I'd make one small change....swap Hicks and DJ. Hicks is slumping now but historically has the higher OBP....and DJ would get lots of opportunities to hit with men in RISP in the slot behind Voit.
When you look at this lineup you can see why the Yanks didn't really need either Harper or Machado. And just think about trying to squeeze Andujar in there if he was healthy!

Yeah I actually thought about that. The better OBP hits higher and then the guy with the better average gets to hit with more runners on. Makes sense.

Montgomery's bullpen session today was shut down midway due to discomfort.
Ugh.
Really hope they make a move for a pitcher like Bumgarner/Scherzer or even Bauer/Stroman at the very least.
Bauer at the very least? Hes one of the top 10-15 pitchers in the game today. It would be a tremendous add.
Ive always liked Stromans makeup and profile, but I am leery of buying right now. Most metrics indicate that the results have been better than the stuff this season (i.e. luck has been in his favor). Not that I wouldnt want him, but the price/timing factor...

Bauer is certainly a tops front of the rotation guy, but top 10? In all of baseball? In the American league maybe...
He was elite last year, and seems well above average this year. And he's a clutch bastard. But his best finish in Cy Young was 6. He's not even the best pitcher on his own team. Unless, we're writing off Kluber because of 7 games...

I'd have to think that Frazier plus Andujar plus a non-blue/red chip
prospect gets you Bauer. Maybe I have Yankees-colored glasses on here, but Andujar proved he's an above-average major-league hitter across an entire season and Frazier sure looks like an average (at worst) major league hitter. But maybe I'm biased.
I guess I'm just a little nervous calling a guy top 10-15 who only has one elite year and a bunch of average/above average years. I trust your judgment more than mine though.

I tend to agree. I was thinking Frazier/Andujar/prospects (maybe Lasagna as another 'name') should be plenty (two potential all stars and some lotto tickets for a SP) to land nearly any starter. But I was curious about section's thoughts since he seems to think it'll take a bit more for Bauer.

I think thatd get it done pretty quickly. Bauer is a UFA whos let it be known hes not signing contracts for term and intends to go year to year. Cleveland is so budget constrained that I could actually see them declining to offer Bauer a QO out of fear that he actually signs it (mostly joking). Surely there would be some other bidders, but...
Astros - could and might outbid a Frazier/Andujar package.
Rays - maybe.
Minny - really nice farm, but running near the top of their budget already, and does Cleveland prefer not to help out a division rival?
Boston - cant compete w that package without making their pro roster worse.
Dodgers - maybe, but seem likely to focus on bullpen
Atlanta - prospects galore, but very budget-minded. Feels unlikely they give up big prospects for a rental.
A rumor about the Yanks trading Frazier/Andujar for Bauer. Don't know shit about baseball, but figured I'd pass it along.
It would probably take more to get Bauer.
Section, I'm curious what you think a package would look like that could land Bauer...
And then compare that with what we'd need to land Stroman...
Indians are not out of the race, so Bauer is going nowhere anytime soon.
If he was available I think you need at least a lower level pitcher added. Neither Andujar nor Frazier are MLB fielders at this point. I think Frazier certainly can be and Andujar may need to go to 1B or corner OF.
I also don't think Bauer fits in NYC if you see the shitstorm Frazier raised by not talking to the media, what would happen to his shtick. I like Bauer's stuff, but he doubtfully fits that locker room.
(IMHO)!
Judge says he's "100%" - will play two 9 inning games @ SWB and then he's back.
I don't think he'll actually be 100% at any point until next year, and it's player speak, but still... even Judge being a little less than 100% is a big addition.
especially with RISP, so you'd bat him 8th? Not now, I would have Hicks 7th or 8th until he starts to hit. He is pressing.
If DJLM is a RISP machine, then why would you bat him leadoff where he's guaranteed to come up with the bases empty on his first AB every night? And after that, hitting being the 8-9 hitters, who will likely have the lowest OBP's of the team? Wouldn't it make more sense to hit him after a bunch of guys with high OBP's?
there seem to be a lot more Ed Whitson or Sonny Gray bombs. I'd hate to trade Frank Robinson for Milt Pappas. I like our hitters named Andujar and Frazier more then a Bauer who will have us by the throat in another year. Not enough history with him
I think getting on base is also important for the leadoff guy - and DJ is as good as anyone on the team at doing that this year. I believe Voit is the only one with an OBP higher than DJ - Urshela is somewhere close. He might be a hair above.
I think once Hicks really looks like Hicks again, he'll move back into the leadoff spot and then DJ will move down into a better RBI spot where he'll get more PAs with RISP.

