ZogZerg : 6/18/2019 12:08 pm
by travel miles, Jets have it easiest.

Looks like Raiders will travel about 4 times further than the Giants.

1. Raiders: 32,023* (1)
2. Rams: 29,974* (3)
3. Chargers: 28,262** (2)

5. 49ers: 25,512 (4)

I'm surprised the Jets have it easier than the Giants

Since the Giants are nominally the "road" team in their regular season game against the Jets this year. On top of having a relatively easy travel schedule this season, the Giants only have seven true road games.

wont leave the Eastern time zone
I remember I noticed this when first looking at the schedule

how little traveling the Giants really have to do. Absolutely puts them at an advantage, especially having only 7 true road games and not even having to fly very far for those.

It's nice that they get the longest trips out of the way in the first few weeks. Dallas and Tampa in weeks 1 and 3, and then after that they are basically within train/driving distance of all their games (aside from Chicago and Detroit). I have to imagine long trips are much worse when it's late in the season and the season is starting to take a toll on your body.
30,000 miles is some serious air time

Giants: Dallas, Tampa, Chicago, Detroit is the 8000 miles.

This highlights why West Coast teams struggle to get to the Super Bowl. If a team gets to the playoffs, home field thru the playoffs is almost a necessity for west coast teams.
The Jets did catch a break with the sched

Playing the NFC east. Philly, Wash, Giants is not covering many miles at all. Dallas is coming to Jetlife Stadium so no trip to TX. We go to Baltimore. Again hardly anything that qualifies as serious travel.

From the first pre season game until Week 7 the Jets biggest trip is Atlanta...for the 2nd pre season game.

West coast teams

do the most traveling.

Only makes sense to give them more primetime games (home or away) and less 10 am/1 pm starts.

The west coast team doesn't need the top seed necessarily...

Ideally a first round bye hosting the divisional game is enough to get the job done. Then you have 1 road game at worst.

The Harbaugh Niners made the NFCC 3 straight years, first as a #1 seed, then #2, then #5 (beating Green Bay in frigid temps, then at Carolina, before a tight one in Seattle).

The Seahawks on the other hand needed the #1 seed in each of their 3 Super Bowl appearances, not a surprise.

The closest we've ever seen a west coast team go to the super bowl winning two east coast playoff games were the '89 Rams.

That year they beat the Eagles and Giants on the east coast before giving the 49ers a tough first quarter at Candlestick. No other west coast team to my knowledge has won the wildcard and divisional games on the east coast, unless you cant the 2013 49ers playing in Green Bay.

Also I imagine it's theoretically possible in the modern NFL for a west coast team to play 3 road games on the east coast - two from one division and one from another.
