WTF
Jay on the Island : 6/17/2019 7:50 pm : link
The Devils couldn't beat that?
Plus Neil Pionk
Phil in LA : 6/17/2019 7:56 pm : link
going to Winnipeg.
Awesome
JonC : 6/17/2019 7:58 pm : link
Finally got their D-man.
20th OA was Winnipegs original pick!
Giants in 07 : 6/17/2019 7:58 pm : link
So pretty much it was:

Hayes for ROS and Pionk for Trouba and Lemieux.

Someone call the cops
That's a good deal for the Rangers
Torrag : 6/17/2019 7:59 pm : link
Solid defensive asset acquired. With this move I do expect they'll engineer one buyout probably Smith or try damn hard to pair an asset and find a trade partner for Staal.
That's a great deal
NYerInMA : 6/17/2019 7:59 pm : link
Trouba brings a nice upgrade to the defense, especially if the Rangers can work out a long-term deal with him.
Wow awesome move by the Rangers and JD
JPinstripes : 6/17/2019 8:00 pm : link
The rebuild is officially in acceleration mode for NYR.

Great trade, gave up only the 20th pick in the draft as Pionk is a restricted free agent.
Or bury Smith
JonC : 6/17/2019 8:03 pm : link
.
I think Shatty
Phil in LA : 6/17/2019 8:08 pm : link
mgiht be the new coach down in Hartford.
Good trade by Rangers
Sammo85 : 6/17/2019 8:08 pm : link
Trouba will cost a decent penny now on a new long term deal and he may not be an elite two way guy but hes very solid both ends.

Waiting to see what Shero has up his sleeve for the Devs.

Interesting way to look at this deal....

The Winnipeg Jets really just traded a legit 25 year old top pairing defenseman for Neal Pionk and 26 games of Kevin Hayes
Good trade
KDubbs : 6/17/2019 8:13 pm : link
Im waiting for the Isles Glen Sather to actually do something. All my fellow fans tell me to trust the guy who hasnt won anything in many many years
terrific deal
MetsAreBack : 6/17/2019 8:14 pm : link
the only downside of course is we dont have an extension in place, but I guess if they can't come to terms this season he's got tremendous trade value at the deadline (of course, we would rather he re-sign)

Well done by Gorton. But I still don't want to buy anyone out please.

haha... well that ignores the whole notion of a salary cap. Rangers fans certainly know that pain from 4-5 years ago (Hagelin, Talbot, Yandle, etc.)

Sounds as if Trouba was refusing to extend outright with teams trying to trade for him and plans fully to go to FA next offseason. Jets leverage was very low. Rangers paid a rental price for one year.

If they sign him long term, good trade but hes apparently testing FA next year without question. He could get 9 -10m a year.

Why are the Rangers
Metnut : 6/17/2019 8:18 pm : link
going after a rental player? Ive heard hes very likely to head to Detroit once hes a UFA?

If Rangers can extend him, its a really nice price.
The Jets made a foolish move
Jay on the Island : 6/17/2019 8:23 pm : link
Had they waited they certainly would have gotten a better offer either by the draft or during. The Devils and Islanders were hot for him as well. The Devils have plenty of ammo that could have beaten that offer easily.

I hate to say it but that was a phenomenal trade for the Rangers.
If they can't extend him
Davisian : 6/17/2019 8:23 pm : link
He'll still be a great asset at the deadline
Thats a great pickup. Weve been after him for several years.
yatqb : 6/17/2019 8:23 pm : link
Sure better than Kreider and a 1st.

Teams were allowed to negotiate with him during talks so I assume the Rangers are confident an extension will be agreed to.
I think the Rangers will have a good chance to re-sign him
Torrag : 6/17/2019 8:24 pm : link
The talent is accumulating and trouba is only 25. Why wouldn't he give a fair hearing to the Rangers about a long term deal? It's a NY original six franchise headed in the right direction with the #2 pick in hand. He'll be here a year and it's a first class organization with a lot of perks in and around town. I'd say it's at least 50/50 they lock him up even if he dips a toe into FA.

Good point. Lowers the risk.
The Rangers will sign Trouba
JPinstripes : 6/17/2019 8:26 pm : link
This is our next McDonagh.
No downside here
Greg from LI : 6/17/2019 8:28 pm : link
Didn't give up much, could re-sign him or flip him for something else.
With the addition of Fox, Pionk was excess baggage too.
yatqb : 6/17/2019 8:31 pm : link
A kid who might be a top 4 defenseman if everything works out perfectly but could also be a bottom pair liability.
Now how to dump
XBRONX : 6/17/2019 8:37 pm : link
two of the three bad D contracts.

