Solid defensive asset acquired. With this move I do expect they'll engineer one buyout probably Smith or try damn hard to pair an asset and find a trade partner for Staal.
the only downside of course is we dont have an extension in place, but I guess if they can't come to terms this season he's got tremendous trade value at the deadline (of course, we would rather he re-sign)
Well done by Gorton. But I still don't want to buy anyone out please.
The Winnipeg Jets really just traded a legit 25 year old top pairing defenseman for Neal Pionk and 26 games of Kevin Hayes
Sounds as if Trouba was refusing to extend outright with teams trying to trade for him and plans fully to go to FA next offseason. Jets leverage was very low. Rangers paid a rental price for one year.
If they sign him long term, good trade but hes apparently testing FA next year without question. He could get 9 -10m a year.
Had they waited they certainly would have gotten a better offer either by the draft or during. The Devils and Islanders were hot for him as well. The Devils have plenty of ammo that could have beaten that offer easily.
I hate to say it but that was a phenomenal trade for the Rangers.
The talent is accumulating and trouba is only 25. Why wouldn't he give a fair hearing to the Rangers about a long term deal? It's a NY original six franchise headed in the right direction with the #2 pick in hand. He'll be here a year and it's a first class organization with a lot of perks in and around town. I'd say it's at least 50/50 they lock him up even if he dips a toe into FA.
going after a rental player? Ive heard hes very likely to head to Detroit once hes a UFA?
If Rangers can extend him, its a really nice price.
If he doesnt sign by February theyll flip him for the first round pick back. It only cost them Pionk to make a run here - thats a no brainer. Good start for the JD - Gorton duo. ...i just dont want to read we are paying Girardi and Staal off our cap for the next four years now.
Rangers need to liquidate more D's both for Cap room
If hes balking at resigning then chances are he wasn't reupping with us. Nobody does. For that price though the Rangers did a great job. You guys probably have a better shot at convincing him to re-up
and so that guys like K'Andre and Nils don't refuse to sign when the time comes.
All the bad contracts, including frankly Hank, expire in two years. And buyouts next summer might make more sense than dead money for four years... I think we have to pay 3.6 mil on Girardi this year, for example. Its not a wise move for a team thats most likely not making the postseason this upcoming year.
great deal for Rags - does this take them out on Panarin due to cap?
the athletic had them projected to have about $11m in space prior to this deal so it would seem like there'd need to be a lot of dumping to get in on Panarin.
RE: Now I get why the Devs didn't pull the trigger

If that's the case then I am glad we didn't make the move but the Devils have the most cap space in the league and they could have made him a huge offer.

Stu, if the Devils re-sign Hall hopefully they will become more attractive to free agents with Hall, Hughes, Hischier, Palmieri, and Ty Smith.
But I agree that buyouts would be dumb. Are the Rangers going to win a championship this year? If not, why would you do a buyout and take away capspace from subsequent years in which presumably the Rangers would be a contender.
Rangers were NOT given permission to talk to or negotiate with Trouba.....
That's probably another reason why price was low. It's also somewhat irrelevant since--as others have said--he can likely be moved for a first at the deadline.
Trouba also has some issues so Im glad Rangers will get to see him up close before inking him to a huge deal.
Also, keep in mind that this means the Jets did not think he was worth a big contract.
Not to sound arrogant, but I can't see how Trouba doesn't re-sign here
A) It's New York City
B) We have a shit ton of cap space now and in the future (remember Henrik, Shatty, Staal and Smith are coming off the books in the next 2-3 years)
C) This team is really looking up with a young nucleus
Shattenkirk has the highest salary on the team outside of Hank and he really isn't that good. I'd much rather have that cap space back.
I don't really mind just riding it out with Staal. There's nothing we can really do with Smith. He has no trade value. We can basically just bury him in HFD and that's about it.
Shatty sucks in our zone, he wasn't a good point producer last year, and the cost:value ratio on him is probably one of the worst on the entire team. He was getting healthy scratched like a week into the season.
Just a terrible acquisition and contract. I can't wait until he's gone.

I think it's more that Trouba didn't want to be in Winnipeg. He expressed as much. Hell he requested a trade a couple of years ago before settling on a bridge deal.
Also nice to hear that Dallas and Zuccarelo have...
Hayes for ROS and Pionk for Trouba and Lemieux.
Someone call the cops
Great trade, gave up only the 20th pick in the draft as Pionk is a restricted free agent.
Waiting to see what Shero has up his sleeve for the Devs.
Lol!

haha... well that ignores the whole notion of a salary cap. Rangers fans certainly know that pain from 4-5 years ago (Hagelin, Talbot, Yandle, etc.)

Teams were allowed to negotiate with him during talks so I assume the Rangers are confident an extension will be agreed to.
Good point. Lowers the risk.

I really wish we could get Shattenkirk and his crappy contract out, but I don't want to go buyout route again.
I do think they'll get Trouba to stay here. But even if not, we can flip him for a pick and it won't set us back any.
JD era off to a good start.
Pionk sucks

Shattenkirk is the least of our concerns. I'd get rid of Staal and Smith before Shatty

There's talk that Trouba is determined to get to UFA. We'll see.

Hajek 21-Tony DeAngelo 23
Rykov 22-Fox 21
Lindgren 21/Reunanen 21
With guys like K'Andre, Lundkvist, and Keane
Hell of a future defensive corp
