Really good listen on defensive schemes from BBV podcast.

With Mark Schofield, I found this fascinating as Schofield reviews the Patriots' use of multiple DB sets - typically 6 DBs - with only 3 down DL and 2 LBs.

Could this be the direction/aim of James Bettcher for the Giants?

The Giants invested a lot in DB's

2019: #1,#4,#6 pick, Trade for Peppers, signing of Bethea
2018: Beal in the supplemental

They also clearly like and are developling Haley and they have a ton of DB's on the 90 man roster - more then 3 strings worth of players IIRC.

So yes.
Excellent podcast

I believe they said based on some college (big 12?) 3/3/3/2 which we ranted about here over ten years ago. Not the college's, the 3/3/3, our rants.

Keeping in mind that some of your lbs might be more 4/3 end and some lbs more safety, and maybe one safety more a lb and etc. So the personel by unit doesn't always dictate the line up at snap.

It can play like a 5-0-6 or a 5-1-5, etc. 'like' 4-0-7 with a blitz from a safety, not by number on jerseys, but by how it appears at snap.

It's the increase in size of OL since the 1980s 3/4 days, plus proliferation of the passing game forcing a divergency within the 'line backers' by type.

Also pointing out how Betch can use what he has, as opposed to forcing the great end. We hope for the great edge, but there's stuff one can do.

Lawrence,Hill, Tomlinson, tight, one gapping, plus a lb on one additional interior gap, you should be able to force runs to the outside while generating interior pass rush.

Once outside hopefully our remaining 7 have speed.

Conversely, for QBs that get outside the pocket, and long down distance, inside out, Hill and Lawrence wide at (5?. 9?) And blitz interior gaps with lbs

I'll be happy. Use as many DBs as necesssary.

The classic lb is being phased out. It's the big 4/3 end olb rush type or a safety DB worthy type, or some unusual rare type.

I mean if you get a great, great, smart classic one, by all means, but...who

are becoming more important than push rush. If you have an elite pash rush and mediocre dbacks it can be neutralized by the prolific short passing game/athletic QBs. Flip the situation and guys that can disrupt the short passing game stick with their man long enough for a decent pash rush to get home seem to be more valuable now.
There was a lot of issues covered in that podcast.

One of the more interesting ones was the idea that the multi DB defensive personnel schemes are "daring the offense to run" with the idea being that most of today's offenses cannot run successfully, even when your "front seven" only has 4-5 true front seven players and the remainder of personnel are secondary types.

I think all three of the CBs selected by DG this year were known as very solid tacklers - at least Baker and Love have that rep strongly. I know less about Ballentine. Beal too supposedly is a guy at least willing to get his nose dirty vs the run game.

I also think it's not a strategy I'd advocate on 1st down vs the Cowboys, but perhaps against the Eagles and even the Redskins it could be a useful tactic. The Giants have certainly tilted their personnel in that direction.
It's 3 bigs you know are going

But then an additional bunch showing run blitz or blitz or etc, and it's hard to tell who is coming or going.

Carter is a neat swing piece in this context, but also the smaller Ilbs or safeties.

If ANY of the 11 on D simply has no pass D, even no basic zone pass defense at all, then he has to either be a really, really special situational pass rusher and or be big/strong enough to stack up a guard on rare occasion, rush from edge on occasion, but the legit way, or at least plug one gap.

I started to listen to this last week and got sidetracked

There was an updated BBV podcast posted yesterday where he interviews Schmeelk to wrap up minicamp, it was a really good listen. If you listen to the stuff about Barkley being used as a WR it's pretty damn exciting.(Schmeelk talking about seeing Barkely used on option routes on linebackers(like what Cruz used to do), where he has a two way go based on leverage and how linebackers looked completely overmatched, also a play where he was lined up wide and ran a slant on Janoris Jenkins and how Jenkins also looked in over his head 1 on 1 versus Barkley. I know it's unrelated to topic, but was related to podcast series so I thought I'd throw in another vote on listening to the podcast.

A couple of interesting side points came up in the interview with Schmeelk. 1) Apparently the Giants' PR guys like Schmeelk have a much better view of the action during all the OTA practices than the beats - and that may be WHY you've got Scmeeelk reporting on SB running option routes vs LBs and slants vs a much smaller CB... 2) Schmeelk is NOT nearly as much as a homer as I thought he'd be! He was really honest and forthright about his negative opinion of the Jones draft selection, admitting he thought he was a 2nd round prospect at best at the time of the draft, and in fact still isn't sold on Jones re how his practice skills will translate into game play.

That was honestly what I kept thinking while listening to him. He was a very good interview. He obviously has to come through a certain way for the stuff he does for giants.com.
