Thought I'd start a thread for general NHL Draft discussion.
Date: 6/21
Where: Vancouver
The story of the draft so far is that American players are set to dominate the early portion of the draft.
Besides projected #1 Jack Hughes, I've seen as many as 6 of the top 10 projected as American players.
Who are they?
Hughes (C) projected #1, everyone knows him
Cole Caufield has been routinely called the "best goal scorer" in the draft. and he helped himself out in a major way at the U18's in April. I'm still leery of a 5' 7" NHL player, but Alex Debrincat (who Caufield is often compared to) maybe helped dissuade those concerns with his 40 G/76P season as a 21-year old.
Alex Turcotte, another American C, does everything IMO, he can score, play defensively, and is a good skater.
Trevor Zegras, has played W and C, not sure what he is in the NHL, oozes skill and manages to combine it with a hard nose style and good hockey IQ
Matthew Boldy, a LW, he might be my favorite non-Hughes American draftee, I see him as a Ryan O'Reilly type with how he approaches the game, so smart, so skilled, just not a C.
Spencer Knight, #1 rated goalie and if he goes this high would be a rarity, the NHL has moved away from 1st round goalies as a norm
other US notables:
Cam York (beast D, in the McAvoy mold)
Bobby Orr Brink (no shit that's his name) - maybe the sleeper of the bunch, loved his play at the U18's
Arthur Kaliyev, goal scorer? check. Not a great skater though. How then does he join Tavares, Stamkos, Skinner, and Debrincat as the only players to score 50 goals in the OHL in their 17/18 year old seasons? Can't argue with the stats, but he's a guy I'd really want to evaluate at the combone.
Alex Vlasic - a massive kid at 6' 6" at 18 years old and cousin to Marc-douard Vlasic, reminds me a little of the Samuelsson's last year (Ulf and Kjell's kids), need some work, but with that size it's not hard to envision.

I want nothing to do with him
Jesse Puljujrvi requested a trade.
EDM wants an established 3rd line player in return.
Probably similar status to Yakupov IMO at this point, without the top pick pedigree.
He's been a bust, but he's 21, so someone will give him a shot.

NJ makes a lot of sense. They could offer Miles Wood in exchange for him.
I have to get back into it. I'm 38 and I played all through high school and into college but I haven't played in about 10 years. I was a goalie exclusively until college then I played some D and forward.
This is exactly the type of move the Devils should be making. I would do it for a prospect or a 2nd round pick this year or next to eat that deal. Or the Devils could acquire Colin Miller from Vegas and take on Clarkson's contract also to lower the asking price.
You can count me in on this for NYR as well.

Because Im old. My team is all in our 40s. Last night (its like this every summer) we played a team of 19/20 year olds. Its fun but humbling

I have a goal to play until I'm 50. It's actually more fun now than high school and college.

Definitely feel it into Wednesday's now, but It's just too damn fun.
I'll probably get the call on Friday. Maybe 4th round.

I might have to switch back to forward because playing goalie puts alot of stress on the knees and back. I do miss it and many of my high school teammates still play on a men's league team and they're always asking me if I want to join.
As you know it's just tough to find time with work, a wife, and two young kids.

I think the Rangers will be looking to add a big name like Panarin so they can't afford to take on Clarkson's contract if they want to make a significant signing in free agency.
There have been unsubstantiated rumors today that they are very interested. It makes a lot of sense assuming the price is right.
So funny, the rink I play in has 8 sheets of ice, but we still play at 10pm. The latest we have games is 10:50 and someone always has a mysterious "back issue" for those games. We call it 10-50-itis.
a lot of guys on my team have a goal to play at least one season with their sons, which is cool, I don't have a son, and no way I'd expose my daughter to the shit show that is beer league hockey.

God I'd love the Devs to jump on that. Makes too much sense though so it will probably never happen

Subban is constantly on the block, if I had to pick a favorite player in the league (as a person and player) it's him or Carey Price.
Seeing Carey and that kids whose mom died on stage at the NHL awards last night was pretty awesome.

Price is one of my favorite players after seeing all he did for that kid at such a difficult time in his life.
As for Subban, the Devils acquiring him would all but guarantee that the Hall re-signs with them. I just can't imagine the package that it would take to acquire him. I'm assuming it would start with Butcher/Severson, Vatanen, Coleman, Zacha, and probably a 1st and another pick.