Yeah, I probably should have caveated it, but I think DJLM should stick as leadoff for now, but once Hicks get right, they should switch. That said, last two seasons (2017 and 2018), DJLM's OBP has been on par or better than Hicks. But I'd like the guy with the higher BA hitting with runners on.

Yeah, Beltran said that he was sore all year. Different people heal differently. I doubt the Yankees have gotten him back before he is ready. They are holding their own without him, so why not give him more time if he could use it.
I wouldn't mind Hicks leading off and then DJ second
That way you get your OBP guy on base first, and then a high average guy who can drive him in or move him over up next. And then the avalanche of power. But it probably makes sense to split up the OBP guys between the power guys.
If I had to bet what it'll look like:
DJ
Judge
Hicks
Sanchez
Voit
Stanton
Encarnacion
Didi
Torres

I think you'd lose your bet because I don't think there's any way Boone bats a 30 million a year MVP in the 6 hole. I can see him batting 5th for now but before long he'll be 3rd or 4th in the order. Probably 4th.
and replacing him with Happ and Paxson was great ....hell it's now double trouble....those two are snake bitten, hopefully they will heat up as the dogs get back and get them some runs to work with.
where we can trade Happ and several prospects for a reliable 3rd starter. I can't stand watching this guy.
For all the bitching, he's given up 2 runs. If this was CC we'd all be saying what a great start it was. And some of the hits were seeing eye, away from the shift...even the one hard hit double was an out with normal positioning of the CF.
you shouldn't be able to challenge tags on the bases. It killed base-stealing and if ump-error is part of the game, why force us to swallow it where they make the most mistakes?
I just got to the hotel and checked BBI before checking on the game and from the thread, it makes it seem like Happ shit the bed and left the game down several runs.

But it is actually 4-2 and the Yanks are winning!
I'm partly responsible. I didn't think Happ would last 5 the way it was going early on, but he hung in there. Still took him like 87 pitches to get through 5 though.
Deivi Garcia struck out 15 in 6 innings, and gave up 1 hit and 1 walk.

Gave up 7 hits - 6 thru 3. Some real cheappies and 5 of those on 2 strike counts. He wasn't particularly sharp, but good enough.
Like I said if it was CC, we'd all be happy.

CC isn't signed for two years at 17mm. This guy is the pits.

First time, let this go by. This time: no, we wouldn't all be happy if CC'd been pitching as badly as Happ was.

Bullshit. If CC put that up this game we'd all be happy. It is about as good as you are getting from CC.
You can curse all you want, but CC still throws with authority and where hitters don't get to it. Happ doesn't. Seven hits in four? No, no one would be happy -- except with the score. Not with the pitcher.

He moved the goal posts from this game to the whole season. Obviously, if CC was pitching to a 4.5 ERA and only going 5 innings that'd be a problem. Of course, CC's value is that despite going only 5, his ERA is under 4. Happ is a different kind of pitcher. He offers more length. So, it's an apples and oranges comparison in some ways.

CC never gets above 88/89. Throws with authority? He lives on the corners, throws junk up and down, in and out. He barely gets out of 5 innings and sometimes makes it into the 6th.
What Happ threw tonight was CC numbers.
better than what he has been. He has gotten better. But should be a lot better. Big drop off from Tanaka and Paxton to where Happ has been.
It goes back to what FMiC said - reading the thread it sounds like he got torched when he had about three hard hit balls and over half his hits were dribblers and off the label. He gave up no walks.
Maybin within the next week. No way they'll get rid of Gardner who is a lifer and starting to hit. He is still the better OF than Maybin. But damn it is close.

