Thought I'd start a thread for general NHL Draft discussion.
Date: 6/21
Where: Vancouver
The story of the draft so far is that American players are set to dominate the early portion of the draft.
Besides projected #1 Jack Hughes, I've seen as many as 6 of the top 10 projected as American players.
Who are they?
Hughes (C) projected #1, everyone knows him
Cole Caufield has been routinely called the "best goal scorer" in the draft. and he helped himself out in a major way at the U18's in April. I'm still leery of a 5' 7" NHL player, but Alex Debrincat (who Caufield is often compared to) maybe helped dissuade those concerns with his 40 G/76P season as a 21-year old.
Alex Turcotte, another American C, does everything IMO, he can score, play defensively, and is a good skater.
Trevor Zegras, has played W and C, not sure what he is in the NHL, oozes skill and manages to combine it with a hard nose style and good hockey IQ
Matthew Boldy, a LW, he might be my favorite non-Hughes American draftee, I see him as a Ryan O'Reilly type with how he approaches the game, so smart, so skilled, just not a C.
Spencer Knight, #1 rated goalie and if he goes this high would be a rarity, the NHL has moved away from 1st round goalies as a norm
other US notables:
Cam York (beast D, in the McAvoy mold)
Bobby Orr Brink (no shit that's his name) - maybe the sleeper of the bunch, loved his play at the U18's
Arthur Kaliyev, goal scorer? check. Not a great skater though. How then does he join Tavares, Stamkos, Skinner, and Debrincat as the only players to score 50 goals in the OHL in their 17/18 year old seasons? Can't argue with the stats, but he's a guy I'd really want to evaluate at the combone.
Alex Vlasic - a massive kid at 6' 6" at 18 years old and cousin to Marc-douard Vlasic, reminds me a little of the Samuelsson's last year (Ulf and Kjell's kids), need some work, but with that size it's not hard to envision.

As an Islander fan I'm hoping Lou trades Leddy for some extra draft picks in future years and then puts a $10.6m offer sheet on someone's 23 year old 60+ point forward. Unless they feel confident they can get Panarin, I'd rather pay the 2 first rounders and get a younger player and pay for as few years 30+ as possible. Marner is the guy everyone talks about but I think the Leafs will match anything on him, but offering on Laine, Point, etc. would put those teams in a real cap bind.
He's neck and neck with Hughes, but a very different player.
It's like comparing Patrick Kane and Jaromir Jagr.
The Canadians also have a major impact on this draft as you'd expect with the firs name probably off the board future top pair D:
Bowen Byram
Then they have 3 big centers in:
Kirby Dach
Dylan Cozens
Peyton Krebs
Dach is a tank, but lacks a little in the skating department. I could live with any of these 3.
Russia has one first round prospect.
Visali Podkolzin. His stock dropped post-U18's. He was projected #3 for a while. I like him, no idea about the disappearing act in the U18's, but not at 3.
Sweden has a couple, my favorite is D Filip Broberg. Best D at the U18's and a lesser Dahlin IMO. Might need to stay in Sweden another year.
My sleeper pick is Maxim Cajkovic from Slovakia. You want to find your Kucherov in the 2nd round, this is the guy I'd roll the dice on. But right now, he's all offense. I think he's projected to go in the 3rd.

Leddy to MTL is picking up steam.
Or just every defenseman to MTL is picking up steam.
This year is considered average overall.
Sometimes drafts are top heavy where the top 10 is great and that skews the opinions of people and I won't pretend to know almost anyone outside the top round or round and a half, but from writers I trust, they say this is an average draft. Which is good IMO, because most of these scouts/writers who would say that are always negative.
I've read for the cap space. Here is one blurb, unsourced by Dreger, so likely opinion.
Scrimmage & Stats: Darren Dreger on TSN 690 believes that it would take a team a draft pick or prospect for defenseman Nick Leddy as the New York Islanders need the salary cap space.
lol, I didn't type anything about Hughes or Kakko really, everyone who would read this thread is probably very familiar with them by bow.

I'm a big fan of Mackenzie Blackwood but it Spencer Knight falls to the 20's I hope the Devils package their first 2nd and either the last 2nd or a 3rd to move up to get Knight.
If Knight doesn't fall that far then I would love to see the Devils trade up for a defenseman or a wing if one falls.
An undersized but talented goalie who should be available in rounds 3-5 is Dustin Wolf. The Devils need to draft another goalie for the system because it is very thin at the moment with only Cormier and Senn as prospects. Neither is likely to be more than AHL depth so adding another prospect especially in the mid to late rounds would be ideal.
Almost peaceful in net and he's better handling the puck than some defenseman I've seen.
Goalie projection is so hard though, however Knight is a guy I'd make the exception for and take in the 1st.
On the left side they have Leddy, Pelech, Hickey, and Toews. Generally Pelech/Hickey were the 2 guys who alternated sitting in the booth but in the playoffs Pelech played well on the top pair with Pulock.
On the right side they have Pulock, Mayfield, and Boychuk - and Dobson is a RD.
Leddy's the guy that makes the most sense but his contract is actually very good so I'd hope he can return something in the ballpark of what Muzzin returned. 3 years left at $5.5m, through his age 31 year. He was their #2 D last year by ice time and points and he improved a lot defensively, but if they want to re-invest some money or assets into more scoring he's the guy they can afford to deal.
They could also deal Mayfield to open up a RD spot for Dobson but he's their best defensive defenseman and his contract is the biggest steal in hockey (4 more years @1.4m) so it would take a large overpay. His contract makes him uniquely sort of perfect for what a team up against the cap like Toronto needs but I personally wouldn't trade him unless the offer was insane.

