Daniel Jones was an AAU basketball star

flycatcher : 6/15/2019 10:21 am
Link attached says he could slam dunk over 6’10” centers. We already know he’s a softball slugger as well. I heard he won the national lumberjack competition twice, and took the world arm wrestling title using his left hand.
Who is this guy really?

I gather DJ8 will somewhat routinely run for long 40+ yard TDs, which very few qbs in the history of the league are capable of. Seems to have that Cruz extra in game gear.

This can't be serious the guy is a 4.7 forty guy. He's a great athlete, but extra gear? Cmon. Mariota is two steps faster than him and he only has 2 TDs over 40 yards in his career.
I would bet most NFL players were great at all sports

and Bilas' son Anthony, who plays at Wake, was on that team as well. They've both said really nice things about Jones, more about just being a hard worker, warrior, good kid, etc... than specific athletic feats, but Jay thinks he could have played D-1 basketball, and even suggested he could have played at Duke, and Anthony agreed, sort of, saying he thinks Jones could have walked on in hoops at Duke.

4.67 actually and supposedly he can run faster. Josh Allen is a 4.75 guy and rushed for 631 yards including a 45 yard run this season. For all his straight away speed, Mariota has never had great instincts as a runner in NFL game situations. Jones seems more cut from the Allen cloth. A big athletic game who has a feel when to run which is why he is very dangerous.
He ran a 4.8 at the combine. Pro Days are notoriously faster than
Zeke's Alibi : 6/15/2019 3:18 pm : link
the Combine due to the slower track and using wind to the advantage.
Josh Allen is also much bigger than DJ.

DJ is about a 4.7 guy which sums up with his pro day.
Zeke's Alibi : 6/15/2019 3:25 pm : link
No way he is a 4.6 flat guy. I really like his athleticism, but hes straight line speed isn't otherworldly. It's very good for a QB though.
But can he do

The whole excitement about Jones's mobility and the idea
BlueLou'sBack : 6/15/2019 3:54 pm : link
that he will be running at times doesn't fire me up much. What fires me up, and was mentioned in detail by Turchyn in the podcast with Schneier, is that Jones excels at throwing on the run.

Turchyn said that he thinks "Jones throws on the run better than Kyler Murray." Murray apparently starts to run, then stops and plants and throws lovely accurate darts to all areas and lengths of the field. Jones actually throws on the run.

This is one reason I have mentioned Joe Montana as a watermark for Jones's upside. Montana excelled exactly at that - throwing on the run. And as a 4.7 guy, (which is quite different from Eli granted) you still want to put the ball in the hands of your guys named Saquon, Sterling, Golden, Evan, Corey, Cody, or Darius because all these guys run 4.5s or even less. Some less than 4.4s....

That's what fires me up: the threat of Jones running which make the guys who should be toting the rock come uncovered.

and for how quick he is it is pretty smart. He's probably going to take some big hits in the NFL though if that is how they want him to do it.

I would tend to agree (though of course don't know) that Murray was coached up to do exactly what he did - stop and square up and make throws as if he were in a pocket - on his improvisations or even designed roll outs. And Murray threw darts like that.

But Jones' throws on the run (as described by others) just hearken back to Montana. In the split seconds you have to "make plays" at the NFL level, that seems advantageous. Walsh's 49 offense under Montana often just consistently seemed to be ahead of the defense by those split seconds.

Obviously, that is an extremely optimistic view.

I agree with this. It’s not that you really want your quarterback taking off too much, the best impact his mobility could add(potentially) is hopefully a chance to extend plays outside the pocket. Buying extra time to make plays downfield is more dangerous for a defense worry about than the yards gained running. Although the ability to tuck and scramble to convert a 3rd down now and then would be a nice addition as well.
The other point made by Turchyn was how quarterback
BSIMatt : 6/15/2019 8:14 pm : link
Mobility can affect the execution of the screen game, which hasn’t been Eli’s strongsuit(based on watching him and reading complaints on BBI). Jones was excellent in the screen game using his feet athletically ability to move the launch point and throw an accurate ball.

Not quite. Daniel Jones beat Chuck Norris' head up one side and down the other. Even I was embarrassed for Chuck, and I don't particularly like the guy.

Yes, and it was a huge part of why Turchyn views Jones as an excellent scheme fit for PS's offense. I wish I had hard data to back it up, but I have the notion that PS LOVES to run screens, and did that at Minny 2 years ago with both his top RBs...

Which seems to be a part of the current love affair with Paul Perkins.
but has he ever dunked on Peyton

With his other sports is bizarre. Some of you guys are already married to defending DJ without seeing I’m play a single down of regulation football.

I don’t care if he can run a 9.7 100m dash.
I don’t care if he can dunk on 7’2 giants
I don’t care if he bowls 900

The only thing that matters is if he’s good at football
He's also phenomenal at beer pong
ChaChing : 6/15/2019 9:36 pm : link
The bball shot directly translates. His 6'5", 220 helps his high tolerance, and 4 years of college means he's up to game speed

Way better than Eli too
I like the fact he was good at bball
Coach Red Beaulieu : 6/16/2019 10:56 am : link
And is a natural athkete, certain sports translate, would like a TE who rebounds like Rodman. Or a lineman who was good at wrestling. Of course sports like baseball or curling doesn't really translate.

Finally we have basketball on grass.
A sport like baseball definitely translates to QB.
Zeke's Alibi : 6/16/2019 11:38 am : link
Actually most the undersized QB's were good baseball players. Probably need to be to develop the arm talent to compete with the guys that have natural longer leverages.
