I was just working on the finale of the "Moonlight", trying to iron out a few bars that were giving me trouble.

And I'm listening to the op. 131 link now - thanks for posting that!

I had a busy music day today - hearing:

1. Schumann - Manfred Overture
2. Shostakovich - String Quartet #8
3. Brahms - Piano Quartet # 3 (op. 60)
4. Beethoven - String Quartet in A minor, op. 132
5. Varese - Ionisation
6. Bartok - Concerto for Orchestra

Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto, Piano Concerto. His violin concerto is the piece I have heard live most often. It's a real workout for the soloist.

Mozart: so many, but I heard his best clarinet sonata with string quartet live about 9 days ago, and I always love it if the clarinetist has chops.

Yup. Any of his piano concertos. My favorite composer by a wide margin.

Hello Buff,

When I want to be humbled I take a shot at the
finale of op 106. Holy shit!

I'll add some more:

1: Bach - Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major
2: Grieg- Anitra's Dance
3: Bach - Toccata and Fugue in D Minor
Anything played by Vladimir

Horowitz or Alfred Brendel on the piano. Brendel's is a master of Beethoven and his entire collection of Beethoven's sonatas is extraordinary. Horowitz could create something playful like Chopin's Mazurka and then turn around and amaze with Mozart's Piano Concerto No.23 K.488, or Piano Sonata K.333. All of those are my favorites, but I'm also not ruling out Bruch's violin Concerto no.1 played by Itzhak Perlman.
And no opera? For shame!
Marty in Albany : 6/17/2019 8:04 am : link
BTW opera is the plural of opus.

Not sure how "back" I am. I lurk mostly, but the BBI craziness that drove me away the first time doesn't appear much better. I do love reading these kinds of threads though!

LOL. I don't claim to have piano chops sufficient to Beethoven's sonatas, particularly the Hammerklavier, but I do appreciate the understated comment you made about working on the Moonlight in the middle of a football message board. Gave me a chuckle.
