Lookin at markus golden a bit, can win w/high motor, feet that don't stop and understanding of the rush. Running an E-T stunt w/2i rucker, disrupts solidly as the Driver, then good vision to cut off escape lane and twitch to close/finish

Nick Turchyn (@Tmanic21)
6/17/19, 6:20 PM
The '16 Cardinals DL had Jones, Campbell, Okafor, Golden, Martin and a lot of aggression. Simple internal stunt here and Golden redirects nicely keeping his legs churning and splits the sack w/Okafaor w/a long arm to rip vs. Trent Brown

Nick Turchyn (@Tmanic21)

Bettch put Golden in the stacked LB'er in sub (played RB/LB in HS), seems the more space/speed he was allowed the more effective he was. Long sticks around the corner and finishes on QB Ryan. Think these interior stunts can be very effective w/rookie Lawrence as 0t

King FMIA: FMIA Guest: PFF On How Data Is Changing NFLs Present And Future

Five players who could end up in the PFF 50 next year

Jon Halapio, C, New York Giants:The Giants are revamping their offensive line in a major way, but one of the unsung components of the rebuild is at center, where Halapio could emerge as a foundation piece to the new-look front. He began last year as New Yorks starter before going down with an injury after just 116 snaps of action. But in those snaps, he didnt allow a single pressure, despite almost 50 pass-blocking snaps against the Jaguars and their array of pass-rushing weapons. With vastly improved players beside him, Halapio could prove to be a significant upgrade as a player who isnt being talked about much heading into 2019.

Trapasso CBS Sports: 2020 NFL Draft fits for NFC East teams: Players to watch this college season who'd be ideal need-fillers

New York Giants
Biggest need: Receiver
Ideal fit: Texas WR Collin Johnson
Johnson had 985 yards in 2018, which represented just 27.2% of Texas' receiving-yard market share, but the towering, high-point master is line to see a large jump in that percentage in 2019 with Lil'Jordan Humphrey already off to the NFL.
Humphrey made a few ridiculous grabs last season for the Longhorns, and overall was more productive -- he accounted for 32.5% of the team's receiving yards. But Johnson reeled in more difficult grabs in traffic. Per Pro Football Focus, Texas passers combined for a 140.0 quarterback rating when targeting Johnson on deep passes (throws made more than 20 yards down the field) in 2018, the best figure among all receivers in the Big 12.
The 6-6, 220-pound Johnson has smooth athleticism for such a tall receiver. This snag against USC last season illustrates his fluidity as a route runner and his rebounding expertise:
From his time in Minnesota with Stefon Diggs, Giants head coach Pat Shurmur could love the idea of drafting a small, super-speedy, route-running stud like TCU's Jalen Reagor. But New York's GM Dave Gettleman seemingly likes bigger wideouts in the draft. He selected Kelvin Benjamin in the first round of 2014 and traded up for Devin Funchess the next year.
Also, with Sterling Shepard and Golden Tate on the roster, the Giants could conceivably feel another slot-ish type would be redundant for 2020. Although Tate will be 32 next season, he can't realistically be cut until 2021. Shepard, only 26, is under contract through 2023.
Johnson would complement both of those receivers well on the outside for New York and would give the team an intimidating matchup option for whoever is throwing passes for the Giants in 2020 and beyond.

Harry Stafford HB UDFA-Texas 1934 NYG 1934 Born 6-18-1912 Died 11-23-2004

Obituary

Harrison Stafford, one of only 14 Longhorn players or coaches to be inducted into the National Football Foundation's College Hall of Fame, died early last week at the age of 92 in East Barnard.

Stafford had lived and ranched near Edna, Texas, for most of his life.

He was, by all accounts, one of the toughest football players in school history. Yet he was well-rounded enough to also serve as a member of the UT Student Assembly.

Stafford came to Texas unannounced in the fall of 1929, and volunteered for the freshman football team in his first year. Assistant coach Shorty Alderson spotted him and put him through a workout.

Then, he went to head coach Clyde Littlefield and reported, "Clyde, I found you the darndest football player you ever saw. He tore up a couple of dummies and hurt a couple of men. He says his name is Harrison Stafford."

With that, Stafford delivered his calling card.

In a practice against the varsity, the Longhorns' star running back, Dexter Shelley, ran an off-tackle sweep, made his cut and then started to break to the outside.