Gardner retires a Yankee. He has speed, defense and he hits left. That plays more important off the bench than Maybin.
3) Some very good players are starting back ( Didi, Hicks, Stanton, Judge).
4) Some hard working guys who want to be Yankees are playing big to be Yankees
5) The key is to analyze which is more like a 4th or 5th pitcher? The choices are our 4th or 5th pitcher?
Jumped on the thread late after enjoying most of this one, and this brought a laugh, well played sir.
Nice to see EE with his first bomb...and he could barely contain his smile at his first Yankee HR...and realizing what he can do hitting it to RF in this park.
If only the Yanks could get rid of Stanton and his ludicrous contract
There are many reasons everyone hates our fanbase. One of them is people who cry when great players aren't perfect or go through down spells.
The haters are incorrigible. We're in first place! We just won! We have five 30 home run guys in the middle of line up. Can we all just be a little bit happy?
I checked his stats and he's been playing in MLB since 2007(!) when he was only 20(!!) and he's only 32. I doubt this is one of those "tools guy finally puts things together" scenarios but maybe he can turn into a league-average or above-league-average player. Guy sure has put his time in.
I dunno...its a fun team for a fan to root for. Seems like a good team, good clubhouse, lots of contributors, a rebound season by the Kraken and Britton, some cool seasons by easy to root for guys and we get to see some under the radar pros show up ( Urshela, Maybin, Maple, DJ)

the best part of BBI for over 14 years are my fellow Yankee posters and threads.
For several of those years the Yankees were not fun to root for. Now they are. Just in time because some recent Giants years have been unwatchable football.
This recent Yankee surge have been the most likeable Yankee teams to root for. And I learned the game listening on the radio to the Mantle Maris HR race with my grandfather.
So CC or Happ? eh? We need 4th and 5th pitchers. All of them are frustrating for their teams. Two vets doing their best
Deivi Gracia K's 15 (!!!) through 6 innings, allowing 1 hit and 1 walk tonight. 19 years old in AA. He did let 4 guys put the ball in play in 6 innings though....so I suppose he needs a bit more work.

And you as well Bill...I agree with you that Yankee threads are amongst BBI's best. For the most part, very knowledgeable Yankee fans here, well read/informed and with a long history following the team.
My earliest memory of watching baseball is seeing my Dad go nuts watching the Dodgers come back to win the 81 Series. Fernandomania...blech.
Compared the 80s and the height of George's madness, this is a most likable team and org to root for and follow. Sure, we all know we may still be a #1 starter short of beating the Astros (or Sox if they hit their stride) in the playoffs, but the future is bright for the next decade at least.
As to the debate about Happ and CC...the real issue is we expected Sevy to give us a very strong top 3 with Tanaka and Paxton...Happ and CC plus starter depth should be a competitive rotation.
Sevy's lingering injury is the biggest blow IMO, not the fact Happ is just OK and CC's almost done.
Will be an interesting trade deadline, that's for sure
last night...I thought I heard a smattering after the AB in the 8th.
This is pretty pathetic. Stanton and Judge will both be "off" for several games because of the layoff. It doesn't come back instantly. Stanton Booed already - ( New Window )
Nice to see Eddy get his first Parrot Walk in already.
I didn't realize that we don't have options on Hale - I thought we'd be able to run a shuttle with he and Cortes in order to keep Maybin up.
I'd honestly still just DFA Cessa. If someone claims him, whatever.
There's no guarantee everyone will stay healthy in the OF - Stanton or Judge could aggravate something, Hicks' back could flare back up... who knows.
It's not as conventional to keep the 4th bench guy, but I'd still do it here for Maybin because you can use him late in games on the bases or in the field.
I think the Yanks will still keep Maybin - they'll likely just option Cortes and go from there. Nestor has actually been pretty valuable for us - he's soaked up innings in games where we've really needed someone to do so, and he's pitched pretty darn well in the process. He'll be back. But, there's no chance Maybin gets through if they go the DFA route there and they know that - so, I don't think they'll expose him.
Not a bad one for Happ last night. I'll gladly take that.
The Stanton booing is ludicrous - but there are morons in every fan base. It's, unfortunately, not a surprise at all.
DJLM
Judge
Giancarlo
Gary
Encarnacion
Voit
Hicks
Didi
Gleyber
This is of course the all-hit, less defense lineup. But with those 9 guys, hard to go wrong making a lineup.
When you look at this lineup you can see why the Yanks didn't really need either Harper or Machado. And just think about trying to squeeze Andujar in there if he was healthy!

