
But the whole package is better for me, and it's a nicer camera which helps.
Fuck them.
I'm a slave to Google, so that made things much easier.
My Samsung 6s has been lightyears better than any iphone I ever owned, quality wise.
You can easily upgrade storage and batteries.
I was getting sick of the limited iOS platform.
For what a phone does, iphones are incredibly overpriced and hyped.
I was getting sick of Apple in general ($999 for a monitor stand? Really?)
I've had Moto X/Z phones, but I absolutely love my Pixel 2. The newer mid-range Pixel 3a is quite nice, my friend has one, and it is close to my flagship-level phone.
I personally don't like the Samsung phones, but they are quality.
I use Samsung Galaxy.
I'll never go back. The s10+ is the best phone ive ever used.
Fuck them.

There's about a billion different apps you can do that with.