"Stafford hit him and just unglued him," said Alderson, as reported by historian Lou Maysel in his book "Here Come the Texas Longhorns." "I went over to Dek and he looked up at me dazed and said, 'who in the hell was that freshman? I've been playing football for nine years, and that's the hardest I've ever been hit in my life.'"

"He was such a man," says Bill Sansing, Texas' first Sports Information Director who saw Stafford play when he (Sansing) was a kid. "He was big, sweet and nice, but he was built like wound up steel wire."

Stafford never accumulated a bunch of statistics, but it was as a blocking back and a tackler that he would earn his fame.

"He was a ferocious blocker," said Sansing. "For years, they would tell the story of a TCU game where Johnny Vaught (who later would become famous as the head coach at Ole Miss) was trying to get in position to tackle Bohn Hilliard. Vaught was a two-time all-American. When Stafford hit him, he leveled him. After that play, whenever people talked about a block, that talked about 'the Vaught block.'"
With his teammate, Ernie Koy Sr., Stafford helped rebuild the tradition of Texas athletics. In an era which also included Charley Coates, Hilliard and Jack Gray, Littlefield's football team became the best of its time. With Koy and Stafford as sophomores, the team carved an 8-1-1 record and won the Southwest Conference in 1930, and finished 8-2 in 1932.
Stafford also participated on Littlefield's track team. His senior season, he was named the Most Valuable Player in the Southwest Conference by the Houston Post, and was picked on the Associated Press' All-American second team in a time when they only named 11 players to the first team. He also starred in the East-West Shrine game in San Francisco.
After his senior year, Stafford received an appointment to the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, but stayed for only a year before playing a year of professional football with the New York Giants in 1934. An knee injury ended his football career.
Stafford returned to Texas, where he ran a drug store and ranched near Edna, Texas.
He was one of the first dozen people inducted into the Longhorn Hall of Honor, earning enshrinement in 1959, and he was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1973.

Summer of 1971

(1) Fran Tarkenton walks out
(2) Dick Shiner promised starting job
(3) Patriots opening new stadium with exhibition game vs the Giants
(4) Tarkenton returns

NYT 8-12

After a 2 hour meeting with his boss that ended near midnight, Fran Tarkenton tonight accepted the same contract he had found unacceptable last Sunday night, when he walked off the New York Giants club.
Tarkenton, who usually is tightly controlled, came out of the meeting and said quietly and nervously, I'm very, very sorry it had to go like it did. At the time I left I thought it was right . . . Heck, how many times do we do things we think are right and they're not? I admit it was a hasty move.
In sharp contrast to Tarkenton, Wellington Mara, the owner of the Giants, stood erect and even managed smile. He emerged as the strong man in the dispute, one of many that have cropped up around National Football League training camps this summer.
Refused to Budge
Mara had refused to budge on the $125,000 contract offer he had made last Sunday in Houston, on the eve of the club's first preseason game against the Oilers.
Tarkenton, who received $100,000 last season, returned to New York after the meeting, but planned to be in uniform tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock at the club's workout.
Tarkenton is one of the league's outstanding quarterbacks and has many outside business interests. He had wanted a loan as a tax shelter in addition to salary.
When his demands were refused, he told Mara he was returning to his home in Atlanta, but asked whether Mara needed him to play against the Oilers the following night, Mara said No.
Tarkenton left without saying goodbye to his teammates. They were trounced by the Oilers, 35& #8208;6. During their workouts yesterday and today they were flat, as though still bewildered by what probably was the most significant playermanagement clash in the team's 46 year history.
Tarkenton apparently was bewildered by the firm stand that Mara took. It is likely he didn't expect to sign tonight he had left his luggage at a hotel in New York. He had lunch earlier in the day at the 21 Club with Senator Fred Harris of Oklahoma, and then taped the Dick Cavett Show.
During a break in tonight's talks, when Mara went out for a can of beer, Tarkenton phoned his lawyer in Atlanta. The quarterback signed a few minutes later.
Subject to Discipline
Fran will be subject to disciplinary action at the discretion of Coach Alex Webster, said Mara, immediately after he announced that Tarkenton had agreed to terms.
It was exactly what I offered him last Sundayno more. It's for one year. We think that's the fast way to operate.
The only time Tarkenton smiled during the postmeeting discussion with newsmen was when he was asked wnether there was a loan agreement in the contract.
No, no loans, he said. But we agreed that next year we'll start talking contract after the Super Bowl game in January.
The squad's next game is Sunday night against the New England Patriots at Foxboro, Mass. I'll be happy to play Sunday, Tarkenton said.
The quarterback said he realized nis departure had caused a disruption on the team.
I appreciate the fact that Wellington understands the idiocyncracies of ball players, he added.

