Aside from your children's college which is an 18 year saving endeavor;
What are you currently saving for? A down payment for a home? Dream Vacation? Home improvement??
Last year we had our basement finished. We converted one window to a door. The door leads to nothing. So we decided that our next project will be a new double deck. The rear of my house is 3 stories so a double deck would be great. Adds to the outdoor value of the home. My current deck is over 20 years old and needs to be replaced anyway so I figure a whole new deck is the way to go.
I want to have a roof over part of the deck so It can be shaded and protected from rain. I figure the starting point for the new deck will be 20 grand.
U?
The miles are the goal - ( New Window )

Good for you. Good luck.
It's just that all of that is harder than my actual job is.
Looks like we're pulling the rabbit out of the hat getting the kids through college debt-free, but beyond that, it's ALL going toward the grouchy old bastard I strive to become!

My daughter just got a graduate assistant job coaching lacrosse. 2 years of free grad school and a stipend. I'm picking up the car i just bought her tonight....
and hopefully they'll thank us for not hanging loans on them but i doubt it
2) Summer house that can become retirement house
3) Saving up Amazon cards for a smoker (I'm up to $450 bucks after several years of birthdays, xmas, fathers days)
So as far as saving now... it’s gone towards my kids post college life and saving a little here and there for upgrades around the house. My wife and I don’t make that much money compared to probably a lot here.... but our retirements will be well worth it.
Fuck that..Im not saving a penny for my death. When I die throw my body in a ditch in the woods and be done with it!
Seriously just cremate my body and spread my ashes in the ocean and I will be happy.
You know, I'm kind of thinking about that too. We just went camping and some of the RVs I observed were just incredible.

What smoker do you want? Weber Smokey Mountain 22 inch (I believe their biggest and most expensive model) is under $450 delivered on Amazon.
Are you looking for a Big Green Egg or some kind of pellet smoker that costs more than that?

Are the Komodo Joes any good? I like the Big Green Egg but they are soooo expensive and you have to buy all the accessories.

Not sure, I have the Weber and it's all I ever used. I did add an IQ120 to it to regulate the temp - per the advice of Peter in Atl (in fact all of my smoking advice comes from people on here like Peter in Atl, FMiC I think, and others), and that setup works fine for me.

We do European trips every year, sometimes two, plus short excursions.
Moral of the story, max out your 401k and any other retirement accounts that you can contribute to. Pay the house off early by paying extra on the P&I each month. I got a 30 year mortgage and was able to pay it off in 16 years...talk about savings. You can do the same with cars by paying extra each month.
I will only be looking at a Class C. I am not interested in driving a bus around the country. Here in Florida, you can buy a used one cheaper. Many retirees end up buying a new one and travel for a few years only to end up parking them when old age begins to catch up to them.

In 5 years, I plan on having my mortgage paid off. I would really like to travel and visit the numerous National Parks/Monuments.

Like section125 mentioned above, I have a 30 year that I have been paying ahead. I'm 12 years into the note and could pay it off sooner than 5 years. But I only pay 2.9%. While I will continue to pay it down, I've been setting aside some extra cash that I intend to use for the RV.

Now to miller, I have a Kamado Joe and it works great but if I had to do it all over again I'd buy a pellet smoker.
It's a great all around unit but I think there's better ways to cook over charcoal and there's better ways to smoke a brisket. I have roasted a 14 pound turkey in it a couple of times and no matter the weather you can pretty much load it up, light it up, and leave it unattended all day so that's nice.
CJAC, great news on grad school, congrats.
2. I sold a 3 inch Meade Refractor telescope during the Christmas Holidays and I am also saving for a new telescope. It's going to be computerized one and no less than 6 inches in diameter, and either a reflector, or a catadioptric (which I am leaning towards). Hopefully there will be some decent Black Friday deals for them.
3yrs of car loan left
Almost contributing to 401k max (company contributes 9%)
Maxing out Roth IRA
Year 2 of 30 yr mortgage for co-op left
Once the school/car loans are done, I’m sure that will all be replaced by kids/marriage if that ever happens (and then some)
11 years left on a 15 year mortgage. 2 houses on the property and I got renters covering 2/3rds of the mortgage & taxes( we split the internet, I cover water, electric metered separately).
Business on track(currently expanding, just hired first employee this past year and about to add another)
Savings/Investments pretty solid. Could be done by the time I hit 50, after that who knows?
Maybe buy another rental property, growing food truck scene in my town that could be fun, have a large workshop that I could set up a at home business from or store all of my shit in and rent out both houses and just go camping for a couple of years.
I am in Atl.
My neighbors added a roof to their deck along with replacing some boards and it cost 12K. replacing my deck will be 10-12 add a roof to part 10-12k and you get 20-25 based on the what you use..composite (my choice) or wood.
I hope you get stuck with a whole buinch of cash because you NEVER get cancer!

Daughter's wedding
Currently maxing out my 401k match program through work. Signed on with a financial planner within the last year which has been the best money I've ever spent as my children's 529 college savings plans have been setup as well as my life insurance plan should anything happen to me.
2 of my 4 items are being directly addressed and we're building equity in our home obviously and are in great shape there as well.
Daughter's wedding will be a big one. Have to come up with a good savings plan for that.

I'm still in the research phase. I want something that can be outside during spring->fall with a cover. I can't decide whether the ceramic kamado style is the way to go or if that's just fancy or if I just go Weber (I have a weber gas grill that's lasted forever) and I'm also interested in the pellet thing too.
The Weber has been good for you?
I've also waited because I know that shortly after the grill comes the need for all the accessories.
Any input would be appreciated.
Greg, we just did this trip in April. Same price range for the four of us to go there for 10 days. Best trip of our lives, thanks to a lot of great suggestions from posters on BBI. When my wife would ask me where I came up with an idea...I often would say “from BBI” lol. We used AirBnb (huge plus and cheaper than hotels). Rented a car and drove. You’d have a blast. Hope you get there.
