Thought I'd start a thread for general NHL Draft discussion.
Date: 6/21
Where: Vancouver
The story of the draft so far is that American players are set to dominate the early portion of the draft.
Besides projected #1 Jack Hughes, I've seen as many as 6 of the top 10 projected as American players.
Who are they?
Hughes (C) projected #1, everyone knows him
Cole Caufield has been routinely called the "best goal scorer" in the draft. and he helped himself out in a major way at the U18's in April. I'm still leery of a 5' 7" NHL player, but Alex Debrincat (who Caufield is often compared to) maybe helped dissuade those concerns with his 40 G/76P season as a 21-year old.
Alex Turcotte, another American C, does everything IMO, he can score, play defensively, and is a good skater.
Trevor Zegras, has played W and C, not sure what he is in the NHL, oozes skill and manages to combine it with a hard nose style and good hockey IQ
Matthew Boldy, a LW, he might be my favorite non-Hughes American draftee, I see him as a Ryan O'Reilly type with how he approaches the game, so smart, so skilled, just not a C.
Spencer Knight, #1 rated goalie and if he goes this high would be a rarity, the NHL has moved away from 1st round goalies as a norm
other US notables:
Cam York (beast D, in the McAvoy mold)
Bobby Orr Brink (no shit that's his name) - maybe the sleeper of the bunch, loved his play at the U18's
Arthur Kaliyev, goal scorer? check. Not a great skater though. How then does he join Tavares, Stamkos, Skinner, and Debrincat as the only players to score 50 goals in the OHL in their 17/18 year old seasons? Can't argue with the stats, but he's a guy I'd really want to evaluate at the combone.
Alex Vlasic - a massive kid at 6' 6" at 18 years old and cousin to Marc-douard Vlasic, reminds me a little of the Samuelsson's last year (Ulf and Kjell's kids), need some work, but with that size it's not hard to envision.
Draft order, post Trouba trade:

Not only did I see it when the Bruins drafted John Beecher in the first round, but I went to school and played ball with his Dad.

Crazy when you think some of the recent top picks that were US born and where they came from-Clayton Keller, Missouri, Hughes- Florida, Couturier and Tkachuck -Arizona, Auston Mathews, California. Devs have 2 guys from Texas. Hockey has really branched of to the sun belt.
I don't think any of the Hughes kids even put on a pair of skates in Florida. They were in Boston when they started skating but grew up in Toronto for a lot of their life.
The Tkachuk's and Keller grew up in St. Louis, which is maybe surprisingly or not, a decent hockey town for youth hockey.
Couturier grew up in Canada.
Matthews is IMO the anomaly, I believe he was born in CA, but moved to AZ early and played there until the USNDTP.
that is pretty amazing (and rare IMO).
80% of Americans in the NHL were born (not even grew up, born) in 9 states: MI, MN, MA, NY, IL, WI, NJ, CT and CA
It is expanding, and it's a good thing, just wanted to highlight born is maybe misleading.
Brian Leetch was born in TX, but moved to CT when he was 3 months old (for example)
And if he gets selected for main training camp he might go.
If a player goes to the main training camp (not dev camp) they lose their eligibility. He was drafted in the juniors, so like Nick Suzuki he could go to main camp get cut and play juniors a year or two.
I still think he goes to Wisco at least a year, but it was interesting to hear him say that. Confident kid.
I suspect he is eager to show up the team's that passed him up asap
Selfishly I hope he becomes a Badger

I read that Caufield thinks he can make the team.

His brother is on the team (Wisconsin) as will be Turcotte and Lindmark from his team this year (USNDTP U18).
I think he goes at least a year.
It would be cool to see Caufield (5' 7") with Sean Dhooghe (5' 3") on a line.
And let's not forget (for us Ranger fans) D'Andre Miller!
I will be scouring the net for Badger games LOL
I had season tickets for eight years in the glory days of Badger Bob, RIP

K'Andre
he's fun to watch.
When you are almost a PPG player as a college freshman on the blue line, you have offensive game.
still has more forward than defensive tendencies which is great in the offensive zone - he loves to join the rush, but I saw him lose his guy a few times in the D zone. He'll get it fixed and be a great NHL player.

I'm biased, but I think he'll get some good coaching at UW
It will be interesting to see what Davidson does with Hartford. Mike Eves just got tabbed to run Columbus' top farm team. I wonder if Davidson was involved in that? Eaves would have been an interesting choice.
LOL.
I'm sure he's a great coach.
Living in New England I'm surrounded by great college coaches. Providence, Umass, BU, BC, Quinnipiac, Northeastern, Harvard, Yale, even UNH and more.
but yeah, Granato is great I'm sure. Plus I like Bob Motzko a lot too and he left St. Cloud State for Min - I think they'll be good.
Hockey should expand their post-season tournament. 16 teams in a win or go-home tourney is so hard.
17 current Badgers are at NHL development camps this week.
Don't know how that compares with other teams, but it seems pretty impressive to me.