(5) Patriots coach reveals Shiner wont start
(6) Shiner walks out

Regarding Shiner, the No. 2 quarterback who walked out Saturday, the situation was this:
The Giants have until 4 P.M. today to recall the waivers they asked on him Friday, and which were made public by John Mazur, the New England coach. As of yesterday after noon, no team had entered a claim; but in any case, the Giants will exercise their recall privilege.
They will then try to get whatever they can for Shiner from a bad bargaining position. Coach Alex Webster, desigmated as the proper Giant offi cial to talk to Shiner, said yes terday he probably wouldn't get around to it until today. Under the circumstances, no one is going to offer the Giants much for Shiner because it is too clear that he can't very well stay here, but the Giants simply won't let him become a free agent. They hope to sal vage some trading value.
That leaves Ed Baker as the No. 2 quarterback at the moment. He played the first half, which ended with the Giants trailing, 13 7 on Sunday, and there was nothing con clusive about his performance. It certainly wasn't encouraging but the whole Giant backfield has been so disorganized and under practiced that he can't be blamed for everything.

Although he didn't know whether he would be in that role when the Giants play in Atlanta Sunday Berry is healthy again and conceivably could play Shiner spent a few minutes yesterday discussing his situation with the Giants and their No. 1, Fran Tarkenton.
Alex Webster didn't want to trade me and I don't think he would've if I had stayed there, the 29 year ;old Shiner said by telephone. Even though he put me on waivers, I don't think he was going to listen to any offers for me.
I think he did it just to please me for a little while and let me know that at least he made an attempt. He probably figured I would just forget about it in time and let it go at that.

Shiner's last request to be traded was made the day before he left. He also had asked to be sent elsewhere the third day of training camp this year and a week after he came to the Giants from Pittsburgh last year.
At the time of his exit, which came a couple of days after Tarkenton's return from his walkout, some people believed the eight year pro was upset that the Giants had placed him on waivers, a move that was disclosed by John Mazur, the Patriots' coach.
On the contrary, Shiner said, he was pleased to learn of the Giants' action because it set up his move.
Once they made a step in the direction of making a trade, he said, I felt now is the time to get out and force them to do it. If wouldn't have found out about the waivers, I would've stayed. I knew once I walked out they'd have to do something because you just don't walk out on somebody and get taken back too easily [unless your name is Fran Tarkenton].
If he had it to do over, Shiner said, he wouldn't even have reported to camp but would have stayed home with his unsigned contract.

8-18-1971

WASHINGTON, Aug. 17 (AP) Dick Shiner, backup quarter back who walked out of the New York Giants camp last weekend, said he made only one demand of Coach Alex Webster: Trade me.
I asked him to trade me, said Shiner, who started his pro career with the Washington Redskins in 1964 and subse quently played for Cleveland and Pittsburgh before New York.
He said he would think about it, said Shiner.
Before the Giants game against the Patriots, Shiner fig ured Webster had had enough time to think, so he left the club and returned to his home in Seabrook, Md., a Washington suburb.

(7) Giants set up a trade with Atlanta for Randy Johnson involving Shiner
(8) Eagles claim Shiner on waivers violating NFL gentlemens agreement
(9) Giants claim LB Tim Rossovich who the Eagles are trying to assign to injured list, also violating a NFL gentlemens agreement.

AJC (11-1971)

Who got the draft choice? That is the intriguing question about the Dick Shiner-Randy Johnson trade. You remember Johnson, don't you? He was the original Atlanta Falcon quarterback who came with the franchise way back there in 1966. For five years, he was the only starting quarterback the Falcons had.
Then came Bob Berry, a castoff from the Minnesota Vikings. Last year Berry established himself as the No. 1 quarterback and Johnson was shunted to the background as a relief pitcher. He did not care for this role and so informed Coach Norm Van Brocklin. Johnson really got uptight in draining camp this year and said he would start or leave. He was traded to the New York Giants for Shiner. Now, the rub: The Falcons lay they got Shiner and a fraft choice for Johnson.