Agreed, goalies are so hard to evaluate but Knight seems like a safer bet than usual. I've seen some reports that the Panthers will take him.

I was just reading some stuff about trades and the Senators traded Lehner and Ben Bishop. I didn't remember that.
Lehner they at least got a 1st, but Bishop maybe a 4th?
Goalies sometimes take a while to develop.
2019 NHL Draft: Consensus Last Minute Mock - ( New Window )
Zegras is a tremendous talent, outstanding playmaker with remarkable vision.
Kaedan Korczak, Ryan Johnson and Henry Thrun are three defensemen I have hopes for the the Second or Third Round.

Flyers continue to remake their defense, acquiring Justin Braun from the Sharks for 2nd round pick in 2019 and 3rd round pick in 2020. Sharks now have their first pick at No. 41, had been No. 91, third-to-last pick in 3rd round
Love him in MTL, but I doubt that happens.
MTL has their sites set more on an older, less mobile D (shocker) in Alex Edler.

Its not yet a done deal but PHI continues to work toward a long-term contract for pending UFA centre Kevin Hayes and, for now anyway, theres a sense of optimism. Stay tuned. Curious on the market value for Hayes. Six years at north of $6.5 million perhaps?

Yeah, there are a few teams with 10 picks, I expect them all to be active (as they can be).
I haven't read about Faulk (though he's always on a list of trade rumors - as are all CAR D) but with some steam I heard Dougie Hamilton could (will) be on the move again.
Another D I'd like in MTL, but I've read he's got a very quirky personality and doesn't fit in a lot of places. A hockey locker room (probably like most sports) is a tough place to crack.
I read WIN is the main trade partner right now and Nickolai Ehlers would be going to CAR and draft picks will be involved - not sure which way. I love Ehlers (when healthy) and think that would be a huge trade.
Some Devils "news" if you subscribe to the Athletic (best money I ever spent online)
The Athletics Corey Masisak (subscription required) lays out the possibilities on what the New Jersey Devils can do with their second-round pick (No. 34). With three second-round picks, the 34th pick is a valuable asset that could allow the team to trade into the first round or use to trade for a significant impact player to bolster its team. The scribe looks at past teams in similar positions, including a 2013 trade in which the Buffalo Sabres traded several players and the No. 31 pick for Ryan OReilly.

any news or rumors that you hear involving the Canes? I keep hearing that Justin Faulk could be moved. I know we have the 28th pick, but we also have 10 picks, the most of any team this year. I think some trades could be in the works.

I also read Hamilton to Toronto maybe for Nylander.
All speculation at this point, but I expect him to be moved.
I did just read the Canes approached Faulk for an extensions and want to get it done by 7/1, so I'd be a little surprised if he's traded. he was great in the playoffs, I expect he'd get some interest though. He and Slavin both looked good IMO.
Not sure I get this for either team, but maybe WAS wants to see Tom Wilson stay on the ice and out of the box and figures with Gudas someone else will rough it up a little.
I would imagine they announce on draft night as the ratings should be very good with all the excitement around the two marquee players Hughes and Kappo. As a NYR fan I can't wait until we are on the clock. #Kappo #IloveHughesAlso

Drouin?
LOl, wishful thinking.
2nd round pick and a prospect, maybe.
How bad is his contract?
@TSNBobMcKenzie
PHI and pending UFA Kevin Hayes are closing in on a multi-year contract with an AAV of around $7M. Term expected to be at least six years, perhaps seven. Prepare to take another UFA off the board.

I believe its 5.5 for 3 more years.
Hes still a strong pick moving D man
Jumbo Joe looked decent in the playoffs.
It's like he and Chara having a stare down to see who retires first.
Both heading into their 22nd seasons.
Thornton a few years younger.

Brock Nelson had a better season last year, more balanced 2-way player, and had a better playoffs IMO. Glad to see that the Isles extension is already proving to be better than the market.

7 years 50 mil (7.14/year) per Mckenzie
:)
And Hayes was really good last season. I'm not really sure what happened in Winnipeg, he was dropped down to the 4th line in the playoffs despite decent production (16 points in 26 games). But sometimes it's just tough to adjust in the short time after deadline deals. I wouldn't hold that small sample against him.
Point is, Philly definitely overpaid but not by that much IMO. I am a bit surprised to see him back with AV though. Never got the sense that those two had a great relationship.

LOL,. rough morning. Yeah, I had a men's league hockey game at 8:50, got home after 1am. burn off 1000 calories at hockey and drink 2000 after.
This is exactly the type of move the Devils should be making. I would do it for a prospect or a 2nd round pick this year or next to eat that deal. Or the Devils could acquire Colin Miller from Vegas and take on Clarkson's contract also to lower the asking price.

I used to do the same thing years ago. Hangovers get worse with age.
What position do you play?