BU had 8 players taken in this draft. WISC had 7.
They probably have similar # of players in dev camp I'd imagine.
Hockey East had 27 players selected, by far the most for any NCAA conference.
"Quick thought: Caufield to Canadiens at No. 15 ... absolute steal. Tony Granato at Wisconsin is going to turn Cole into an even stronger, better player. And in case you forgot, he scored 72 goals last season."

they showed Brendan Gallagher meet Caufield at the draft (Gallagher is a Vancouver native), anyway, not many players can make Gallagher look tall.
Great clip though, Caufield was star struck and his smile never left his face. Who knows how his NHL career winds up but as a Hab, an american, and a good kid, I'll be rooting for him.

The Hurricanes traded defenseman Calvin de Haan and forward prospect Aleksi Saarela to the Blackhawks on Monday for goalie Anton Forsberg and defenseman Gustav Forsling.
And I like Charbonneau, but more worthy players than him.

Hearing the Hockey Hall of Fame will induct Hayley Wickenheiser, Vaclav Nedomansky, Sergei Zubov and Guy Carbonneau.
1:56 PM - 25 Jun 2019
Nice career, played on the edge and crossed the line occasionally, got the most out of his ability IMO.
Also stood next to Colton Orr who could end my life in 3 seconds.
Rangers drafted at least five Hall of Famers this weekend.
Solid weekend. pj sucks.

that sounds like a fun tournament. most of my tournaments these dats you can't have any pro experience, of any kind, they screen hockeydb to see if you do.
One of my teammates. at 43, got a contract with the Delaware Federals of the FHL - just for a two-game stint against the Cape Cod Blue Fins
Which is awesome. He can now claim he's been a pro hockey player, but now he can't play tournaments with us (at least those that screen for pros). Idiot.
but I'd do it in a heartbeat. He didn't even look THAT out of place. He did go to Union though, so he's not some hack.
Not unexpected, but savvy move by the Caps.

Love this for PIT.
No idea why Arizona would do this.

PO Joseph and Galchenyuk to Pittsburgh for Kessel and a 4th round pick.
7:49 PM - 29 Jun 2019
Kessel costs $3M more per year on the cap.
PO Joseph was a 1st round pick in 2017, solid D prospect.
Matthew Joseph's of the Lightning's brother.
Pens win this trade by a lot IMO, unless they are eating salary. Kessel is owed $18M on the cap, Galchenyuk is under contract for this year only for $5.8M.
Just my disdain for Kessel I guess. I don't see him changing anything in AZ, but at the same time I see nothing changing in PIT, and I think that speaks more about Galchenyuk than it does about Kessel.
We will find out.

Deal is official: James Reimer traded from Panthers to Hurricanes for Scott Darling, 6th. And Florida is buying out Darling.
Same here but I'm also a little nervous, rumors are the Canadiens will be doing something big. and they didn't buy anyone out (which I supported since no buyout made sense), so that means either trade or one of the 5 or 6 big name FA's.
I've heard Anders Lee, I prefer Duchene, but what they really need is D, I just don't want to pay Tyler Myers $7M+ per season b/c he's the tallest midget in FA among the available D.

Veteran goalie Mike Smith has chosen the #Oilers. Hes more or less trading places with Cam Talbot, who as we hinted on Monday, is heading to the #Flames.
More on what that means for Lehner, Mrazek, and the rest of the goalie market on @SportsCentre at 6pm ET.

I like it. I liked Shaw more than I thought, but he's absolutely expendable.

The Canadiens have acquired Chicagos 2nd round pick and 7th round pick in 2020, and the Blackhawks 3rd round pick in 2021, in return for forward Andrew Shaw and the Canadiens 7th round pick in 2021.

You were the one person I wanted to ask about this trade, since you know Galchenyuk.
From what I read, most feel he is like Kessel (lazy defensively, picky about where he wants to play, as in being a center) without the finishing ability or productivity.
From the sounds of it, sounds like PIT got good value given their situation, but that Galchenyuk either will do great and cost too much to re-sign OR the Pens will have his cap space the following season.
What do you think about Galchenyuk?
He should have and would have been the Conn Smyth winner in 2016, except the Toronto/Canadian media had a grudge.
That said, his act wore thin, didn't want to play on 3rd line, only with Malkin and his bad defense rubbed off on Malkin.
Also, some feel he is losing his scoring ability and will not age well.

loves the trade for the Coyotes, not so much for the Pens.

What do you think about Galchenyuk?
I love Galchenyuk, and he's absolutely a finisher, it's his asset, wicked wrist shot, sick one-timer, he should be the power play shooter.
But yeah, he's been bad defensively, and slow to learn, so coaches like Julien and Therrien buried him.
Very eager to see what Sullivan does for his game.
I don't think he's a C, so I'd play him next to Crosby and slide Guentzel to the Malkin line, Alex may be the most skilled winger to play alongside Crosby if they do that.

That would make no sense.
I don't see why Panarin would split with Bob, and why he would chose NYI, when he can be with coach Q tax free in FLA.

thinks speculation is looking like Panarin to NYI and Bobo to FLA. Would be fucking awesome if true. Please happen!
That would make no sense.

Because even with Bob and Panarin, Florida is not a playoff team, Islanders are. Not to mention Barry Trotz is no slouch of a Head Coach and New York is more media exposure than Florida.