Shiner Sunday will start against the team he didn't want to play for. On the other hand, Johnson, even in New York, remains No. 2 and it is unlikely he will get into the game against the team he didn't want to play for. In a brief appearance, he completed two of 11 passes for 20 yards. So far, you'd have to say the Falcons have had the upper hand in that trade, draft choice or no draft choice. The New York Giants say they got Johnson and a draft pick for Shiner. Somewhere in that maze of information someone is wrong. No doubt the whole thing will be cleared up at the college draft next January. Meanwhile, The Constitution has learned the Giants' side of the transaction. It seems that they released or waived Shiner with intentions of having the Falcons claim him, but the Philadelphia Eagles, who preceded the Birds on the selection list and were desperate for a quarterback, promptly messed up the whole deal by putting in their bid. They needed a quarterback and they needed Shiner.

Well, after that," says Giants spokesman Don Smith, "we promptly claimed Eagles linebacker Tim Rossovich, who was on injured reserve."
Eagles general manager Pete Retzlaff was furious. He' called and wanted to know "what the hell's going on?

For the uninitiated, it might be mentioned that NFL clubs usually respect each other's players.

The Giants advised him they would drop their claim on Rossovich if he did the same on Shiner. Since Rossovich is one of the outstanding young linebackers in the NFL, Retzlaff complied. "Because of this, a draft consideration was made," says Smith. So, who got the draft choice?

(10) Giants send two draft choices to Atlanta for Johnson.
(11) The Giants get the Eagles to rescind claim to Shiner, allows Shiner to go to Atlanta and the Giants end up surrendering one draft choice for Johnson instead of two.

Johnson would start the season ending loss to the Eagles in 1971.

With Tarkenton traded Johnson thought he would be the starter in 1972. However he dislocated shoulder in a exhibition game and Norm Snead took over and had something of a late career renaissance, becoming one of the highest rated passers in the league and making the Pro Bowl.

Johnson would be the next to walk out:

8-21-1973

WEST LONG BRANCH, N. J., Aug. 21 The New York Giants sweetened Randy Johnson's incentives as a quarterback today.
In what he described as a gentlemanly meeting with Coach Alex Webster and Wellington Mara, the club president, the 28 ;year old Johnson said the Giants had altered his contract and made the situation very attractive for me to stay both financially and for the future.
Johnson's disclosure of his 75 minute meeting finally defined the nature of his current uncertainty with the club, which had prompted rumors ranging from retirement to a possible trade.
Johnson said he had to make a decision about his future and his family, in the aftermath of Sunday's 45 ;30 victory over the Jets, where the Giants definitely seemed set with Norman Snead as the regular quarterback.
I didn't want to pull Tarkenton, Johnson said, referring to the much publicized 1971 preseason walkout by Fran Tarkenton, then the Giants quarterback. I didn't want to walk out on anybody.
Johnson, who began working fulitime in January as a vice president with Grolier Properties, a Florida real estate development company, also said that, contrary to earlier reports, he did not ask to be traded. I didn't want to put the Giants in a position where they would have to give up something, he said.
What the agreement does is to free Johnson to concentrate on football for the remainder of this year even if he does not win the No. 1 job. It does not answer the Giants long range plans at quarterback, since Johnson said he would review the situation at the end of this season.
Webster, however, walked one step further into the future today and said he wouldn't be surprised if the Giants made the playoffs this year.
I think we're getting up to Dallas and Washington, Webster said.
Webster's confidence has surfaced slowly since the Giants training camp opened. It has been bolstered by the club's unbeaten exhibition record, the expected return this week of three previously injured regulars (Bob Tucker, Larry Jacobson and Charlie Evans) and the positive mood among the players.
It was an attempt to preserve this feeling that prompted Webster to meet this morning with Johnson and Mara, the club president. Johnson has been competing with Norman Snead for the No. 1 quarterback spot but had had been unhappy with what he termed his uncertain status.
He wanted to know where he's going and what's going to happen, Webster said.
Basically, he's not in a backup status. He's six years younger than Snead. Quarterbacks last an awfully long time. Snead [who is 34 years. old] could be out coaching somewhere and Randy could be on his way to the Super Bowl.
Webster said he told Johnson about a similar situation with the Giants during his playing days, which involved Y. A. Tittle and Charlie Conerly.
Tittle came in about the third or fourth game and started, Webster said; referring to the Giants 1961 season. Charlie accepted the backup role, we all remember that. Then he came in and won two important ball games for us during the season against L. A. and the Eagles.
The Giants won the Eastern Division title that year and lost the N.F.L. title to Green Bay.
Webster said that Johnson understood that I want him and the team wants him. We've got something good going here and we need two quarterbacks of that caliber to win.
Webster ruled out any possibility of trading Johnson (There's no way I'm going to trade him).
Webster also said that the possibilities of trades had been reduced by the return of Tucker, the top tight end; Jacobson, a regular last season at defensive tackle, and Evans, a fullback, who will assist Vin Clements, the current No. 1. All are expected to play in Sunday's fourth exhibition against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Yankee Stadium.
Tucker, sidelined for the first three games with a fractured left thumb, had the cast removed today, replaced by a splint. Evans, now at 210 pounds, has lost almost 30 pounds since reporting to camp distraught over an injured leg. Jacobson played briefly in the Giants 45 30 victory over the Jets last Sunday.