Jay that package is way heavy. At 9 mill per the market is limited for him. Will take our #2's and a prospect or 2. Maybe Severson or Zacha. Dont see Coleman getting dealt

You're probably right I have no idea what his market value is. I have no issue dealing Vatanen as he is a FA at season's end and I don't see them bringing him back. I would prefer to keep Severson as he did improve last year and he is locked up on a solid deal.
I don't like giving up Butcher but if it gets us Subban I would be willing to do it with Ty Smith and Jeremy Davies signing their ELC's. Is Vatanen, Nashville's 2nd back, a 2nd in 2020, and Michael McLeod enough?

Doubt McLeod is of much interest seeing as his star has fallen. Vatanen would be an interesting piece there because it still gives them nice cap relief and a nice top 4 dman to help them continue to contend. The match just makes too much sense. The Devs have a gaping hole at #1 D and have the assets and tons of cap space to get it done. As a cherry on the sundae his deal has 3 years left and ends right around the time we'd have to pay up for Nico/Hughes

Subban has an amazing philanthropic profile. Reminds me of Jean Bliveau -- who was one-of-a-kind

That's true I just thought that with the pick and Vatanen they might be willing to roll the dice on McLeod who has a lot of speed and at worst he is a solid 4th line center. I'd be willing to give up more since Subban has 3 years left on his deal and he will be 33 when it expires. His performance should match his play over that period.
The Devils are in need of a legitimate 1st line right side defenseman. Severson is better suited as a second pairing defender as if Vatanen if he remained. The Devils are solid on the left side with Butcher, Ty Smith, Andy Greene, Jeremy Davies, and Mirco Mueller.
Butcher and Subban as the first pairing is exciting especially with two more offensive defensemen in Smith and Severson behind him.
Callahan story - ( New Window )
Rough news for a solid player
From your lips .....
Apparently Gorton has a sense of what it would take to sign him and that will be a major determinant. As well what they could get for him (perhaps including one of the 3 D vets they would like to unload).
OK Weird to reply to my own post, but consider this addenda:
Five @BadgerMHockey players have been invited to the World Junior Summer Showcase by USA Hockey: Defensemen Ty Emberson and K'Andre Miller, and forwards Cole Caufield, Owen Lindmark and Alex Turcotte.
Eight current #Badgers are drafted. Starting Friday, there could be up to five more. Watch on NBC Sports Network starting Friday at 7 pm CT.
(including Jack Gorniak, PJCAS)!
Haven't seen whether any team has been allowed to deal with Kreider on an extension.
2020 is supposed to be an awesome draft. Perhaps a 2020 first rounder will be the way to go.
Hope there is some drama (good drama).
Hope there is some drama (good drama).
The drama starts at pick 3 for the Hawks.
1.NJ - Hughes
2.NYR - Kakko
3.CHI - Zargas, Turcotte, Bryam or Dach?
Maybe they surprise and pick Caufield.
But I meant with trades, etc. too.
A lot of rumors swirling.
Never mind. Fake account.

I follow a ton of hockey accoubts.
the national guys (Friedman, McKenzie, Dreger, LeBrun, Pete Jensen, Gulitti, @NHL) and then local Canadiens guys (Potvin, Kramer, Engels, Arpon Basu, etc.)
other teams beat writers like Joe Haggerty and Kevin Paul duPont (though he's annoying), etc.
and then scouts.
Hughes wire to wire.
Like to see Caufield on here.

Kaako is the clear top winger in this class having progressed into a consensus #2 pick. Podkolzin had a strong WJC tournament but fell in May due to lack of production at the U18s. Caulfield/Brink/Leason/Tomasino have all risen over the back half of the season. #NHLDraft
Most people predict Finnish D Heinola at 15. I think that's early for him.
I'd rather they took Cam York if they go D.
LOCAL interest: Trevor Zegras, went to my daughter's HS (Fox Lane) as frosh before transferring to Avon Old Farms in CT. He's likely to go in the 1st Round, maybe.
NTDP U-17: 20 goals 59 points in 56 games
NTDP U-18: 26 goals 78 points
Fun night coming up all around.
My only issue with Zegras, and it's a little bit with Caufield too, is Zegras played a little bit with Hughes and Caufield played all year alongside Hughes.
Did Hughes lift them up?
I don't think so, but it's worth looking into.
Matthew Boldy too.
I don't think Turcotte played on a line with Hughes, but I think they played on the PP together, but being a C, I have less question on Turcotte.
Mostly it was Boldy, Hughes and Caufield, and Zegras/Boldy with some swapping back and forth to the Turcotte line.