If he doesnt sign by February theyll flip him for the first round pick back. It only cost them Pionk to make a run here - thats a no brainer. Good start for the JD - Gorton duo. ...i just dont want to read we are paying Girardi and Staal off our cap for the next four years now.
Rangers need to liquidate more D's both for Cap room
Phil in LA : 6/17/2019 8:45 pm : link
and so that guys like K'Andre and Nils don't refuse to sign when the time comes.
Now I get why the Devs didn't pull the trigger
Stu11 : 6/17/2019 8:48 pm : link
If hes balking at resigning then chances are he wasn't reupping with us. Nobody does. For that price though the Rangers did a great job. You guys probably have a better shot at convincing him to re-up
So just reading up on spotrac
MetsAreBack : 6/17/2019 9:06 pm : link
Is he a RFA right now? Hopefully they can at least lock him up for two years since we have plenty of cap to absorb him this season

All the bad contracts, including frankly Hank, expire in two years. And buyouts next summer might make more sense than dead money for four years... I think we have to pay 3.6 mil on Girardi this year, for example. Its not a wise move for a team thats most likely not making the postseason this upcoming year.
great deal for Rags - does this take them out on Panarin due to cap?
Eric on Li : 6/17/2019 9:13 pm : link
the athletic had them projected to have about $11m in space prior to this deal so it would seem like there'd need to be a lot of dumping to get in on Panarin.

If that's the case then I am glad we didn't make the move but the Devils have the most cap space in the league and they could have made him a huge offer.

Stu, if the Devils re-sign Hall hopefully they will become more attractive to free agents with Hall, Hughes, Hischier, Palmieri, and Ty Smith.

Awesome. Really liking the direction we're going in here.

I really wish we could get Shattenkirk and his crappy contract out, but I don't want to go buyout route again.

I do think they'll get Trouba to stay here. But even if not, we can flip him for a pick and it won't set us back any.

JD era off to a good start.
That's an amazing deal
Anakim : 6/17/2019 10:09 pm : link
Trouba is a bona fide top-4 RD. Our depth is deep enough that we didn't necessarily need #20.

Pionk sucks
Why would extending him be a problem?
Anakim : 6/17/2019 10:13 pm : link
We could easily extend him. We don't even have to move salary to do it and frankly, aside from Panarin there's no UFA to really write home about.

Shattenkirk is the least of our concerns. I'd get rid of Staal and Smith before Shatty
According to Sportsnet...

Rangers were NOT given permission to talk to or negotiate with Trouba.....
Staal is a buyout candidate because of his low salary
Vanzetti : 6/17/2019 10:17 pm : link
in last year of contract.

But I agree that buyouts would be dumb. Are the Rangers going to win a championship this year? If not, why would you do a buyout and take away capspace from subsequent years in which presumably the Rangers would be a contender.

That's probably another reason why price was low. It's also somewhat irrelevant since--as others have said--he can likely be moved for a first at the deadline.

Trouba also has some issues so Im glad Rangers will get to see him up close before inking him to a huge deal.

Also, keep in mind that this means the Jets did not think he was worth a big contract.
Not to sound arrogant, but I can't see how Trouba doesn't re-sign here
Anakim : 6/17/2019 10:21 pm : link
A) It's New York City
B) We have a shit ton of cap space now and in the future (remember Henrik, Shatty, Staal and Smith are coming off the books in the next 2-3 years)
C) This team is really looking up with a young nucleus
.
arcarsenal : 6/17/2019 10:21 pm : link
Shattenkirk has the highest salary on the team outside of Hank and he really isn't that good. I'd much rather have that cap space back.

I don't really mind just riding it out with Staal. There's nothing we can really do with Smith. He has no trade value. We can basically just bury him in HFD and that's about it.

Shatty sucks in our zone, he wasn't a good point producer last year, and the cost:value ratio on him is probably one of the worst on the entire team. He was getting healthy scratched like a week into the season.

Just a terrible acquisition and contract. I can't wait until he's gone.

I think it's more that Trouba didn't want to be in Winnipeg. He expressed as much. Hell he requested a trade a couple of years ago before settling on a bridge deal.
Also nice to hear that Dallas and Zuccarelo have...