Johnson would be given the starting job when Snead struggled in 1973. He would sign with Hawaii in the WFL. The Giants responded by giving him his release.

Hawaiians WFL

Aided by the signing of several NFL free agents, the Hawaiians continued to mature throughout the season. Many players who had signed future contracts with the team were being released by their NFL clubs and joined the team earlier than expected. Randy Johnson was released from the New York Giants camp and John Isenbarger joined the club after being released from his prospective contract, as did running back Vince Clements. Giddings also brought in defensive backs Willie Williams and Otto Brown (both from the New York Giants) as well also defensive back Chuck Detwiler (St.Louis Cardinals camp) and linebacker Dave Olerich (Chicago Bears).

Johnson rotated at QB with future Giants Head Coach Jim Fassell while in Hawaii.

Once the WFL folded, Johnson would return to the NFL to face the Giants as a member of the Redskins.

Pat Traina thinks we will carry 7-8 DL?!
HopePhil and Optimistic : 6/18/2019 1:36 pm : link
in the Jake Ceresna article. It may take that many for him to make the team but I expect 6, with only these 5 part of the rotation: Tomlinson, Hill, Lawrence, McIntosh and Pierre.

J. Jenkins, A. Jenkins, C. Slayton, Droogsma and/or Ceresna all seem to be on the bubble.

Do you think its worth keeping any of these bubble guys at the expense of an extra DB or LB/edge rusher?

Personally, I'd rather keep Antonio Hamilton (for specials), Chandler as the 4th Safety, or a developmental guy like Carlock or Tuaufa.

What do you think?

to have Haley on outside looking in at cornerback. It's a bit odd as he has owned reps as slot corner with the 1s...and we have quite a few rookies now that have broken in to get reps with the 1s. Lawrence and Baker are now listed as starters, and Slayton and Ximines have both taken reps with the first team, albeit in a limited fashion.

Mentioned it in another thread, but this has been the second time in a week that Duggan has pointed to Coleman as the leader for the number 3WR spot, indicating that he has taken most of the reps there over the other candidates(Latimer, Fowler, Slayton).
Re Coleman
BSIMatt : 6/18/2019 3:43 pm : link
Quote:

WR Corey Coleman: The Giants essentially replaced Odell Beckham Jr. with Golden Tate and made no other major changes to their receiving corps from a year ago. It appears that Coleman, who was the 15th pick by the Browns in the 2016 draft, will be given every opportunity to realize his potential with the Giants after he took the most reps as the first-team No. 3 receiver this spring. Coleman should benefit from a full offseason in the Giants system after spending time with four teams during a 10-week span a year ago.

Duggan on Haley:
Quote:
CB Grant Haley: Leaving Haley off my 53-man roster projection last week drew a strong reaction, which is understandable. He showed some promise last season as an undrafted rookie, playing 39 percent of the defensive snaps at slot cornerback. Haley remained with the first-team nickel defense throughout spring practices, but I cant shake the notion that hell be overtaken by rookie Julian Love this summer. Teams, even if subconsciously, tend to be biased toward their draft picks. And if the Giants were as high on Haley as many outsiders seem to be, why would they use a fourth-round pick on Love with the intention of playing him in the slot? Haley may ultimately hold onto the starting job, but the selection of Love hurt those odds.