I don't think he'll actually be 100% at any point until next year, and it's player speak, but still... even Judge being a little less than 100% is a big addition.
Can't wait.
Yeah, Beltran said that he was sore all year. Different people heal differently. I doubt the Yankees have gotten him back before he is ready. They are holding their own without him, so why not give him more time if he could use it.

Ancient Chineses sayin' - shit happens.
THE OPENER, breh.
(I'm so fucking tired of looking at him)
I didn't think he miss it at all. Just didn't elevate it. Bet it was over 100mph. I thought it was gone off the bat.
.
Strike three was a strike - was well over the plate. Strike two was a ball. - overhead camera tells all.
Then go away
He did.
For all the bitching, he's given up 2 runs. If this was CC we'd all be saying what a great start it was. And some of the hits were seeing eye, away from the shift...even the one hard hit double was an out with normal positioning of the CF.
So does Clint. Maybin is just seasoned enough to know how to show it.
...just sayin.
Sanchez with another little poke through the shift. Love that MFing shit.
4-2
Just keeping throwing sliders more and more off the plate...
But it is actually 4-2 and the Yanks are winning!

I'm partly responsible. I didn't think Happ would last 5 the way it was going early on, but he hung in there. Still took him like 87 pitches to get through 5 though.
Just kidding.
But it is actually 4-2 and the Yanks are winning!
Gave up 7 hits - 6 thru 3. Some real cheappies and 5 of those on 2 strike counts. He wasn't particularly sharp, but good enough.
Like I said if it was CC, we'd all be happy.

I just got to the hotel and checked BBI before checking on the game and from the thread, it makes it seem like Happ shit the bed and left the game down several runs.

CC isn't signed for two years at 17mm. This guy is the pits.

Kindly stop. You are getting to be tortuous...

As he saves the HR streak again.

Yankees wont because of what Gardner is being paid but Maybin is a better player currently
Meanwhile, Minnesota pushes one across in the 8th...
Win! Twins!

CC never gets above 88/89. Throws with authority? He lives on the corners, throws junk up and down, in and out. He barely gets out of 5 innings and sometimes makes it into the 6th.
What Happ threw tonight was CC numbers.
To be fair, I can't disagree with this.

I misread your post (missed the 'd=had). Still though, CC is maxing out at 90 pitches some nights. It's not a great comparison.

I mean about CC.
2nd deck bomb.
1) we are beating the second place team
2) Boston is losing
3) Some very good players are starting back ( Didi, Hicks, Stanton, Judge).
4) Some hard working guys who want to be Yankees are playing big to be Yankees
5) The key is to analyze which is more like a 4th or 5th pitcher? The choices are our 4th or 5th pitcher?
It goes back to what FMiC said - reading the thread it sounds like he got torched when he had about three hard hit balls and over half his hits were dribblers and off the label. He gave up no walks.
Superb play!
6-3
Gardner retires a Yankee. He has speed, defense and he hits left. That plays more important off the bench than Maybin.

Jumped on the thread late after enjoying most of this one, and this brought a laugh, well played sir.
Nice to see EE with his first bomb...and he could barely contain his smile at his first Yankee HR...and realizing what he can do hitting it to RF in this park.
Well done.
Well done.
That was the sharpest hes looked in a while. Not only throwing his old heat, but with command. Good sign.
I share the crowds Maybin love...wish we could go with 12 pitchers to keep him and Gardy.
The haters are incorrigible. We're in first place! We just won! We have five 30 home run guys in the middle of line up. Can we all just be a little bit happy?
And great win Jints! You're rolling again!
Hope you are well mfsd.

Silent assassin. Touche...I can laugh at that.
Cause when Judge comes back there is no real role for him.
There are fans who just are miserable. They take out the frustrations in their own lives and shortcomings onto players.
Hope you are well mfsd.

This is pretty pathetic. Stanton and Judge will both be "off" for several games because of the layoff. It doesn't come back instantly.
Stanton Booed already - ( New Window )
Let's get another W today.
Interestingly enough, it was former Yankee farmhand Zach Littell who got the win.
