The Giants' cap space is at $9M, according to the NFLPA database. The signings of Dexter Lawrence and DeAndre Baker ate $3M in cap space. Daniel Jones and Oshane Ximines will eat another $4M when they sign, leaving the Giants with about $5M in their reserve fund for the season.
This can still change, right?

Depending on who makes the team? I don't expect many vet cuts, but wonder about someone like Ellison, maybe Dixon?
Hard to see the Giants adding interesting camp cuts unless they

1) they restructure Ogletree
2) cut Rhett

NO way they restructure Ogletree. He's going to probably get cut after this season, and they don't want accrue more costs to do so.

Rhett, is probably going to be cut, it seems like we have a couple of 2 way TEs that could replace him waiting to get in.

I agree with Rhett. If Conrad has some block in him, Rhett is expendable.
really looking forward to 2020

Depth is key. Its how good teams stay good. If we can build a certain philosophy + culture, then reloading on the talent that fits is going to likely net better results than just getting the best guy available.
Our salary cap situation...
M.S. : 6/18/2019 11:07 am : link

...still sucks.

But so what?

That'll change post-Eli.

For now, I'm just hoping our O-line lives up to just 1/10 the optimism generated on BBI. If that happens, Saquon Barkley is gonna be the worst nightmare for opposing defenses!

Better drafting will lead to fewer holes that have to be filled in free agency, particularly with average talent at premium prices.

In 2020, I'd like to see the Giants target a couple of free agents who could start (say, at ILB and FS), who will not doubt cost a lot, but then spend the bulk of their free agent cash to upgrade their depth across the board.
This year is about developing the young guys
Jan in DC : 6/18/2019 11:20 am : link
and treading water until the cap situation is back in order. I think the push to be competitive happens next year and as soon as they traded OBJ that was fully the plan.

Maybe Tanney cut if they run two QBs. Would save us about 1 mil on the cap.
$6m or so is about the minimum you want to go into a season

Rhett is not getting cut.

If Conrad is a player then SIMONSON is expendable. Ellison is a better blocker and receiver than Simonson. Not that Ellison was nearly the blocker we were told he was but he is good and he is a better receiver than advertised. Plus, Shurmer loves him. Ellison isnt going anywhere.

Ultimately it's DG's call. I actually think Simonson was the better blocker...

I don't think that's true. They can survive on $5M. I think $3M is the number you don't want to drop below. If you're running out of space come December due to guys landing on IR, there will be players whose deals can be restructured, but given that IR'ed players are generally replaced with rookies from the practice squad, it would take a lot of season ending injuries for that to happen.

p.s.--Veteran cuts from other teams that sign on this late in the process usually sign for vet minimum. It's only the rare cap casualty that goes for anything significantly more than that and I don't think the Giants will be the landing spot. There may be some changes at the bottom of the roster, but like it or not, the 2019 starters will come from the group of talent currently on the roster.
On the other hand...
Milton : 6/18/2019 12:47 pm : link
It's been years since I paid attention to the minimum much cap space teams like to keep in reserve. So maybe the formula has changed. It used to be only a couple million for the teams that were bumped up against it.

A couple of the beats I listened to on a podcast recently - Dunleavy and Lombardo - speculated DG will make at least one more move to open up about 3 mil more cap space. They suggested Kareem Martin as a possible target if Golden, Carter, and the X-man look capable of handling all the edge snaps. To me that's dangerously thin at OLB/END, but what do I know?
One more thing...
Milton : 6/18/2019 12:48 pm : link
I think if Ellison was gonna be a cap casualty, they would've cut him a long time ago. I doubt that CJ Conrad is going to force him off the roster.

Maybe in 2020 CJ Conrad pushes Ellison off the roster. Not this year.

Agreed. At this point it is not likely that there is going to be someone exceptional that is cut that we can't afford with the contingency budget and we will net some additional money if UDFA's knock veterans off of the roster because cap is just the Top 53 guys plus dead money.
can always roll 2020 excess

to 2021.

One does not have to spend everything in their pocket, just because it is there.
The cap situation is exactly as expected
JonC : 6/18/2019 2:42 pm : link
given the turnover since DG took over. Great cap shape in 2020 and beyond, when they hope to contend.

How does that work?

Let's say the avail cap is 90 and 100mm 20/21. Assume they spend 40mm in 20 with the same cap spend in 21. So they don't spend 50mm in 2020. Is the avail cap now 110 in 2021?
Mike in NY: Not sure I follow your ‘top 53 guys’ reasoning.

In-season, everything counts: roster players, IR, practice squad, dead money. Everything.

There is a formula that calculates a percentage of the unused space, you don't get all of it. On top of that, there is a max amount you can roll over. I don't know the details though...

There is no max amount that can be rolled over. Teams can roll over what is left over at the end of the year. Whether that changes for the next CBA, who knows. But there is no roll over limit.
With all that cap space
NephilimGiants : 6/20/2019 8:04 pm : link
I hope we get rid of Kareem Martin and bring in real pass rushers and a RT. With deep WR draft id stick with Tate Shep Slayton and pick up a 1st round WR...NY Giants 2020 is going to be start of a whole new era, hopefully for the good
