NFT: NHL Draft Thread: Draft is Friday

pjcas18 : 6/18/2019 9:12 am
Thought I'd start a thread for general NHL Draft discussion.

Date: 6/21
Where: Vancouver

The story of the draft so far is that American players are set to dominate the early portion of the draft.

Besides projected #1 Jack Hughes, I've seen as many as 6 of the top 10 projected as American players.

Who are they?

Hughes (C) projected #1, everyone knows him

Cole Caufield has been routinely called the "best goal scorer" in the draft. and he helped himself out in a major way at the U18's in April. I'm still leery of a 5' 7" NHL player, but Alex Debrincat (who Caufield is often compared to) maybe helped dissuade those concerns with his 40 G/76P season as a 21-year old.

Alex Turcotte, another American C, does everything IMO, he can score, play defensively, and is a good skater.

Trevor Zegras, has played W and C, not sure what he is in the NHL, oozes skill and manages to combine it with a hard nose style and good hockey IQ

Matthew Boldy, a LW, he might be my favorite non-Hughes American draftee, I see him as a Ryan O'Reilly type with how he approaches the game, so smart, so skilled, just not a C.

Spencer Knight, #1 rated goalie and if he goes this high would be a rarity, the NHL has moved away from 1st round goalies as a norm

other US notables:

Cam York (beast D, in the McAvoy mold)

Bobby Orr Brink (no shit that's his name) - maybe the sleeper of the bunch, loved his play at the U18's

Arthur Kaliyev, goal scorer? check. Not a great skater though. How then does he join Tavares, Stamkos, Skinner, and Debrincat as the only players to score 50 goals in the OHL in their 17/18 year old seasons? Can't argue with the stats, but he's a guy I'd really want to evaluate at the combone.

Alex Vlasic - a massive kid at 6' 6" at 18 years old and cousin to Marc-douard Vlasic, reminds me a little of the Samuelsson's last year (Ulf and Kjell's kids), need some work, but with that size it's not hard to envision.

thinks speculation is looking like Panarin to NYI and Bobo to FLA. Would be fucking awesome if true. Please happen!

That would make no sense.
I don't see why Panarin would split with Bob, and why he would chose NYI, when he can be with coach Q tax free in FLA.

Because even with Bob and Panarin, Florida is not a playoff team, Islanders are. Not to mention Barry Trotz is no slouch of a Head Coach and New York is more media exposure than Florida.

Whats the breakdown in attendance for both?
Bob to Florida
pjcas18 : 6/30/2019 7:36 pm : link
makes sense, they have no goalie right now and a lot of cap room.

I think Florida
pjcas18 : 6/30/2019 7:41 pm : link
is a borderline playoff team with Bob and Quennville.

even without Panarin.

Barkov is on the cusp of stardom, if he's not there yet.

Ekblad is a little weak for a #1 overall, but he's a solid top pair D (and is still just 23) along with Mattheson, Yandle, etc.

Trochek, Huberdeau, Dadanov..they have some good players.
I'm hoping Isles drove up the price on BOB enough to get Panarin
Eric on Li : 6/30/2019 7:51 pm : link
that would be a huge coup. Barzal + Panarin + Trotz plus a very good defense is an excellent foundation to build on. Especially if they could also bring back Lehner.

From what I hear, these will be confirmed tomorrow Duchene-Nashville, Bobrovski-Florida and Pavelski-Dallas. Habs will present an offer sheet! De ce que jentends, ce sera confirm demain, Duchene-Nashville, Bobrovski-Floride et Pavelski-Dallas. Le CH prsentera une offre hostile

yeah Bob to Florida is as close as we have right now to a mortal lock.
If Pavelski does go to Dallas
Stu11 : 6/30/2019 8:19 pm : link
That probably free's up Zuccs. I bet the Devils get in on that and/or Lee if the Isles sign Panarin

I think Pavelski to Dallas means no Zucc to Dallas.

Looks like Joe Pavelski will sign a three-year contract with Dallas tomorrow. Sounds like the AAV will be in the neighborhood of $7M.

It's a 5 year deal for Zuccarello with an AAV of $6 million. That's too long for me.

Interesting

I think NJ will be busy tomorrow. A lot of agents think theyre a prime candidate to put out an offer sheet or two. https://t.co/KZhsimnMd9

Gord Miller (@GMillerTSN) June 30, 2019

They can apparently shift the compensation to a year later if theyre missing a pick, or so its been rumored.

Tyler Kelley (@DocKelley41) June 30, 2019
Quite a few offer sheet candidates
pjcas18 : 6/30/2019 9:04 pm : link
compensation is heavy (I believe it's 2 1sts, a 2nd and a 3rd) if the offer sheet is over $8M per, which for the guys I'm talking about it would be, if it goes over $10.5 it costs 4 1sts.

but would you give that up for:

Aho?
Point?
Marner?
Rantanen?

I say yes to all 4 (under 10.5). They're all 23 or younger and already stars.

Matthew Tkachuk?
Timo Meier?
Brock Boeser?
Charlie McAvoy?

Laine? I think he's eligible.

not sure. but I'd think hard about it.

Preds and Habs
pjcas18 : 6/30/2019 9:13 pm : link
in on Lee.

Habs and possibly Wild in on Gardner.

two solid players, but will get overpaid.

Hope Bergevin sets a line and won't cross it.

I agree with you if it's under 10.5 for all 4 of those players without thinking twice. I would do it for Laine also.

Confirming Duchene to #Preds $8m for 7 ... hearing #CBJ offered Duchene more than $8 mill/year. That one, however, was always going to be an uphill fight.

Duchene is apparently building a house in Nashville & talked openly about liking that city/area a lot.
Adding a 27 year old elite
Metnut : 6/30/2019 10:09 pm : link
talent for just cap space isnt something a lot of teams have a chance to do. Isles have to go all-in to get this done. Im fine with $13M AAV.

Perry and Pavelski added to Benn, Seguin, Radulov....with Bishop and that young D core and the young forwards.

Stars moving up to West Conference favorite by winning July.
